HEAD coach Luke Williams says he has no problem being the man to front up to the press to try to ease the fears felt by Swindon Town supporters at present.

Since his arrival as director of football back in November, Tim Sherwood has taken over responsibility for Town’s team selection and tactics from Williams.

However, it is still the head coach who oversees post-match press duties and Williams often has to explain poor results or performances that he is not entirely accountable for.

Williams is well aware that the County Ground faithful are becoming increasingly alarmed by a bad run in form that has Town languishing just above the League One relegation zone and he is eager to use post-game interviews as a way of speaking directly to fans, and attempting to allay some of their concerns.

“I love to come out and talk to the fans and at least try to explain a few things and also, many times, to come out and agree and say: ‘Yes, the performance wasn’t good enough’, and to let them know that we feel the same way on many occasions,” Williams said following Saturday’s 1-1 draw at home to Shrewsbury Town.

“Other times, it’s to try to defend the players when I think they have tried everything and the opposition was just too strong.

“I am very happy to be given the opportunity through you guys (in the media) to connect with the fans, however much they may not like me at the moment.”

Williams admits, that with Town in such a hazardous position, anxiety is beginning to creep into some of his players’ performances.

Despite their below-par run of form, Williams felt Swindon were still making the right tactical decisions on the pitch, but even that began to slip away against the Shrews.

“It was the one thing that I often felt we had an advantage over our opponents – we had intelligence and on Saturday, we seemed to play without out that,” said Williams.
