SWINDON Town chief Martin Ling concedes a two-week break without a game is the last thing he wants right now.

Town made it back-to-back victories – and three in four League One games since Ling was appointed as Mark Cooper’s successor at the start of November – with a ruthless display in a 4-0 success at Chesterfield on Saturday.

However, Ling’s first game in charge saw the Robins crash out of the FA Cup against Rochdale, meaning they are not in action in the second round this weekend.

The Town boss is desperate to try and keep this upturn in momentum going but he will now have to wait until December 12 to try to make it three wins in a row when Rochdale travel to the County Ground.

“It’s a pity we have got that break really now because on the back of two wins in quick succession we’d like to play tomorrow,” said Ling.

“It’s two weeks off and we will use that time wisely to keep putting what Luke (Williams) and Ross (Embleton) are putting into them on the training ground (into practice). They take big credit for Saturday’s performance as well.”

Saturday’s game was a stark contrast to what Ling witnessed seven days previously as Town were thumped 5-1 at Fleetwood.

Although the result does not constitute all of Swindon’s early-season problems having been resolved, Ling believes the value of a buoyant atmosphere in the camp should not be underestimated.

“It’s not very often you sit on the bench and are relaxed but Saturday was one of those days, especially towards the end,” said Ling.

“Like I said after the defeat at Fleetwood, the 5-1 was only three points lost, and the 4-0 win is only three points gained. I’ve been here for three league games now and got nine points, so the confidence that gives should help us pushing forwards.”
