CRESTFALLEN Swindon Town boss Luke Williams apologised to supporters after his team’s Bank Holiday battering at Scunthorpe United.

Two days after being dispatched 4-1 by promotion-chasing Wigan Athletic at the County Ground, Town were condemned to their heaviest defeat since 2006 – a 7-1 loss at Nottingham Forest – as they were embarrassed in Lincolnshire, shipping six goals without reply.

Williams, who remorsefully gestured to the travelling Swindon supporters at Glanford Park following the final whistle, says that he was ‘shocked’ by his troops’ dismal display and was left in little doubt that he and his Town charges had let their supporters down.

“(I apologised) because I’m the first person that needs to be held accountable for this performance, for sure,” the County Ground chief told the local media post-match.

“I apologise to the fans that came to watch us and support us. At the bare minimum, they expect to see total commitment from the players.

“I’m shocked at some of the performances – to see some lacklustre performances – and also, what appeared to be some people downing tools at one point in the game and not really looking like they wanted to push themselves.

“I think it’s totally unacceptable and what you’re doing is you’re showing everyone that when things get tough, you’re not the type of character that’s able to dig in deep.

“I don’t fully understand the reason for the incredibly poor performance.

“I know we’re missing some important players but I don’t think there’s any reason why we should perform that badly.

“I can only imagine it’s a lack of concentration and peoples’ minds have wandered because they feel like there’s nothing to play for, and that’s not acceptable.

“People underperforming is one thing but people not concentrating on the game and not being involved in every minute is not acceptable.”

After letting in 10 goals in the space of three days, Town shipped more goals in their chastening defeats to Wigan and Scunthorpe than they had done in their previous 10 matches combined.
