If you witnessed Trundle being played out of the match in a Reserve game at the CG, by one of our "Youths" late last season you would wonder why the interest in the Guy. He is a Shadow of his former self. Better bet if you want an "Old un" to put it in the net is to get Sammy back from Plymouth. He (Trundle) could have an "Inspired" return to form, but I wouldn't be confident of that.

but we do need a new striker. doesn't matter who we get sure trundle could do the job

Having only one striker ready to play would make you think the defence and/or midfield would be stronger but that´s quite the contrary according to this complimentary scoreline! Let´s not lose our heads already though as this is the first day of the season. If this goes on for the next 3-4 games then there we need to be worried.

What a lucky escape I had. Broke down on M4 on the way to the game this morning! All the pre season tension and excitement gone in 90 minutes!!!

brandy may well be a realistic loan signing. however, my money is on the two strikers being trundle (obviously) and le fondre from rochdale, they have apparently had interest from a league one club

no tommy g of course im not a fan have been a season ticket holder since 1976..FACT 1st year i have not been able to AFFORD one due to job loss so please have some respect for a REAL town fan i listened to commentary on bbc kent we were shambolic....FACT leeds fans should know about lucas....FACT i am just vetting my frustrations out as i am GUTTED by this result......and i think i have every right to express my view HOPEFULLY we will improve but i really fear for this season

i didn't say you have no opinion, i don't feel it is fair to call lucas a sh*t keeper after one bad game FOR THE WHOLE TEAM. in fact, a poster on 606 said lucas had pretty much no chance with any of the goals. if i've offended you, then sorry but i'm frustrated as well and i just don't think that it was a great comment to say that you were glad that you didn't get a season ticket, frustrated or not, particually if you have had one for more than 30 years

I,ve been a big suppotrer of DW since day 1 and still am but I think tactically he made some mistakes today. Macnamee shouldn't have played up front 1st half. He is much better out wide and was the only player in my opnion to come away with any credit whe he was moved there in 2nd half. Amankwah is useless as a winger cause he just runs out of space everytime. He should have been right back cause Cuthbert was clarly not match fit. I think JPM would have been a better option in midfield to provide a bit of creativity. DW however was not helped by some awful individual performances...Greer and Lescinal being the main culprits. I think its a bit unfair to blame Lucas. Not a lot he could have done about goals and pulled off one cracking save.

I think this is just a freak performance. Anyone who has seen these players before know that they are better than this. I'll still be there on Tuesday night because I believe in this team. However, another performance like this in the near future and serious questions will need to be answered.

P.S. We now desperatly need other options upfront.

Absolutely bang on SAPfan.Yes very shocked and just wondering why we folded like a pack of cards but hardly the time to come out with all this told you so garbage. Real fans would try and put matters into perspective and evaluate just what happened to our team instead of throwing insults around. No excuses we were diabolical but one game certainly is no time for making accusations and judgements they should be saved for Christmas time or after. No one really expected that result so where did it come from. Reality is many Town fans are shocked as will big spending Norwich fans who are 5-0 down at home to Colchester. These type of results are freak to say the least and I would expect Danny and the Town to bounce back in the right manner. Its all to easy to blame the striker situation but would Rooney have made any difference or Billy Sharp made any difference who really knows. Gillingham had a game plan with 5 in midfield and we could not cope and actually got worse as the game went on and folded. I will reserve judgement and still support AF and Danny and just hope this was a blip. Good thing that we have 4 Goalkeepers suspect that we are going to need them after this.

Well said mate totally agree with that. I believe Danny may have been guilty of some experimenting and we got blitzed from their 5 in midfield tactic and worry was that we never answered it and folded alarmingly. Just hope it was one of those freak results like Norwich 5-0 down at home.

I'm sorry Mikek, whilst know one was expecting a 5-0 thrashing there were a number of posts in the last couple of days concerned that we would get beat so the scorline may be a surprise but the result certainly is not. With regards to one game doesn't indicate a season, of course that's right but in an article last week DW himself spoke about the importance of a good start.

I'm less worried than I am this time last season as we've a much better manager in DW and the problem is obvious rather than all over the pitch (I hope...). I personally don't think AF has done enough. We should not have let Cox go until we had a replacement - if wba wanted him so badly then there must have been a loan signing deal to have had. Theo on a gentlemans handshake was amateurish as is the striking position we are now in.

