FORMER Swindon Town player Tommy Miller believes David Flitcroft’s past success at masterminding promotion from League Two makes him the perfect person to take over at the County Ground.

Miller played for Town during the 2012-13 season before joining Bury for the following campaign, where he would be managed by Flitcroft for the second half of the season.

Flitcroft was able to lead the Shakers out of the fourth tier in 2014-15 after finishing third in the table and Miller thinks a man of that experience is exactly what Swindon need as they look to regroup following their relegation from League One this season.

“He’s an interesting character, he’s a deep thinker of the game,” said Miller, who has experience of the Swindon hotseat himself having been joint-caretaker manager alongside Darren Ward for two games in 2013 following the departure of Paolo Di Canio.

“He works hard and he studies everything. He’s big on his statistics, he won’t leave any stone unturned, he does his homework on the opposition fully and he knows his stuff.

“He did a good job at Bury to get them promoted and I am sure he can do a good job at Swindon, if he’s given the tools to work with. I think he is the right man. He has got the experience of getting a team out of League Two.

“He will be looking to build, he will be looking to bring his own players in and he will look to put a stamp of his philosophy on it straight from the word go. He is a good appointment and when he was first mentioned about getting the job, I thought it could be a perfect match.

“I messaged him the other day saying 'good luck' and telling him it’s a great club and to go and enjoy it.

“He’s relishing the challenge, I am sure he will do well and I think the supporters are pleased with the appointment. They will get behind him even more if he gets off to a good start.”

Miller racked up more than 500 Football League appearances during an 18-year career, which included spells in the top flight with both Ipswich and Sunderland, and he began and ended his professional career with Hartlepool in the fourth tier.

The 38-year-old reckons Flitcroft’s tactical adaptability means he can provide Town with sure footing down in League Two.

“He is quite open tactically. He wants to play football but he wants to play winning football and if that means going a bit long ball or whatever, he will assess it before every game,” said Miller.

“He will have a plan A and a plan B, there won’t be one system, which I think you need as teams can find you out. It’s important you have something else to change things up.

“I have said it many times but the lower down you go, the harder it becomes. The higher you go, you get more time and space on the ball, whereas the lower you go down, you get the ball and you’ve maybe got two men on you.

“He has been in that league so he will know exactly what to do. He knows how to set up and he’ll get the right characters in, I’m sure.”
