NEW Swindon Town manager David Flitcroft is relishing the pressure of trying to guide the club back into League One at the first attempt following his official unveiling this afternoon.

Flitcroft and Town chairman Lee Power both appeared in front of the media at the County Ground, with the latter making it clear that the new boss’ remit was an immediate promotion following last season’s relegation.

In a wide-ranging press conference, it was also confirmed that Tim Sherwood has left the club following a stint as director of football.

Flitcroft, who has been given control of the club’s transfer policy, a role previous overseen by Power, stated that he is working hard to bring in new faces but that none were in the offing immediately, while there has been no commitment from the five players out of contract this month who have been offered fresh deals.

Although Flitcroft faces a busy summer, with a full pre-season programme to organise as no friendlies have yet to be arranged, he is not daunted by the challenge ahead.

“I have been out of work for six months and not had that pressure on a Saturday,” said Flitcroft, who lost his job at Bury last season.

“I wanted that feeling when you come in on a Saturday. I never took it for granted and I missed.

“Talking to the chairman, the ambition to get out of this league, if he hadn’t mentioned, I would not have been interested in taking the job. Now it’s about how you do it.

“I love doing this, I love being a manager and galvanising a team and building a team.

“I have come into this situation, I know the remit I know what we are trying to achieve and I want that in my life.”

Following the dismissal of head coach Luke Williams in the wake of Town’s relegation, chairman Power is convinced Flitcroft is the right man to mastermind their revival, citing his success at winning a promotion from League Two with Bury as a key factor.

“There were a number of mistakes that happened last year and a number of people involved in them but at the end of the day, I sail this ship and I have to take full responsibility for that,” said Power.

“We find ourselves now in League Two, which is a completely different proposition to League One, and we needed someone well versed in getting promotion and David got Bury out of this league.

“I just feel that’s what we need for this season coming up and we’re delighted to have him.

“We feel we have got the right man now to try to get us back at the first attempt and David will be doing everything he can to get us back to League One.”