I'll be getting behind the team on Tuesday and Saturday as it's the only thing us fans can do.

Seems to me that Swindon fans fall into three broad categories...

1. So grateful to Fitton and new regime for saving the club that it doesn't matter what happens, what peoples' opinions are, just be grateful we still have a club etc.

2. Fully trust Danny Wilson to sort it out, give him time to build his own team.

3. Less than excited by appointment of DW, grateful to but concerend that new regime see this as a 'project' to demonstrate that you run a lowly club properly and balance the books, but completley baffled by losing four out of five strikers and not signing any.

Well I remain firmly in category 3.
I didn't go to Gillingham as it was too early a kick-off and not living in Swindon have not seen the new signings. You cannot expect owners to throw their own money down the drain at a loss-making club (although nice if they did) which is why you look to the management team for their coaching, scouting, motivational skills, and contacts in the game to bring in loan signings etc. The jury is still very much out for me, but hopefully today was a nasty anomaly and a seriously loud wake-up call.

The result was still a disgrace, and one we won't hear the last of for a long time. Thank God the Rivals.net messageboard is down at the moment.

what i meant was, just because we were dreadful today, it doesn't mean we are going to have a dreadful season and be stuck in a relegation battle for the whole season, although im sure some people will want to dispute that with me as we have played a whole 90 mins out of the 4140 we will play in the league this season

What a disgraceful way to treat supporters on the opening day of the season. I include those who travelled and those have purchased season tickets.
All the talk throughout the summer has been about what good players we would be signing and how many of them – what a load of rubbish!
Something will have to be done quickly or else you will finish with gates of around 3000 and finish in Div2.
Don’t say it can’t be done there are many examples of other clubs being able to do so.

There is absolutely no explanation for this result whatsoever! One Off/Unlucky/No Forwards/Bad Manager/ Bad Defence. The debate could go on forever. All we can do is keep the faith. Ok, I am a Gills fan and was at the game today, let me tell you what happened. Your defence is very poor, especially Amankwaah I think his name is, he nearly passed it into his own net. Our winger, Barcham, was running rings round him the whole game! Most of the game your team didn't do too badly, it was just that today, everything we tried worked...

Such as the first goal, Nutter playing an 80 yard pass which happened to find Jackson, who took it first-time impeccably(One of the few things he is usually not good at) and managed to find Bentley unmarked.

Your midfield is ok, O'Brien down the wing looks very good. But you definitely need a striker, Paynter just isn't physical enough, he kept getting outmuscled. On the other hand there were two of your players I was very impressed with, one being the keeper, made some absolutely fantastic saves, one of which got a round of applause from our fans. The other player was McNamee, he looks like a brilliant player, he went past our players time and time again, and at one time he took on four at once and still maanged to come through with the ball!

well just got back from the game, 2 words oh dear, firstly gills were nothing special far from it, not that im taking anything away from them, which leads me to say if this was one of the big teams in this league it coud have been 10
we looked like a non league side at times and to say this was embarasing is an understatement, we no we need strikers but we also need a defence, 2nd half they were all over the place, the worst part about the whole sorry affair was the fact that with about 15 mins left every player just gave up, seasons arnt about the 1st game i no, BUT if this mess isnt sorted quickly its going to be the same as last season if not worse,

It's rotherham not northampton mate. League 2 club so unlikely town will say he was a target even if he was as.

Not a good start! The hopeful punt up the line to nobody is not a good tactic. As Gills fan mentions above Mcnamee was ok taking people on as we know, just same old end product, i.e. not a lot. All the loose balls fell to Gills players who seemed more up for it. We did actually have a few half chances but noone good enough to put them away whereas they did. Could be a long season or the kick they needed? time will tell I guess. Remember beating Reading away 3-1 a few years back, they went up that season....not sure what I'd have prefered in the long run.......tho it was a great day!!

On a side note i Left when the 4th went in as did quite a few others and saw some poor bloke get an absoulte kicking at the level crossing just down from the away end. 2 guys had stopped their car and were just laying into him in the road. Looked like it was all about to kick off as police and people piled out of side streets. Noone could get to him to help as the level crossing was down. Didn't hang around to see it unfold further. Anyone else see this?

