HIS attacking players may have been the ones picking up the majority of the plaudits after Swindon Town’s 2-1 League Two win at Yeovil Town on Saturday, but manager David Flitcroft insists performances further back in his Huish Park line-up should not be overlooked.

While the likes of goalscorers Kellan Gordon, Keshi Anderson, John Goddard plus substitute Kaiyne Woolery garnered headlines for their winning input in Somerset, Town also overcame the early setback of Rhys Browne’s opener for Yeovil to deliver another solid performance at the back.

Goalkeeper Reice Charles-Cook was largely shielded from serious danger by the back four of Ben Purkiss, Olly Lancashire, Matt Preston and Matty Taylor, although it was the performance of the man just in front of them that captured Flitcroft’s eye.

James Dunne was walking something of a disciplinary tightrope, having picked up four bookings this term to leave himself one short of a one-match ban, but his manager lauded the maturity and professionalism of the 28 year old for being the glue for the Town display that was delivered.

“I thought James Dunne’s performance (was excellent),’’ said Flitcroft. “He was on a booking (one away from suspension) and we’ve spoken about it all week and disciplined him all week in terms of, you can’t give fouls away.

“Every foul he gave away, we gave a free kick for it in training and I thought it was such a professional performance.

“He kept the ball ticking over, his pass completion was fantastic and he really was the kingpin in the midfield.

“When you have got two attacking midfielders in Timi (Elsnik) and Johnny Goddard either side of you and then you’ve got Keshi and Kellan, you have got to keep people on a tight rein - you’ve got to keep discipline. I thought it (Dunne’s display) was outstanding.’’ Dunne will run the disciplinary gauntlet again at Grimsby tonight but his Saturday showing was just one example of the kind of character Flitcroft is seeking from his squad.

Another was Woolery, who had to make do with a place on the bench having started the previous draw with Chesterfield, but responded in exactly the manner his manager expected when he was introduced at Huish Park, setting up the winning goal for Anderson.

“Wools has been fantastic,’’ added Flitcroft.

“He knew he wasn’t playing (on Friday). We did a training session after with the players that weren’t playing and his attitude and response was fantastic. I was delighted with the response and that’s what we’ve been able to grow.

“We’ve not had anyone sulking because we’ve not been in the team - they all want to be in the team, by the way.

“If you go on the pitch and you’re frustrated because you’re not in the team, you can’t do your job. Kaiyne came on and showed a fantastic energy to what he did.
