NEW signing Nathan Delfouneso says Swindon Town’s attacking mantra is what persuaded him to join the club after revealing he turned down other interested parties to head to Wiltshire.

Former England U21 striker Delfouneso penned a one-year deal at the County Ground on Thursday and arrives on a free transfer following his release by Championship side Blackburn Rovers at the end of last season.

Delfouneso, who has 31 Premier League appearances to his name with Aston Villa, admits he knew little of Swindon as a town before signing his contract but was swayed by the club’s football philosophy under head coach Luke Williams.

Speaking to BBC Wiltshire ahead of his potential debut against Port Vale at the County Ground this afternoon, 25-year-old Delfouneso believes his move to Town can bring out the best in him.

“When I got a phone call last week saying about their interest, wanting me to come down and check everything out, I was like ‘okay’ but in terms of Swindon as a place, I have never actually been here before,” said Delfouneso.

“I have not played here but as a footballer, I knew of Swindon. I knew of their attacking mentality, the goals they score, the chances they create for their attacking players.

“I got told a lot of good things about it from various people and being around the boys for a few days last week as well; there is a great spirit, a great vibe, there is a great bond with the boys.

“I had a bit of interest before but it was more sorting out a few things with my family, in terms of my missus and my little one – I had to make sure they were all good.

“Football is a massive part but family comes first and I just had to go and make sure they were all good and happy, and I was always looking to go and sign once I got given the offer here and I am glad to be here and glad it’s all done.”

Delfouneso could be joined in the Town side against Port Vale today by fellow new arrivals Luke Norris and Lloyd Jones as well as Yaser Kasim. The trio all sat out Swindon’s 1-1 draw away at Gillingham on Tuesday night through injury. Jon Obika remains unavailable.

Head coach Williams said: “Luke and Lloyd will be in full training today (Friday) and will be available, provided that they come through training without any complications.”