Anyway, I only recently got back due to being stuck on the M25 for ages...and it was an appauling performance, the worst I have seen since I saw us get hammered 7-1 against Forest a few years back. Other that McNamee and Macklin, the team were shocking - especially Timlin, Morrisson and Cuthbert.

And the honest truth is that even if we had Cox, or had signed any other decent striker, we would still have got hammered today as our midfield and defence were simply shocking. I am in no way saying we dont need another striker, I am desparate for one. But for people to blame the result on the fact we havn't signed a forwards, is ridiculous. I was going to start a really long drawn out rant about only dropping 3 points out of 138, or even about us not having any money (10 million in debt, and AF trying to turn around a 1.75 mil per season deficit, on 7500 av gate receipts etc)... but I don't see the point any more after reading some of the comments on here.

I wonder if you would all be so keen to "splash the cash" if it was your own money you were throwing in, while we were still operating at a yearly loss? Maybe not me thinks.

Money doesn't always buy success, I think the frustration is with all the false hopes and starts that have happened with trying to get players. How did we manage when we had no cash to flash.
Somehow we did get players in and if I remember rightly we hit the playoffs in Div1.
Trouble is now with this result it has inflamed the situation, if it had been 0-1 0-2 probably the reaction would not have happened, although as regards points it is the same as 0-5

yes the club has been loosing money and was saved by fitton and co. However, the club will only turn these losses into profit when the club stats doing well. This starts with good markteting of which so far they have been second to none. Also improving the squad which genually they havnt done to bad but this improvement on the squad has been done on a shoestring

you have to remember it'snot just fitton in this consortium, all of which are millionares. I'm not saying that they have to go and spend 10 million on the squad but they do certanly have to spend more than they have.

And I'm not just saying this to dissagree with u but if I was worth what fitton and co are worth then yes I think I would have spend 2-3million on players.

It's so important to start well in this league, this helps gets the attendance up, team spirit, atmosphere around the club improves dramticly.

Some very interesting debate on here after that nightmare with one particular comment from gills fan who mirrored some of my thoughts, and thanks for your kind input. Simply my thoughts are that Danny tried a permutation that backfired with unfit Cuthbert at rightback Amankwah all at see in a right midfield come winger. McNamee had a great game according to the gills fan and our best player.Even more interesting the gills fan reckons Paynter was out of his depth yes I agree huff and puff but my sentiments exactly Paynter is not a big enough or strong enough target man and until Danny realises this then we will be going nowhere. At least 3 strikers are needed and most of all a big forward, good in the air and able to hold the ball, plus l still feel we need a couple more players possibly left back and midfielder. It seemed we failed to respond to the Gills formation especially 5 in the middle and everything went completely down hill. Big surprise from gills fan was that Lucas made some fantastic saves and was rated with Macca as our 2 best players. Very surprised with the final result but hopefully it will shake Fitton up enough to let go of the restraints on funding if this is the issue that is making Danny channel his search in the loans or free-be,s market. I realise that Fitton has stated the loans could be with a view to signing but there is a danger that we bump up the end fee with Coxy type situation. I note madterrier forum comments of AF,s saving of our club possibly causing fans to have misguided thoughts on the state of the team and is a very interesting read and makes some sense. This post does have plenty of substance and makes some interesting points on 3 categories to see where we as fans think we fit into. Danny did sound completely shocked in his evaluation of the game but I still think mistakes were made in team choice and formation especially Cuthbert.

mikek - excellent post - the bit that really worries me - is the DW experimenting - this seems to be an issue with him, I've heard this from different sources. This may have been forced on him to a degree today, I can remember some Hartlepool fans saying wait till your left back starts the game as right mid field and your centre half as centre forward etc.

Why was the fastest defender in L1 doing on the bench for the whole game? Gillingham were kiling us with pace up front and we still stuck with Greer and Morrison, both not quick to say the least. Certainly three or four of there goals came from pace. The only way we could combat this was to put on Ifil but we continued to plod along and let the Gills run riot.
This was obvious with the advent of there first and second goals but nothing was done. This is somewhat worrying.

