TOWN chairman Lee Power has accused the local media of ‘creating stories’ in regard to reports linking Mark Cooper with Sheffield Wednesday.

The speculation over Cooper’s future at the County Ground simmered down last week as Wednesday opted to install Carlos Carvalhal as head coach, with reports suggesting the Town boss turned down the role.

Power has now said he was never approached by the Owls about taking Cooper to Hillsborough and accused the local media of making up the stories.

It should be noted that none of the media outlets reporting on the Cooper to Wednesday story claimed an official approach for the Town boss had been made by the Owls. The focus of the reports centred on discussions between Cooper, his representatives and Wednesday.

However Power saw to fit to vent his frustrations at the reports and claimed he did not offer comment at the time because he is not in the business of selling newspapers.

“You have to appreciate I don’t live in this country, but it’s quite frustrating when I read certain things,” Power told BBC Wiltshire.

“Certain media outlets that need to sell papers and do certain things in summer, that’s their business, they try and create stories and say certain things and want people to respond.

“I never had an official approach from Sheffield Wednesday, I never heard from them at all.

“When no one makes an approach and newspapers come up with these stories, I don’t make any money and nor does the football club out of selling papers and that’s why there’s no reason for us to respond really.

“If there was an approach and Mark was going to go and speak to them then I’d let the fans know, of course I would. When nothing’s happened I don’t see the point in it really.”
