SWINDON Town head coach Luke Williams has admitted that he would like to strengthen his squad before the end of the transfer window.

Last summer, Town brought in a total of 14 players, including five loans, as they underwent a rebuild.

Despite seeing nine players head for the exit door, only three players have joined the club so far this close season, taking Town’s first-team squad to 18 – 20 if including scholars Will Henry and Louis Spalding.

While Williams has echoed chairman Lee Power’s sentiments that there is still plenty of time left to bring in new players, with more than a month until the transfer window closes, he knows there are areas in the squad that need adding to.

“We do have a little bit of work to do on recruitment. We need to strengthen a little bit and there is still time,” Williams told BBC Wiltshire. “We are particularly fussy about who we bring in because we want to make sure we’ve got the right people.

“Good players are in high demand and other clubs are tussling for their signature.

“We have to be in there, try to keep tabs on people and try to convince them this is the right place for them to play their football.

“There’s still time. We’ve still got targets that we’re pursuing.”

However, Williams is concerned about flooding his squad with new faces as he tries to keep the morale of the squad high.

The club’s trip to Ireland was used as a team-building exercise for Williams’ side and he wants to keep that close-knit feel this e season.

“It’s a balancing act, it always will be,” said Williams. “The more players you bring in, the more potential you have of a breakdown of team spirit and players becoming disillusioned because they feel like they are a long way from the team.

“That can have an effect. If you are not involved for long periods through the season, you’re a human being and you start to suffer.”

Meanwhile, former Swindon Town youth team manager Scott Lindsey has been charged by the FA for using abusive and/or insulting words towards the match officials during a U19s match in April.

Lindsey, who has since moved to Forest Green Rovers this summer, was alleged to have breached section E3 of the FA rules during Town’s U19 match with Yeovil Town in the Youth Alliance Merit League.
