DAVID Mirfin headed Scunthorpe to a 1-0 win at Shrewsbury that lifted them to the top of Sky Bet League One.

Defender Mirfin grabbed the only goal following Jordan Clarke's cross deep in first-half stoppage time to secure Graham Alexander's side their fifth win of the season.

Overnight leaders Bolton slipped to second place after their unbeaten league start was halted in a 1-0 defeat at 10-man Walsall.

Walsall midfielder Joe Edwards received a straight red card in the 16th minute for his challenge on Chris Taylor, but on-loan Southampton defender Jason McCarthy struck the game's only goal in the 25th minute. Bolton had Keshi Anderson sent off at the death.

Bradford were held 1-1 at home against Bristol Rovers and dropped to fourth. Their game was temporarily delayed in the 65th minute by referee Andy Haines due to a drone circling the stadium.

Haines led the players back on to the pitch after a three-minute delay and although James Meredith headed Bradford in front in the 73rd minute, Rovers equalised through Charlie Colkett with four minutes to go.

Port Vale hit back from behind to move up to fifth and maintain their 100 per cent home league record this season in a 2-1 win against Gillingham.

Josh Wright put Gillingham ahead after 25 minutes but the Valiants struck twice late on through Remie Streete and Alex Jones.

Matt Done's second goal of the season was enough to sink Peterborough 1-0 at Bramall Lane and lift Sheffield United up to sixth. It was the Blades' fourth straight league win.

Steven Davies headed a late winner to clinch Rochdale their first league success of the season, 2-1 at home against Fleetwood.

Bobby Grant's 23rd-minute penalty, following Harrison McGahey's foul on David Ball, cancelled out Matty Lund's 10th-minute header for Rochdale, but Davies headed home in the 85th minute.

Southend registered their first home league win of the season with a 3-1 victory against Millwall.

Millwall striker Aiden O'Brien cancelled out David Mooney's sixth-minute opener, but Southend regained the lead through Stephen McLaughlin and Luke O'Neill added a late third.

Chesterfield climbed four places to 10th following a 3-1 home win against Northampton Conor Wilkinson fired his first goal for the club in the seventh minute and put Chesterfield two up four minutes into the second half. Although Paul Anderson pulled one back for Northampton, Dion Donohue made sure for the Spireites.

Coventry are still winless and dropped into bottom place after a goalless home draw against Oldham, and MK Dons are still chasing their first home league victory after being held 0-0 by Oxford.

AFC Wimbledon notched their first league away win of the season after hitting back to beat Charlton 2-1 at The Valley.

Ademola Lookman gave Charlton an eighth-minute lead, but the Dons hit back in the second half through Dominic Poleon and Tyrone Barnett's 85th-minute header.
