LOUIS Thompson is slowly starting to regain his legs as a first team regular.

The Swindon academy product, who moved to Norwich at the end of last season, had only been playing under 21s football with the Carrow Road outfit before he rejoined Town earlier this month. Thompson admitted that a lack of game time had impacted on his match fitness, but he is feeling his way back into it.

The 20-year-old was not given a squad number by Canaries boss Alex Neil, who was not in charge when the purchase of Thompson was agreed. The midfielder’s fortunes contrast starkly with that of Town’s other loanee from Norwich last season, Harry Toffolo.

The England Under 20 international made his debut for Norwich in the League Cup and signed a new two-year contract recently, while Thompson has taken a road via Swindon to earn a look in at the Premier League club.

For fans at the County Ground they will just be glad to see one of their young stars return to the place where he made his name, even if it is only temporary. For Thompson, who is a doubt for tonight’s game at Doncaster with a dead leg, he is starting to enjoy his football again and does not think it will be long before he returns to his best form.

“I’ve had a bit of a slow to start if I’m honest with you,” Thompson told the local media.

“In the last couple of games I felt a little bit rusty. It’s completely different to an under 21s scenario. You play games once a week, if not twice a week (at Swindon). Whereas (in under 21s) it’s every two weeks, three weeks.

“I’m slowly starting to fit back into (first team football). I’m enjoying it again.

“Every game I feel like I’m getting a little bit more confident with it. Long may that continue.”

Before rejoining Town, Thompson got his first call-up for the Wales Under 21s since 2013 and played against Luxembourg in a 3-1 win. He had previously chosen to focus on his club career, but now he feels at a stage where he can balance both.

“The senior (Wales) squad is flying at the moment and the under 21s are doing very well as well,” added Thompson.

“(International football) is important to me. I said in the past that I had to focus on my club. I did that and established myself.

“Now international is just as important. My foremost concern is Tuesday night and what we do there. As long as I’m performing and the team perform I’ll be a happy bunny.”
