BARNSLEY manager Lee Johnson praised the work off the field for their last gasp success at the County Ground this afternoon.

Sam Winnall popped up with less than three minutes left on the clock to give the Tykes a 1-0 win as they restricted Swindon Town.

Johnson was keen for his side to be compact against a Town side who like to pass the ball and get in between the lines of the opposition and the 34-year-old was confident that his side would always create the chance to snatch a win.

“When you come to Swindon you have got to set up with a plan and you have got to makes sure they can’t break lines and get in between you and they rarely did,” he said.

“At half time we came in and I think we had had 10 shots to their one and really should have taken a couple of those.

“In the second half we did get pegged back a little bit in the last 15 or 20 minutes but we looked like we could break on them and score.

“I am delighted for the lads because they put in a good shift and it is their third really tough game in a week, but their organisation was that good we earned the opportunity for Sam to score the winner.

“Today was always going to be a completely different game (to the one against Bradford) and I thought the lads were excellent.

“Overall I was a happy gaffer at the end.”

Barnsley defended resolutely throughout the 90 minutes and constrained Swindon to only a handful of chances and Alfie Mawson, a summer target for Town, came in for individual praise.

“We have said before how young the group is and that now becomes exciting,” added Johnson.

“Now they are not making individual errors and teams are not getting through us because we have done so much of the organisational work that all of a sudden we are on the front foot and we are always dangerous enough to score goals, as you have seen today.

“Alfie is definitely going to be a top player and he is starting to iron out those little things he needed to work on to become the player he could certainly be.”
