LUKE Williams reckons the real Swindon Town were on show tonight as they secured an impressive draw away at promotion-chasing Walsall.

With the Saddlers needing a win to keep up the pressure on the automatic promotion places in League One and Town travelling to the Midlands without a win in eight games, there seemed only one winner at the Bescot Stadium.

However, Swindon produced their best performance for some time and were more than a match for their hosts.

First-choice strikeforce Jonathan Obika and Nicky Ajose continued their injury comebacks, while midfielder Yaser Kasim made a first start in more than two months after knee surgery, and Williams believes that proved the difference for Town.

“What we saw was probably the strongest group of players at the football club all on the pitch at the same time,” Williams told the media.

“We saw instead of having the strikers not match fit, probably closer to that, and Yaser Kasim closer to match fit, and I thought the performance was very good.

“It was a case of us having the most powerful, experienced athletes that we’ve got to choose from and we have not had all of those in recent weeks.

“We have got them all back and they are a group of players that are in very good physical fitness and what you saw today was the majority of them match fit and motivated and ready to work hard for each other.”

Michael Doughty gave Town the lead after an hour but it lasted just over 10 minutes as substitute Kieron Morris levelled the scores for the Saddlers.

Swindon had further chances to snatch the win but could not fashion out that one telling chance. Had they done so, Williams believes his side would have deserved it.

“I think when you go in front in a game, you have won it, and then it’s just a case of whether or not you can stay in front,” added Williams.

“I felt we warranted all three points but I have got to say I really do respect this team (Walsall) a lot and I really enjoyed watching them play almost as much as I enjoyed watching us play.

“I expect us to be good with the ball but today what was very pleasing was that we were able to press a very comfortable team.

“They are very good with the ball and we pressed them and harassed them.

“There were moments when we were together and had to weather storms and that was probably the most pleasing thing from my point of view.”
