SWINDON Town midfielder Yaser Kasim looks set to miss out on Iraq’s squad for the Rio Olympics, reports suggest.

The 25-year-old was likely to be one of Iraq’s three over-age players heading to Brazil, with the tournament less than a month away.

However, it appears Kasim - who was permitted to leave the team’s training camp in Munich last week for three days to sort out his future at Swindon Town, with speculation rife over a move away from the County Ground - will be left out due to a disciplinary issue from reports in his home country.

Kasim, who has a chequered past with the national side having briefly retired from international football last year, is reported to have not returned to camp following his designated time away and was unresponsive to calls from team manager Karim Farhan.

As a result, Farhan looks set to omit Kasim from the 18-man squad for “the lack of respect” shown by the player, with questions also arising over the midfielder’s fitness ahead of the tournament.

Kasim, who has been the subject of much transfer speculation since his performance in the Asia Cup in January last year, was involved in three of Iraq’s four warm-up games during their recent camp in Europe.

Having qualified for the 2016 Olympics after finishing third in January’s AFC U23 Championship, the Iraqis are in Group A, with hosts Brazil, South Africa and Denmark keeping them company.

They will begin their campaign against the Danes on August 4 at the Estádio Nacional Mané Garrincha.

If Kasim is left out of the squad, he will be available to play in Town’s opening game of the League One season on Saturday, August 6 as they play host to Coventry City.
