WITH Town suffering more than a mild dose of the collywobbles at the Energy Check County Ground this season, tomorrow’s opponents Wycombe Wanderers would probably have been bottom of the list of invited guests for a League Two clash.

Much has been made of the contrast between David Flitcroft’s Swindon side on the road and the version to put in an appearance on their own turf to date in the 2017-18 campaign, with Town having won just two of their seven games at headquarters.

Five wins from seven on their travels have mitigated their problems in Wiltshire but when it comes to form away from home, Wycombe’s exploits put those of Flitcroft’s men into perspective.

The Buckinghamshire outfit’s unbeaten away run stretches not only through the seven games of the current campaign but back 13 games and 33 weeks to February 21 and a 1-0 defeat at Colchester United.

A last-gasp Paris Cowan-Hall equaliser for a 3-3 draw at Carlisle on Tuesday preserved that run, a record that boss Gareth Ainsworth insists is no accident.

“When we travel away together, we’re a tight-knit group and that’s come from my five years in charge being all about being a team and being there for each other,’’ he told wycombewanderers.co.uk.

“That’s never more prominent than when we’re on the road, coming up against the atmosphere from the home fans.

“We relish it, we stick together and we’ve got this never-say-die attitude which makes me proud to be the manager.”

Ainsworth concedes his side were off colour in midweek but is gearing his men up for the challenge of facing a side he believes will be among the promotion candidates.

“It’s a sign of a good side when you don’t play well but get something,” he added.

“We all know we didn’t play to our potential, but we’ve had a lot of games lately and maybe that was one game too far for a couple of lads.

“It was fantastic to score at the death and get something from Carlisle which is a tough place to come.

“This team doesn’t know when it’s beaten, and even when we’re not playing as well as we know we can, we believe we can get something from games.

“Swindon are a big team in this division and they’re expected to go up, so wouldn’t it be nice to go there and get something from the game.”
