SAM Parkin has thrown his weight behind the re-launching of the Red Army Fund.

The goal-getting Town hero, 34, has been working closely with the Trust and played an active role in their school visits last season alongside loan star Harry Toffolo.

Parkin, who is building a career in broadcasting working with BBC Wiltshire and Chelsea TV, provided the voiceover on the Trust’s promotional launch video.

Town are a club close to his heart and he sees the Trust’s latest campaign as a great way to build the support base and for fans to be actively involved in taking them to the next level.

“I’m really impressed with what the Trust are doing and I was more than happy to lend a hand for this latest initiative,” said Parkin.

“One of the most important things for me is getting the next generation of supporters through the gates and filling up the stadium. Young people getting involved in football is something I’m really passionate about and also following their local club.

“That’s something I did as a child and it’s something that used to frustrate me when people didn’t. Swindon’s a fantastically-supported club, but there’s still more to be done in that area.

“My last club was Exeter, which is completely fan-run and I think what Steve (Mytton) and the Trust are trying to do, giving fans a chance have a minor say in how their club’s run can only be beneficial.”

May 7, 2015 marked 10 years since Parkin played his last Town game and he remembers the same issues with the County Ground back then.

“Not having a roof on the Stratton Bank and improving facilities for disabled supporters were talked about when I was playing for Swindon,” he added.

“For Swindon to move on to the next tier, to be a Championship club and be further respected, it would be great to improve the ground.

“The Trust’s initiative to move towards that, amongst other things, is fantastic.”