I agree with Mikek in that todays result was largely down to tactical errors and some poor individual performances. (glad Gills fans picked up on Lucas though). I'm not too concerned yet and think by and large the season will be a big movement forward on last season. Just a quick note on AF, I know many people are upset by the percieved lack of financial support he has given DW but i'm not so sure this is the case. I think the money is available but neither DW or AF want to pay over the odds (rightfully in my opinion) and other clubs tend to put big price tags on strikers. This makes finding the right deal hard. I don't want Swindon to head down the route of over investing in players and winding up with top heavy wage bills or tied into expensive signings with add-on clauses. In the long term thats a bad route to go down. If the consortium pull out for whatever reason the club could be in a bad way. We don't want to rely on the finances of certain individuals.

On plus side, at least we didn't have to go to Gillingham later in the year when it was pi**ing down with rain....or am I clutching at straws a bit here.

The back 4 were particularly bad with Greer and Cuthbert continually hoofing the ball forward straight to Gillingham players, unbelievable! I'm hoping that Cuthbert was just not match fit and shouldn't have played because on today's performance he def doesn't look a "quality" signing. I thought our midfield pairing of Timlin and Douglas didn't work. Timlin was dire.

This result is a big reality check for Wilson and Fitton. The notion that we can get by with the squad we've got is totally wrong. We can't! Apart from needing couple of strikers, we also need to strengthen midfield and buy a left back.

Get your cheque book out AF and spend some of the £900K you got from selling Cox. And no more feeble excuses about missing out on targets, it just won't do!

same here.... what happened to the football we were playing against wba. nice short passing moves along the ground??? just wasnt there today. i think cuthbert was absolutly abismal... probably the worst player on the pitch. hoofball all game. timlin and douglas did nothing either and i think o'brien is only useful if he's got 50 yards of open space in front of him. don't think we'll be seeing him beat too many men this season! reminds me of david duke with a bit of pace.

LJF, BP, JPM and maybe even timlin although the jury is still out on him

Francois sounded like he had a mare today and makes too many mistakes

Billy just isn't quick or strong enough

JPM lacks effort in my estimation and can be very lazy

I've been writing this now for a while now and can't see what I've wrote now on my iPhone so if you don't agree then that's cool, but this is what I think.

Lets just hope we can BUY some decent players before next week and put this week well behind us and lets just pretend the seasons starts next weekend

ljf in my opinion was probably the strongest defender we had today. greer cuthbert morrison were the ones who had mares or at least were the ones who were at fault for the goals. saying that ljf was turned inside out on a couple of occasions! timiln did seem out of his depth i agree and bp was given sod all service other than one of the defenders hoofing the ball up the length of the pitch.
i just think the players went in to it with the wrong attitude and desire.
i'll blame it on the early start!!!

can i just clear one thing up. im not someone who thinkd that the sun shines out of AF and DW's a**es, contrary to popular belief. im just a beliver in patience. making snap decisions and sacking managers after a few defeats (although clearly nobody sane is calling for that yet) or signing the first player who becomes available will not help the club that I love.

I truely believe that what we have lacked over the last few years is stability and vision for the future. this club has a vision, and if we give danny time, stability will come too and success will follow.

