CHRIS Martin would take a scrappy tap-in off his backside against Carlisle this afternoon as he looks to end his Swindon Town goal drought.

Martin could play his final game for the Robins, with his loan spell from Norwich set to end at the final whistle of today’s game, and if that is the case he wants to go out on a high.

Talks continue regarding a possible extension to his stay in Wiltshire, with no offers having come in for the striker from elsewhere, but should terms not be agreed the 24-year-old is keen to leave Town with at least one goal to his name.

Martin has not scored in seven appearances since arriving at the County Ground in November, and would be happy to celebrate any kind of strike this weekend.

He said: “As a forward, if we knew why we weren’t scoring goals we would be onto a winner. Sometimes you have those patches where you can score goals for fun, like James (Collins) came on and scored four goals the other day.

“Sometimes you can go on runs like 10 goals in eight games, seven in seven and stuff like that. Sometimes you go on a drought and not score in five, six or seven games like I’ve been on.

“To try to put my finger on it I can’t do but what I’ve said all along is I’ll keep working hard and chances will come along and hopefully one will go in off my backside or my knee or my shin and that will start a run.

“That’s what the lads have been saying to me here to try to keep me going. Once you get one the rest will follow. It’s funny how that can go sometimes. You can go five or six games without scoring and then score in every game for three, four or five games. Hopefully that sort of run is a game away for me, it can turn that quickly.”

Martin was the man who made way for Collins against Portsmouth on New Year’s Day, and he recounted his fellow striker’s extraordinary 22-minute blitzkrieg on the Pompey defence.

He said: “I was happy for Collo because he’s been a little unlucky not to get more minutes on the pitch I feel, since I’ve been here. We’ve been winning games and you have to take your chance when it comes.

“He’s done that. He’s come in and scored four goals. It was surreal sitting there and watching it. We were laughing on the sideline after two and three, and he got an assist as well, it’s probably the best 25 minutes or half an hour of football I’ve seen someone have. He was absolutely on fire.”
