DAVID Flitcroft has few issues with the way his Swindon Town side are defending their own goal but has called for “bravery’’ from his men at the other end of the pitch.

Tuesday night’s 1-0 home defeat by Lincoln City was another example of the County Ground men having plenty of possession, but failing to turn it into anything more tangible as they were picked off by Sean Raggett’s late winner.

That added up to a fourth defeat on home soil for Flitcroft’s side this season but while the manager believes that in general, his men are shaping up well at the back, they are not performing with the same authority in attack, especially in front of their own supporters.

“We’ve put a lot of decent quality in the box but it’s a real conundrum that we’ve not scored in that second half,’’ said the Town chief.

“We’ve certainly created enough chances, got the ball down and dominated in the second half and there was only one team that ever looked like they were going to win it.

“I don’t want players hiding from getting into goalscoring positions, that’s one thing we’ll speak to them about.

“The best goalscorers out there, they’ll always keep getting chances and keep trying to get on the end of a cross. We’ve not executed that.’’ In contrast to their home struggles Town have had few problems finding the net on their travels, Saturday’s 3-1 win at Mansfield the latest example of their comfort on the road.

But while Tuesday’s loss hardly carried echoes of earlier home humblings by Barnet and Crawley this term, Flitcroft is still concerned that they are left susceptible by not converting those chances.

“It’s a concern and we have to get that right,’’ he said.

“It’s not for the want of trying but you are not going to win a football match if you haven’t got that discipline to not concede goals.

“We have moved on from the Barnet game, but that’s four defeats at home - it’s not good enough.

“The players know that, they’ll understand that and it’s up to us to put it right.’’ He added: “We’ve conceded from two set pieces all season so it’s nothing to do with being too nice. We’ve set up well.

“You’ve got to deal with set pieces in this league and we have done really well. That’s not a concern.

“But when you have got momentum and you are on top and you know you are on top, it takes real bravery to take that shot instead of maybe turning away from that shot.

“To take it and step forward and being very brave and bold and not worrying about missing.’’
