SWINDON TOWN: Boss to break news to players by phone
PAOLO Di Canio is set to start letting players know whether or not they are required for next season, but he’ll be doing so over the phone.
The Swindon manager is planning for life in League One after adding an extra two years to his contract with the Robins, and he has already revealed that he will significantly alter the make-up of the Town squad as he bids to secure back to back promotions.
Phil Smith, Mark Scott, Lander Gabilondo and Callum Kennedy all left the club earlier in the summer after their contracts were not renewed, and Di Canio has hinted that he will be showing several others the exit door in the coming weeks.
Following the delay in him signing the extension to his deal in Wiltshire, however, Di Canio will no longer be able to inform those players who will not be required next season in person, with the majority away on holiday.
“I waited because it wasn’t honest to say to every single player, ‘next year you are part of the plan, next year you are not part of the plan’, if I wasn’t sure that I was part of the plan,” he said.
“Not because I wanted to the leave the club but because I wanted to be sure that the money to build the team was there, because I wanted to be sure that a contract was clear that I would be here for another two years.
“It wasn’t honest, if everything wasn’t clear, to say, ‘Anthony, Freddie, Frank, you’re part or not part of the plan’.
“It’s obvious that from now I am sad to say this, I will do this now by telephone. I would have done it to their faces.”
