GOALKEEPER Lawrence Vigouroux could take little consolation from a superb individual display as his efforts between the sticks were in vain during Swindon Town’s 3-1 defeat at Chesterfield.

The 22-year-old more than proved why Town chairman Lee Power and head coach Luke Williams were so keen to recruit him on a permanent basis from Liverpool over the summer following a successful loan stint last season.

Vigouroux pulled off a string of fine saves at the Proact Stadium on Saturday and without his heroics, Town’s defeat could easily have been even heavier.

The keeper’s afternoon was summed up by Chesterfield’s opening as he made a fine double stop but still saw his net bulge.

Vigouroux initially tipped Ched Evans’ free-kick onto the crossbar before getting up to deny Sam Hird’s follow-up but he was then let down by his team-mates, who failed to react to the loose ball and allowed Gary Liddle to head the Spireites in front.

However, Vigouroux stated that Town needed to take collective responsibility for their demise, himself included.

“Collectively it wasn’t good enough today,” Vigouroux told BBC Wiltshire.

“From the beginning we just weren’t great and we can only apologise to the people that have travelled today because that’s not good enough and we need to improve going forward.

“Luckily we have a game on Tuesday so it’s a quick turnaround and we can go to Gillingham and hopefully go there and play much better.

“I don’t count it as just my job (to stop the opposition scoring), I count it as the whole team’s job. We all could have done a bit better there (for the first goal).

“It was hard, we did what we could and today it wasn’t good enough. It’s back to the drawing board and we go again on Tuesday.”

A soft penalty following a nudge off the ball from Town skipper Nathan Thompson on Evans allowed the Spireites to take a 2-0 lead just before the break.

Town had already lost striker Luke Norris to injury inside the opening quarter of the game when the score was still goalless and Vigouroux reckons it was those small margins that cost Town dear.

“We gave away a penalty, I think it was a very soft penalty, right on the stroke of half-time and then we were chasing the game even more in the second half,” said Vigouroux.

“I got a hand on the penalty but these things happen.

“It was very hard (losing Norris). He did really well on Wednesday away at QPR but he came off injured early doors here. Maybe if he stays fit, the game’s a much different game.”
