MONEY will not be an issue when it comes to the potential signing of former Brentford defender Alfie Mawson.

Swindon Town’s bid to sign the 21-year-old was reported yesterday, with a number of clubs, including Barnsley, Bradford City and Millwall, also known to have made offers.

Mawson comes highly rated. He came third in the League Two player of the year awards, as well as being named player of the season by the fans at Wycombe Wanderers – the club where last season he played a big part in the side defeated in the play-off final.

Despite those interested parties all being amongst the larger in League One, the Advertiser understands at this stage in his career that Mawson is more focused on the best place for his development rather than seeking a large pay packet.

The defender’s role in the first team was discussed when the player met with the club on Monday, which would favour Town ahead of the interest in Mawson from the Championship. With playing time set to be a big factor in the decision making process for the player.

Though Town’s budget is one of the smallest in the league, and will have come down further following the departures of Wes Foderingham and Andy Williams, it will not be a deciding factor in Mawson’s destination.

However Town would have to pay a fee, set by tribunal, for his services to Brentford as he is under the age of 23 and leaving a club where he has been offered a cursory new deal.
