THE future of Swindon Town skipper Nathan Thompson remains up in the air as chairman Lee Power concedes that he doesn’t think he will commit to a new deal.

The 26-year-old, who has been at the club since the summer of 2007, took to the County Ground pitch on Saturday following the final whistle, with a supportive boot on his right foot, in what looked to be a farewell lap with the Town fans who stayed until the bitter end.

While no decision has been formally made about Thompson’s future, with the defender out of contract with the club this summer, chairman Power admits that is would be surprised if he and others, including striker Jonathan Obika, would still be at the club next season following the club’s relegation to League Two.

“I’m not sure,” Power told BBC Wiltshire when asked about Thompson’s fate, with no new deal on the table as it stands.

“Nathan is out of contract but we didn’t sit down and discuss it.

“I’ve known Nathan long enough and I wouldn’t have thought he would be here, no.

“He deserves to play higher than League Two, the same as Jon Obika. These guys let their contracts run out, which they are entitled to do, so I don’t think there’ll be there and we’re probably going to have a few others.”

Another whose future has been brought into question is goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux, who signed a three-year deal when he joined for a fee reported to be in the region of £400,000 from Liverpool last summer.

The goalkeeper’s impressive form this season, which saw him take a clean sweep of the end of season awards on Saturday, and having already admitted to turning down offers in the January transfer window, Power says he is unsure about what will happen with the 23-year-old in the coming weeks.

“We’ll sit down and talk to Lawrence and his representatives and see what he wants to do,” he added.

“We obviously need to put a strong squad together next year, finance that squad and get back as quick as we can.”
