SWINDON Town manager Luke Williams thinks his side have returned to pre-season in good condition following Saturday’s 6-0 defeat of Swindon Supermarine.

A first-half brace from Jermaine Hylton put the visitors to the Webb’s Wood Stadium in control on their first outing of the summer.

Second half goals from Bradley Barry, Brandon Ormonde-Ottewill, Jonathan Obika and Ellis Iandolo secured the straight-forward victory for the League One outfit.

Williams used the opportunity to give 45 minutes to new signings John Goddard and Conor Thomas, while triallists Roland Huth, Jack Powell and Lewis Kinsella were also given a half to impress.

Williams was pleased with the start to pre-season, with skipper Nathan Thompson, who won the first-half penalty, leading by example.

“I think so many of the boys in good physical shape this early on was pleasing and the manner in which the players tried to go about their business,” he said.

“They tried to play with control and to take the game seriously as a contest which was pleasing. Everybody equipped themselves well today, it is hard to criticise any of the players.

“It was nice to see Conor (Thomas) officially as a Swindon player. He looked comfortable, he changed positions quite a bit and showed he can play in a deep midfield position and an advanced midfield position.

“I think the performance of Nathan (Thompson) as captain as a leader shows he has those qualities, a lot of pleasing things.

“I think more impressively for me is the players have taken it upon themselves to look after themselves over the summer to make sure they get a head start on their regime with us and I think it showed today.”

Meanwhile, Marine manager Dave Webb admitted that his group of players were given a schooling on the pitch and hopes that lessons can be learnt from Town’s performance going forward.

“Scoreline apart, it was an absolute footballing lesson,” he said.

“They were absolutely terrific. They came and I had a feeling after last year, where we had a good result, that it would be difficult and it certainly was.

“For me, we learnt how a midfield should rotate and how to be patient and pass the ball and look after it.

“They passed the ball into the right areas at the right time, didn’t make any mistakes and generally it was a lesson and the players have to look at that.

“When we go to (Royal Wootton) Bassett (July 23), we have to be looking after the football as well as Town did and dominate as well as Town did.”
