DAVID Flitcroft does not think Swindon Town’s trip to Accrington Stanley this afternoon carries any more significance in terms of their promotion aspirations.

Accrington currently sit third in the League Two table, while Town are just one place outside the play-off spots in eighth.

However, defeat for Flitcroft’s side at the Wham Stadium would mean they are eight points adrift of the three automatic promotion places as the season nears its halfway stage.

Although Flitcroft believes those trying to assess how the fourth tier will unfold will think the outcome might be a significant barometer on what the two clubs are capable of this term, the Town boss himself does not view it as any more important than any other match his side have played so far this term.

“It is just important full stop,” said Flitcroft, whose side are only out of the play-off positions on goal difference and sit just one point behind Wycombe Wanderers in fifth.

“The first game against Carlisle was important, the away game against Morecambe was important, they are all the same.

“Everyone else will put a significance on it but it’s just an away game we want to be competitive in and we will travel there knowing our preparation has been good to commit to an away performance.”

Plenty of sides in League Two are known for their physicality on the field but Accrington are a team better who prefer to get the ball down and play along the floor.

John Coleman’s side boast one of the division’s top marksmen in Billy Kee, who has scored 11 times in all competitions this season, so Flitcroft is well aware of the threats that await his side at the Wham Stadium.

“John has got them playing,” said Flitcroft. “They move the ball about really well. They work the ball through Billy Kee and get Sean McConville and Jordan Clark in the game quickly to support Billy, with Kayden Jackson running in behind.

“They have got good weapons and they are playing with confidence, so we are going to have to nullify their threats and play to our strengths.”
