SWINDON Town’s Conor Thomas admits he is only thinking about the team and not his personal future as he adapts to being his side's utility man.

Having been brought to the County Ground as a defensive midfielder from Coventry City last summer, Thomas has gone on to occupy a centre-back role and most recently at Bolton Wanderers, he filled in at right-back.

Injuries have forced head coach Luke Williams and director of football Tim Sherwood to move Thomas about as they attempt to fill round holes with square pegs.

The former Coventry man has proven more than adept in his new roles and while this might prove to be detrimental to his long-term future as he loses his identity as a midfielder, he is not worried about that and is happy to be a team player if it leads to him getting minutes, and his team winning games.

“I don’t look at it like that,” he said in reply to being asked if he should be more selfish.

“If the team sees my best position is to fill in at right-back and I can help the team out there, you’ve literally just got to do it.

“It’s not as if I can turn my nose up at it. I see what you are saying but for me, as long as I can help the team and if I am playing, that is the most important thing.

“It was a different experience but when you win 2-1, under the circumstances, everyone on the coach went home happy.”

Thomas admitted he didn’t have long to prepare for his latest role ahead of last weekend, having had one training session to get to grips with the position.

While it may have been a role he wouldn’t have dreamed of playing just a year ago, he is happy to roll his sleeves up and hopes it will turn him into a more rounded player.

“I had (played in that role on) Thursday morning. That was the first time I have ever played right-back and on Friday, we didn’t really do any shape so it was just Thursday and then the game Saturday, so learning on the job really.

“They just put me in the position in the shape and that was it.

“They spoke to me a little bit about positioning and how the game would pan out and what to expect, and that was it really – just take it in your stride. I was quite pleased with how it went.”

He added: “When I was at Coventry, if someone had said to me: ‘you’re at centre-back tomorrow and then you’re at right-back next week’, I would have thought: ‘what’s going on here?’.

“It’s more credit to Luke and the coaching staff here, how they have made it easier for me and the coaching they have given me to help me out and be quite relaxed about it and take it in my stride.

“It is a bit different if you can have a few weeks working at it but that is football.

“Some days, you can come in and if there is an injury or something, you get told you are playing there and you have got to sink or swim. It’s a good learning curve.”
