SWINDON Town chairman Lee Power admits he has yet to make a decision over the future of head coach Luke Williams’ future.

Despite ambitions of turning Swindon into a Championship club when Power took over, two years after coming 90 minutes from that achievement, Town slumped to the lowest rung of the football league ladder on Saturday as a result of their 2-1 defeat to Scunthorpe and Bury beating Northampton Town 3-0 at Gigg Lane.

Power said he felt ‘devastated’ following the final whistle, taking his share of the blame for what can only be described as a dismal season but will not make his decision about whether Williams, who is showing no sign of stepping down from his role, will guide the team into League Two until a full inquest is carried out in the coming weeks.

“I know the players weren’t good enough, that’s easy to say because of where we are in the table,” he told BBC Wiltshire.

“I brought the majority of those players to the club so I take a huge slice of that blame.

“Regarding coaching, I’m just not sure. There’s a number of things that haven’t worked out, it’s been plain to see over the last few months.

“We decided to stick with what we had and see if we could limp our way out of it but it didn’t happen.”

Large sections of the fans have pointed the blame at Power for showing too much faith in Williams, who was handed a five-year contract at the club just last March.

However, with the appointment of director of football Tim Sherwood not having the desired impact before Christmas, Power says he is not sure if sacking Williams would have made any difference to Town’s eventual downfall.

“It’s easy to say that now because we are relegated but we put a team together that plays a certain way and we haven’t done that well enough,” he added.

“If we had brought a different manager in and made that change, he would have been left with players who play this way and I’m not sure if it would have made a difference.

“As a team we haven’t been good enough and as a football club, we haven’t been good enough.”