i've just managed to calm down after that terrible performance today. you counldnt just pick out one bad player today, they were all bad. we couldnt pass the ball, timlin never turns with the ball instead he recieves the ball then knocks it back to a full back to hoof it up the pitch. nobody wanted the ball, nobody made themselves available to recieve the ball, no creativity.had we had coxy, ronaldo, rooney whoever upfront today it really would not have made any difference.the striker problem can not be used as an excuse today, paynter hardly had ball played to him, when he did - the pass was 10 ft above his head,he never stood a chance. all four in defence were terrible and i mean terrible.full backs got torn apart particularly the french kid. the 2 centre backs had no pace. greer really baffled me as last season he was strong and played the ball out of trouble from the back but today you would be forgiven for mistaking him for aljofree, every chance he had he just hoofed it only to go straight to a gills player which invited pressure back on. as for lucas, he doesnt look any better than smith or brez, i didnt think he had a good game. kicking was crap, the firsr goal he was out of position but probably wouldnt have saved shot anyway so maybe being a bit to picky on that. 2nd goal killed us which i think he could have saved. that 'great' save the gills fan referred to was smacked straight at him, he would have had to be sheet to let that in and i think gills fans clapped the shot and not the save. i dont think gills were good today, they only had to turn up to win and they did. once we went 1 behind, it was effectively game over. we were never going to score from open play. the only weapon we had was morrison long throw. we did have a few good chances in the first half but none on target and all created from corners, which was a positive as over the past few seasons we haven't been that good at scoring from corners from what i remember. 2nd half was awful though. some fans make me laugh at times seemingly knowing everything but not having gone to watch the game, i understand not everyone can go for one reason or another (i will be missing mk dons tuesday and not by choice or cos of today). so much hype from the adver, manager, chairman and players (greer!) and yet we are no better than last season. we do need to spend money on the team, i understand fitton saved the club but we cant keep holding on to that forever. the owners seem to have money from what we are told. we could buy a good squad or improve it with a million quid or so. it would take that much look at 2003-04 playoff season, all free signings. is fitton and co waiting for the stadium and hotel etc to be built before investing big in the team, are fitton and co here to make profit by turning club into a higher league club with assets like reading and a youth set up like crewe,produce then sell like a production line then sell the club 5-10 yrs later or are they here because football is a hobby, a passion even if they are not swindon born and bred or previous fans of the club.its always baffled me why business men would want to invest in football without their own motives or greed unless it was a hobby or they were fans who done good ie became wealthy.fitton says the club needs to be run more effeciently but for who's benefit? ticket prices have gone up to £22 in main stands, who are we going to attract to watch swindon at that price? a little gamble is not a bad thing, the bigger the gamble the bigger the reward.without a gamble we will just be sat in L1 for the next decade.for me i say gamble abit, fitton cant fund the club with 7,000 attendances on its own when there are much bigger clubs in L1 and championship. just to end this long rant, i hope its just a one off and they get this out their system soon. did anybody see that fan (after 4th goal) run on the pitch and get in (i think greer or morrison?) a swindon players face and the player look to smack or push the fan in the face (bit like the encklemen situation against birmingham vs villa a few years ago).

Peter Shirtlif must be questioned about this shambolic display. Its all to easy to pin the blame on the manager and the goalkeeper, well I think the goalie has comeout of it with credit.
Peter is our defence coach - well to me there are some serious doubts here.

Still seething after yesterdays debacle. What an inept, incompetent, embarrassing performance that was! DW has to take a big chunk of the blame, he selected the team, the strange formation and the tactics yesterday.

Yesterday was a wake-up call for "happy clappy" brigade who think Wilson can do no wrong. Those (me included) that have excused his total failure to sign any strikers before the start of the season, by saying "he's after quality not quantity". What a joke! From what I saw yesterday the only "quality" signing Wilson's made is Douglas. Time to take off those rose tinted specs everyone and see Wilson's failure to strengthen the team by signing at least 2 strikers + midfielder + LB for what it is... a FAILURE!

Players were played out of position and none of the team seemed to have a clue what they were meant to be doing.

Why play the shortest player upfront then whack 10ft high balls to the front 2?

Timlin was absolutely gash yesterday in fact the worst of the whole bunch.

We lacked pace at the back and it showed when Gillingham pumped balls forward Morrison was caught out time and time again.

Lescinel had a mare too and was easily at fault for the 1st goal.

We looked dangerous 1st half with O'Brien but once we lost his threat then it was always gonna be Gillingham's game.

Things i can't understand why play McNamee upfront, why not McGovern who seemed to be played just behind Paynter in pre-season tour of Austria.

We should never have played 4-4-2 yesterday we didn't have the players to do so.

People are blaming Cuthbert for all the goals conceded yet he was only on the pitch for Gillingham first goal scored. Onced he went off we conceded another four. Not saying he was any differen to the others but the whole team need to take responsibility for that debacle yesterday including the management.

I'm hoping it's a blip yesterday and that Danny can pick the team up because there are 45 games left to fight for and we will need to win everywhere challenge & scrap for every ball this season.

After watching yesterdays performance my doubts over summer signings are even greater. The second half performance was worse than I have seen under any recent manager. The defence is slow, with a complete lack of full backs of any quality why was Jack Smith released when apart from Cox he was our most consistent performer last season. Unorganised rabble. Having said we were not desperate to sign players for certain positions where do we find ourselves now? when we were almost certainly sign players now from wherever we can. I know this sounds like a knee jerk reaction to one game but anyone who witnessed yesterdays performance must have left the game with nothing to be excited about watching in the future.

