HALF-TIME: Swindon Supermarine 0 Swindon Town 1
SWINDON Town lead Swindon Supermarine 1-0 at half-time in two sides’ pre-season friendly clash at the Webbs Wood Stadium this evening.
Town took the lead on the quarter-hour when Tommy Miller latched onto Alan Navarro’s free-kick to flick the ball beyond Marine stopper Ian Gill.
The Robins should have added to their advantage before the break, as Paul Benson spurned a golden chance from close range and Troy Archibald-Henville saw his bullet header brilliantly save by Gill, but they were forced to settle for a single goal cushion at the interval.
Here are the key moments from today’s first half: Two mins: Alan McCormack is robbed in midfield by Ashley Edenborough and, after he can’t quite find space for a shot inside the box, Dan Hilder’s effort is blocked.
Three mins: Town quickly counter after their early scare and Paul Benson’s dipping strike from 18 yards out is saved comfortably by Ian Gill Seven mins: Gary Roberts collects the ball on the left flank and his centre finds Benson in acres of space. However, the striker takes too long deciding where to place his shot and the chance is gone.
15 mins: GOAL 0-1 (Miller) Town have enjoyed a lot of success from set pieces over the course of pre-season, and this is just another example.
Roberts is hacked to the ground on the edge of the box, left of centre, and Alan Navarro’s teasing free-kick is tucked home by Tommy Miller.
19 mins: Troy Arcihald-Henville rises at the back post, unmarked, to meet Navarro’s corner but the centre-back should do better than head harmlessly over the crossbar.
24 mins: Benson picks up Andy Williams’ headed flick on and releases Matt Ritchie down the right.
Although the winger fails to get his first cross into the danger area, he picks out Navarro with his second attempt and the former Brighton man should do better than drag his right-footed effort wide.
27 mins: Town are within inches of adding to their tally as Navarro’s dead ball finds an unmarked Archibald-Henville at the back post.
However, the ex-Exeter man’s fine header is superbly saved by Gill, flying down low to his left to paw the ball to safety.
29 mins: This one really is a sitter.
Roberts cross from the left finds its way to Ritchie at the back post and when he lays the ball inside to Benson, on his own and four yards from goal, it seems impossible for the forward not to hit the target.
Instead of burying the ball beyond Gill, however, Benson contrives to fluff his lines, scuff the ball and waste a golden chance.
42 mins: Jay McEveley bullies his way down the left flank and his deep cross to the back post is met by the onrushing Ritchie. However, the winger cannot find the target with his side-footed volley.
