SWINDON Town captain Nathan Thompson has called on his teammates to learn from tonight’s last minute error which cost them all three points against Port Vale.

Thompson was left perplexed by referee Brendan Malone’s decision to award the visitors a last gasp penalty when Jordan Turbull handled in the box from a corner, with full-back Brandon Ormonde-Ottewill lying injured on the ground.

However, he has said that his young teammate must learn from what happened and not fixate on the referee’s decision.

“Apparently he (Jordan Williams) has handled it. I think he has gone to catch it, or punch it back to the corner taker, because he has assumed that the corner wasn’t going to take place,” Thompson told the local media.

“I didn’t even see it.

“I went to check Boo (Ormonde-Ottewill) was alright and to make sure he wasn’t leaving the pitch, because I saw he was down and we couldn’t afford to be a man down at such a key time.

“The next thing I know the referee has given a penalty. I can’t get my head around it.

“If the ball was in play and he goes down, because it wasn’t a head injury, you continue.

“But the fact the ball had gone out of play; it is a natural reaction if someone has gone down in pain.

“At the end of the day we learn from the mistakes.

“It is a very strange one, but we’ll allow the referee to make a comment on that one and take it from there.”

Despite only coming away from the County Ground with a point, Thompson feels the side can take a lot of positives from one of their most rounded displays of the season.

“I think it was the most pleasing performance of the season so far,” added Thompson.

“If you look back at Bradford, although the second half was better, I still don’t think (the style) was us.

“Whereas (against Vale) it much better. It was more of what we were used to last season.

“We were seeing patterns of play and different movements from certain players that showed a bit of our identity.

“I think the last couple of games the other teams have dictated to us. Whereas we had Port Vale on the back foot from the first whistle.

“We will take a lot of positives from that.”

The Adveritser were not permitted to attend Thompson's post-match press conference.

The article was ammended after viewing video which revealed it was Jordan Williams, not Jordan Turnbull who had handled for the penalty.