That will teach Norwich to sign players we were after.

I am a DW supporter but am concerned over how chooses his teams.

We need to give them time in the current financial climate they are not going to be throwing any of their own money at this project so buying big name players etc aint gonna happen, hopefully DW can wheel and deal over the next 2 weeks and maybe lower the expectation level of the type of player they are hoping to attract to STFC becuase it certainly is not working at the moment. The 2 home games are critical now if we get thumped by MK and Saints then I fear that the BBC league programme could be right when they say "Danny Wislon is in for a long hard season with Swindon", all we can do is keep turning up and getting behind the lads now is not the time to turn on them so early in th season.

Morrison and Greer were a shadow of their best, Cuthbert and Lescinel were atrocious (although Cuthbert clearly wasn't match-fit). Lucas wasn't to blame, not his fault that the defence in front of him totally collapsed. Timlin once again was invisible, Douglas done as much as he could do when he received the ball, O'Brien had a good spell in the first half but he never showed that form after the injury. Amankwaah just isn't a right-mid, poor decision by DW to play him there. McNamee was the only player who looked like making things happen, and Paynter done as much as he could with the awful service he was being provided with.

Very disappointed because I paid good money to watch these so-called footballers put in performances that clearly were no-where near their best, and the lack of commitment made me sick. DW got a lot of decisions with the team selection wrong today and his post-match interview was quite frankly pathetic, I'm a big fan of his but it was like he didn't realise he got the team selection and formation completely wrong. Gotta accept responsibility DW.

Very good post, u have Sumed it up very nicely. The bit about lack of desire sounds about right, which is strange considering the performances during pre season.

Although dw hands were tied to a certain degree yesterday, he still got the formation wrong in my eyes.

The signings we made were good ones, although u would not think so after yesterday, but all of which on a shoestring. If the club wants to move forward and push for promotion then money has to be spent

they have the marketing side if things spot on, with the capture of EA and Addidas alike, but this alone doesn't bring in gate recipts, only good performances witch in turns brings wins and then we find 8000+ at the CG

bring on Saturday and hopefully the arrival of 2-3 players then we can start the season proper again

with regards to people calling for dw and fittons head then that's just ludicous. And hoping we will loose just to prove something, well again these are no stfc fans

the only critism so far is the time it's taken for strikers

Spot on. Agree with everything. I think the pressure will be really on DW if we don't get a result on Tuesday becasuse AF has made no secret of his desire for good cup runs. However, I think we can turn it around. As you say the players don't become that bad over night. Lets hope we got our bad day at the office out of our system early on. And for those who accuse me of wearing rose tinted specs I'm not apologising for supporting my (and your) team no matter what. Maybe you should try it some time.

We have to want more than just consiladation, what's the point in all this hype if we just want to plod along and not get anywhere.

I do agree though as I've said before, with the squad that we have currently then maybe the club does just want consiladation in this league, otherwise they would have invested in players.

Perhaps they want us to belivev all this hype that they want to push for promotion, when deep down they don't want it themselves

Amankwaah just isn't a right-mid, poor decision by DW to play him there. McNamee was the only player who looked like making things happen, and Paynter done as much as he could with the awful service he was being provided with. Very disappointed because I paid good money to watch these so-called footballers put in performances that clearly were no-where near their best, and the lack of commitment made me sick. DW got a lot of decisions with the team selection wrong today and his post-match interview was quite frankly pathetic, I'm a big fan of his but it was like he didn't realise he got the team selection and formation completely wrong. Gotta accept responsibility DW. What annoys me most is that the players gave some of the fans exactly what they wanted. I've seen lunnyboy's posts on another forum and I can't believe what that mug was saying, he clearly wanted us to lose so that he could prove a point, and there are a few others on here who were doing the same. These so-called fans are an embarrassment to this club. Back to the result and I'm pretty sure it was just a freak result. The likes of Greer don't become crap overnight. The players, management and the board will see this as a huge kick up the arse and hopefully the players will repay us with good performances on Tuesday and Saturday against MK Dons, and hopefully we'll see some players coming in this week. Yesterday was the best time to have a result like that, and hopefully it will all be forgotten in the next few weeks. COYR.

