LUKE Williams believes it was crucial that Swindon Town signed off for the summer on positive note after they brought the curtain down on their League One campaign with a 3-0 success at home to Shrewsbury Town today.

After what has overall been a season of struggle, Williams hopes that this performance will allow the Town squad to head off on their holidays confident that surer footing is ahead.

Although neither side had anything to play for, Town were a class above throughout at the County Ground and top-scorer Nicky Ajose stuck either side of half-time, while teenager Jordan Young rounded things off with his first senior goal.

Young goalkeeper Will Henry impressed again between the sticks, while there were further encouraging signs for Williams’ youthful squad to build on.

“I think it’s important that we still try to learn week in, week out, and try to perform to the best we can,” Williams told the local media.

“We know some of the players will be with us next season and it’s important we finish strong and with a real good performance to give them the motivation over the summer that they can come back and try to repeat this level of performance.

“It’s certainly important for the boys who have been on the pitch for the first time, or someone like Will Henry or Jordan Young, to get that experience in a strong team.”

Williams believed this was much more like the type of performance that Town are capable of when they have all their best players available.

Swindon never looked troubled against the Shrews and it was a relatively comfortably afternoon for the defence – although that did not prevent nerves creeping in when the score was still goalless as half-time approached.

“(That level of control) is something we have seen in some games and then we’ve been really overpowered in some other games and not been able to really dominate and leave our mark on a game,” added Williams.

“Sometimes, without the strongest personnel on the pitch, it has been difficult, and other times, we probably found it difficult playing against strong sides, who have got the better of us, but certainly, that (type of performance) is what we are aiming for.

“I did worry and you are never going to go through 90 minutes of football without any sort of response from your opponents.

“It’s about how quickly you can weather that and get back onto the control and dominate the game again.”
