MY LOVE affair with Swindon Town has surely been tested this season. A box of chocolates and a dozen red roses will do nothing to paper over the cracks.

The clock is ticking. 15 games to go, 21 points still needed.

Along with Bury, Gillingham, Port Vale, Northampton Town, Shrewsbury Town, and Oldham Athletic all picking up points over the weekend, Swindon are now in the relegation zone. The job of ensuring that Town stay in League One has just got tougher.

After the game on Saturday, a game we should be targeting to get all three points, we put in a performance reminiscent of a broken team. A team that has all but accepted their fate. A team that will finish bottom of this league, being pegged back even by Coventry City.

As I see it, it’s any four teams from eight for the drop. Well probably, any three from seven, as Coventry are probably not going to get out of the bottom four.

The other six teams in the relegation battle are at least trying to do something about their plight. They are at least showing some fight. Of the bottom eight sides, Swindon were the only side not to find the back of the net at the weekend.

Personally, I was resigned to the team’s fate of the drop before Christmas. The trend has been there all season, but one can always hope that the squad and management will turn things around.

While it is still mathematically possible for Town to escape, I fear the worst, but hope for the best.

But as they say, it’s the hope that kills you.
