NEARLY 60 football teams competed for silverware in the annual Cricklade six-a-side tournament over the weekend.
And Liden Community lifted the adult trophy on Saturday with a 2-0 victory over Sunday KMLC - a category that 27 sides entered.
Following the success of the first day, Sunday’s junior event was split into four age groups - under 10, under 11, under 14 and under 16.
Laverstock & Ford triumphed over Ramsbury A on penalties in the final of the under 10 category, while AFC Abbeymeads B were under 11 winners thanks to a 2-0 win against Eldene Rangers.
In the under 14 age group, Malmesbury A saw off the challenge of Wootton Bassett A, and it took a marathon penalty shootout for Liden Community A to win the under 16 cup over Cricklade Youth A, with both goalkeepers having to take spot kicks following every outfield player having their turn.
The tournament was held at Cricklade Leisure Centre and organiser Guy Whinfrey said: “It was a great day - everything went to plan and it ran really smoothly.
“The weather was superb and we couldn’t have asked for it any better, although there were a few sunburned people.
“The adult tournament is now in its second year but it’s the first year that we’ve had junior teams taking part.
“It went really well and it’s something we will definitely continue to run in the future.”
