JONATHAN Obika wants to pick up where he left off, having got over his spell on the sidelines.

The 25-year-old hitman started the season in good goalscoring form. He had found the net in each of the opening two games before going down with an ankle injury at Gigg Lane.

He returned from the bench as Town chased an equaliser at home to Burton, but needed an injection during the following week and sat out the defeat to Colchester.

Having enjoyed a great start to his second spell at the County Ground last season, Obika only scored three times after the turn of the year - one of those was a last-minute winner at Doncaster.

They must be sick of the sight of the former Tottenham man at the Keepmoat as he scored another late goal there on Tuesday to rescue a point. His 90th-minute header took his goal ratio to better than one-in-two for the season.

Having immediately rediscovered his goalcoring touch, Obika wants more.

“Now I’m back from injury, I just want to push on,” he told the local media.

“I’ll be working hard from Thursday onwards (to build match sharpness) and hopefully Blackpool on Saturday, I can show some more.

“Whenever I come on the pitch, I want to create or score so to get a goal on my first game back was injury is good.”

Part of the reason Obika could not maintain his early-season form last season was a lengthy injury lay-off that allowed Andy Williams to get a run in the starting XI and get on his own hot streak.

With the arrivals of Wes Thomas and Nicky Ajose whilst Obika was on the sidelines, he must have feared the same would happen again. So the striker was relieved to get back on the pitch in Tuesday night.

“I couldn’t play on Saturday because I needed 48 hours for (the injection) to settle down,” he added.

“Monday was my first training session back and it’s just good to be on the pitch again.

“It’s the first time I’ve had a full pre-season (at Swindon) and I felt good. Now it’s time to build up and get back into it.

“For me, it’s about getting sharper and more relentless. Closing down is a big part of my game now, getting back into it and loving my job.”
