JONATHAN Obika has turned down the offer of a new contract at Swindon Town, chairman Lee Power has revealed.

Yesterday the club activated the one-year option on the striker’s current deal to keep him at the County Ground next season.

However, speaking on BBC Wiltshire yesterday, Power stated that Obika has rejected an extended offer from the club, understood to be a new two-year contract.

“That’s the first season where Jon has had a long run of games and I think everyone would agree that he looks a different player, he looks strong, he looks fit,” said Power.

“The problem is Jon is in his last year. We’ve asked Jon to sign a new deal and Jon doesn’t want to, which is his prerogative, not because he doesn’t like the club, but everyone has to realise these are humans, they have got families.

“He realises if he goes and has a good year next year, he walks away for nothing and goes and quadruples or trebles his money.”

Obika signed for Town from Premier League side Tottenham on transfer deadline day in summer 2014 and has made 71 appearances for the club, scoring 22 goals.

The 25-year-old was behind Andy Williams and Michael Smith in the pecking order during 2014-15 but formed a fruitful partnership with Nicky Ajose up top last season.
