NEW Swindon Town signing Matt Taylor only has promotion back to League One on his agenda after dropping down a division from Northampton Town.

The 35-year-old had triggered a clause in his contract at Sixfields at the end of last season that saw him sign a 12-month extension with the League One club.

However, knowing that game time would be limited with the Cobblers, with the likes of former Swindon Iraqi international Yaser Kasim ahead of him in the pecking order, he was given permission to look for a new club.

Living locally, the Oxford-born midfielder, who had spells in the Premier League with Portsmouth, Bolton Wanderers, West Ham United and Burnley, opted for a move closer to home, penning a one-year deal at the County Ground, with manager David Flitcroft proving a big pulling point, as well as the club’s fan base.

“I know the manager and I’m excited by the project of trying to get the team promoted out of this league and back into League One," he told the club’s website.

“I live locally so I know that the football club is well supported and it is another challenge for me that I’m really looking forward to and I’m really excited about it.

“There seems to already be a togetherness within the group of players and they seem to be doing really well, so I’m really excited.

“I’ve had promotion from League Two when I was a lot younger and I’m still ambitious and success is promotion from League Two.

“The players that the manager has brought in and the players that were here last season are all on board with that and it is exciting times.

“It will be nice to be a part of it.”
