THE SAGA surrounding the future of Millwall’s stadium has taken another twist after it was revealed that the sports foundation vying to seize the club’s land have falsely claimed to have a £2m ‘pledge’ from Sport England.

The Surrey Canal Sports Foundation, who are set up and financed by loans from Renewal – an offshore-registered developer with connections to senior Lewisham council officers – are bidding to acquire the land surrounding the Den by way of a compulsory purchase order, which will be voted on early next month.

Renewal are attempting to oust Millwall from their home as part of their £1bn New Bermondsey development plans and the Surrey Canal Sports Foundation was created to raise £40m to create a ‘sports village’ around the Den, but the Guardian reports that the organisation’s claim that they had secured £2m of Sport England funding is false.

Sport England say that the funding application they received from the Surrey Canal Sports Foundation, who have since taken down their website, was withdrawn in 2013.
