HIS SWINDON Town squad may be lacking in grey hairs but manager Luke Williams thinks that his inexperienced squad’s character is deserving of significant praise.

On Saturday, Town were handed the unenviable task of travelling to Gillingham and attempting to put a lid on League One’s most potent attack but by the evening, the sceptics had been left thoroughly shocked as Williams’ charges travelled back to the County Ground having secured a fine point at Priestfield.

A spirited defensive performance, which saw the high-flying Gills held to a goalless stalemate, had seen Swindon pass an almighty test with flying colours.

Town did not partake in any considerable incoming transfer activity during the January transfer window, barring the loan signings of Louis Thompson and Michael Doughty, but Williams says that he has a tight-knit group at his disposal, who are all singing from the same hymn sheet.

“I would much rather have quality than quantity and by that, I mean people that are absolutely, totally committed,” the Swindon chief told BBC Wiltshire.

“People that can support the squad, whether they’re starting every week or whether they’re on the bench coming on – a group that work in harmony every day and work hard, and drive each other on without having cliques.

“That’s the idea; that we have a small group that are all driven, motivated and really, really desperate to play for Swindon Town.”

One sour note to come out of Town’s successful trip to Kent was the apparent knee injury picked up by midfielder Yaser Kasim, who limped off and had to be replaced with seven minutes of normal time remaining.

Opting against any quick post-match assessments, Williams added: “It’s always difficult to assess this quickly but we’re hoping that it’s nothing long-term.

“Certainly, anything around the knee is always worrying, so we’ll have to wait 48 hours for that to settle down so that the physio and the medical staff can better assess the extent of it.

“A bang on the knee or maybe an awkward fall; I don’t think we’ve quite got to the bottom of it yet.”

Louis Thompson, who rejoined his boyhood club on loan from Norwich City last week, is expected to return to training this week.
