SWINDON Town chief Luke Williams thought that his Swindon Town side put on a performance to purr over as they overcame Chesterfield this afternoon.

The Spireites, led by former Town manager Danny Wilson, proved a tough nut to crack at the County Ground but, particularly in a dominant second period, the hosts swarmed forward time and again in search of a winner and midfielder Yaser Kasim eventually got the breakthrough as he curled home the only goal of the game with 13 minutes to go.

A 1-0 triumph finally got Swindon back to winning ways after a nine-match winless run and ensured that relegation from League One was rendered a mathematical impossibility with two games to go.

As well as enjoying the lion’s share of the ball, the home side peppered the Chesterfield goal throughout and head coach Williams said that those two elements of Town’s display left him with a smile on his face.

When asked about the style shown by his team during their victory, Williams told the local media: “I personally think it’s very important and I’m sure the players will agree (that) to have 60 per cent of the ball and 20 attempts on goal; I think it’s an enjoyable way to play football.

“My personal preference, to watch football, is to watch a team have 20 attempts on goal in a game and have all the ball, so I think, from my point of view and players’, we feel like it’s a good style to adopt.

“It’s a relief and I think also, it’s pleasing; the manner (in which) we’ve played the last two games in particular.

“It’s as simple has having the best players all together and I think we’re much closer to where we were when we were winning games consistently.”

Williams was also delighted to see Swindon find a way past a dogged Chesterfield, who threw everything into making themselves hard to break down.

He added: “Sometimes it can give you the illusion that we’re playing slowly and that there’s nobody in front of us but the truth is, there is.

“There’s a team of athletes in front that are shutting spaces down and are trying to lure us into making a loose pass so that they can counter-attack and use the space in our half of the pitch.

“But I think, for the most part, the boys managed that very well by resisting the temptation to play forward too early or play a pass that’s not really on.

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the last two games.

“I felt like the club was represented very well with the style of play and the commitment of the players – I think that’s a good reflection.”
