SHREWSBURY Town manager Micky Mellon surmised that his side were simply not good enough as they surrendered to Swindon Town on the final day of the season.

The Shrews, who finished 20th in the League One table following their 3-0 loss at the County Ground, looked a side already on the beach, having secured their safety in the division on April 30.

Despite surviving following their promotion from League Two last term, Mellon’s men have felt the squeeze all season and whilst pleased that he can finally exhale with relief, the Shrewsbury chief hopes that his troops will learn a thing or two from their opposite numbers today.

“It’s probably been the story of the whole season; we obviously know that throughout the games, as a team, we haven’t defended well enough,” said Mellon.

“We haven’t been good enough today. That’s just the honest opinion.

“We gave away crazy goals but that’s just the story of the season.

“It was a bit of slack marking (in the build-up to Nicky Ajose’s penalty) to allow the ball to go over the top and then we sort of deal with it but then (there was) a rash attempt to clear the ball (by Zak Whitbread) and all of a sudden, it’s half-time and we’re a goal down.

“It’s not just been today – let’s been honest; it’s been the whole season.

“It’s been tough. Every week’s been tough. We sort of knew that.

“We’re at a level now where we know that (League One is) difficult.

“You only have to look today at a team that’s ended up mid-table to see where the measurements are that we, as a football club, have to try and get to.

“Not enough of our players have measured up today or indeed, over the course of the season, so that would have to improve.

“But we know that. We haven’t learned anything today that we never already knew, so it’s just a relief that it’s over.”

Mellon was also dismayed that his side disappointed the 502-strong band of travelling Shrewsbury supporters.

He added: “They were fantastic. They have been all season and we’d definitely have liked to have represented them better again today.

“They were superb and deserve better than what they were given today.”
