OXFORD United manager Michael Appleton did not see Jordan Turnbull’s sending off as the turning point in a game they went on to win 2-0 to progress in the Football League Trophy.

The Us boss watched his team out-play Swindon after the Town defender saw red just after the half-hour mark for, what appeared to be, a kick out at Oxford captain Jake Wright.

The sending off gave the hosts the impetus and Kemar Roofe netted either side of half-time to send Town crashing out of the cup.

When asked if he had seen the sending off incident from the touchline Michael Appleton said: “I have not seen anything.”

However, despite having the man advantage Appleton thought that the first goal was always going to be the telling point.

“It was a good game up until that (sending off) anyway,” he told the Advertiser.

“I thought the first goal was going to be important, even more so than the sending off.

“Swindon have been on a bit of a bad run and if we got the first goal could we get their heads down with the fans behind us.

“It certainly helped us, there is no doubt about that, but we have still got to go and play well against 10 men.

“We have played against 10 men four times now this year and that is the best we have done, probably against the best team we have played.

“The three other teams, with the greatest respect, have been nowhere near as good as Swindon and we turned it on when we had to.”
