DAVID Flitcroft is not daunted by the prospect of largely having to build a new squad from scratch as he prepares to be officially unveiled as Swindon Town’s new manager tomorrow.

Flitcroft will meet the media at the County Ground for the first time tomorrow lunchtime, having been appointed as Luke Williams’ successor in the Town hotseat last Monday.

The former Bury and Barnsley boss arrives knowing he has desperately few players to work with initially, with only 10 members of last year’s first-team squad definitely contracted beyond the end of this month.

However, five deals have been offered to players whose current contracts expire on June 30, while first-team contracts have also been put out to three academy scholars.

Flitcroft says he will arrive at Town without any fear and has no doubt that he can persuade prospective players to join him at the club.

“I am really excited about the challenge of building a new team and that is something that is really exciting me at this minute,” said Flitcroft.

“Knowing that the players are out there, it’s about making sure we get the balance right, making sure we’re flexible and adaptable in what we do.

“There is good quality out there, there is good value for money and I have always been able to attract players who have been on fantastic money before and sold them the cause.

“The success I have had is in developing players, whether that was at Rochdale or at Barnsley or at Bury.

“We sold Leon Clarke on for good money, Chris Hussey got developed and sold.

“James Vaughan came in and now he is the most wanted man. There are players out there that I know I can go and get and make better.

“They certainly want to play for Swindon Town and they want to play for Dave Flitcroft because they know what that is about.”

Having been without a manager for a month, Town’s recruitment drive ahead of the new season has been a slow burner so far and they are yet to make any announcements over new signings.

However, Flitcroft, who did scouting work for Premier League side Leicester City in the wake of losing his job at Bury last November, does not feel that delay will have hurt Town as players to have moved around lower league clubs already would likely have been out of their reach anyway.

“Recruitment wise, I don’t think we could have afforded the players who are at the top end,” added Flitcroft.

“I have been working strategically with Leicester and have been speaking to so many different people and looking at every U23 game going.

“Those players have already been signed by the real big hitters in League One and the big hitters in League Two. We probably weren’t in the market for them.”
