RELEGATED Colchester United have rejected a bid of £150,000 from Charlton Athletic for midfielder George Moncur, who has also been the subject of interest from Swindon Town, according to reports.

The U's are thought to be ready to let Moncur - the son of former Town favourite John Moncur - leave following their relegation from League One at the end of the season, but want around £500,000 for the player.

Sky Sports reported that a bid from Charlton, who will be alongside Town in League One next season, for the Swindon-born player had been rebuffed, with Moncur also having held initial discussions with play-off hopefuls Barnsley.

Peterborough, who today appointed Grant McCann as their new manager, are also thought to be in the frame for the 22 year old, as are Milton Keynes Dons.

Moncur scored 14 times in 51 matches during the 2015-16 season, taking his tally for the U's to 23 in 97 appearances since joining initially on loan from West Ham in August 2014.

Town chairman Lee Power has previously spoken for his admiration for Moncur and did so again in the BBC phone-in last week.

He said: “We have been talking to a number of players, everyone knows that we like George.

"He’s a Colchester player, there’s a fee involved, we’d have to negotiate first and there’s a number of teams in for George as well, it’s not a straightforward one.

"He is on the Christmas list."