This season has got to be all about consolidation and rebuilding...anyone who believes we should be challanging for promotion shoul get a bit more realistic....we will have to rebuild confidence in the club not only for the supporters but prospective signings...we may have lost out on the targets because of STFC recent history.....I have faith that in time DW will get in right.....but our expectations must be realistic.

Sorry laurie I dissagree. If you werein southamtons position with -10 theni would agree with u. We have to want more than just consiladation, what's the point in all this hype if we just want to plod along and not get anywhere. I do agree though as I've said before, with the squad that we have currently then maybe the club does just want consiladation in this league, otherwise they would have invested in players. Perhaps they want us to belivev all this hype that they want to push for promotion, when deep down they don't want it themselves

Consolidation is not about 'plodding along and not getting anywhere' success does not just have to be judged by winning the league, remember we just avoided relegation..success shoud be judged on the progress we have made both on and off the field...after all the problems in recent seasons as we are now debt free would it not be foolish to throw the money around to attempt to gain promotion...i would rather DW built a team on hungry young players capable of gaining promotion and then playing at a higher level without the need to spend big again.

Consolidation or reaching the playoff will not be a issue. as i have said lots off times be4 we have what i see in store for STFC is at least another 2-3 more season fighting just 2 stay up.I HOPE IM WRONG
we let 14 players go and we got 900k for coxy.and all we have done so far this season is2 bring in 5 new players and 2 of them are gk.and spending very little......

We should try and get Tozer and Jutkiewicz back on loan, neither of them look like breaking in to their teams this year, they know the club and they play in positions we need

I contend that the writing was on the wall last season and it has not changed. We are led to believe that DW made attempts over the summer to bring in players of his choice. How often did he fail when players chose to go elsewhere? Why did they do that? Could be they wanted Championship football but I wonder how many decision were made on salaries offered?

The previous season MM was made to look a poorer manager for the same reasons. How many players, with the exception Cox cost a substantial fee?

This year, how many new players are free transfers? How many cost a transfer fee?

The truth is beyond doubt: the chairman refuses to provide the capital to bring in better players.

I was concerned when prior to the 2008 season he chose to spend money on ground improvements when his priority should have been to strengthen the playing staff. Ground improvements could have waited and become easier to finance from the growing income raised from higher attendance figures as the team prospered. The priorities were wrong then and they are wrong now. The County Ground was an excellent ground then and tinkering with it could have waited until you had financed a successful team


Yes, there similarities between running a football team and a commercial enterprise. You wouldn't for instance become successful if you hadn't a good product to sell. Well you aren't going to have a successful team at STFC until you make the team into an excellent product.

Neither is a business successful without risking a great deal of capital investment. Why should the football club be any different? Invest some of the millions the consortium is reputed to have committed to saving the Town and build the product every supporter is longing behold!

Please, please please, get your priorities right before it is too late.

well where to start. I will always support this club with all my heart, but how many times can somone be optimistic about a new season, We were led to believe that there was a 3 year plan in place. Championship football within that time,, YEAH RIGHT
I will be forever Grateful for what fitton and co done taking us away from the grasps of administration, but surely some ambition is needed, everything at this club is on the side of caution, dont get me wrong perhaps we needed that to begin with, but lets all be truthfully honest, Danny wilson was installed here at this club to keep us up, which he did very well, but is he really good enough to take us up.?? just an observation b4 everyone starts kicking off. To me there seems to be a real air of caution around this club at the moment. Ambition is needed and yes that means spending a bit of cash on some quality players. Doesn the saying " speculate to accumulate mean anything. this club has the potential to be the force it once was, but some risks will have to be taken. im not saying flirt with administration again but surelly some positive believe is needed.. Peterborough are a prime example, and b4 you all start saying administration for them in 3 years that crap., look at burnley they were only 5 maybe 6 years ago a smaller club than both swindon and peterborough but they are now getting a 60 million pay check, and to me the chairmen at peterborough wants that more than fitton.. Come on fitton we are all thankful for what you done but we want more and exspect more now., well at least i do. STFC till i die

In the relgation zone already, if we are still there in October then I predict it will be curtains for Wilson.
