SIMEON Jackson struck a second half hat-trick as Town slumped to a woeful 5-0 defeat away at Gillingham in their opening game of the new 2009/10 season.
A first half Mark Bentley strike gave the Gills a lead they would never look like surrendering, and Jackson and Adam Miller extended the advantage after the break.
With time running out the hosts weren't finished as Jackson grabbed two in three minutes to complete his treble.
Swindon looked dangerous from set pieces but, that aside, were toothless in attack and need a massive improvement before Tuesday's Carling Cup clash at MK Dons.
Here are the key moments from today's game:
Seven mins: Kevin Amankwaah's determined run down the right flank forces a corner. Anthony McNamee swings the set piece into the danger zone but Lescinel Jean-Francois can only loop his header wide.
12 mins (GOAL 1-0 Bentley): John Nutter's diagonal ball from the left sets Simeon Jackson away down the opposite flank.
He easily beats Jean-Francois, breaks into the box, draws Swindon keeper David Lucas off his line and then squares to Mark Bentley for a simple tap in from eight yards. 14 mins: Nutter's whips in a free-kick from the right but Barry Fuller can only glance his header wide at the far post.
20 mins: Sean Morrison's long throw isn't dealt with by the Gillingham defence and Jonathan Douglas's volley back in is blocked.
The ball rebounds to Alan O'Brien but his snap-shot effort is also stopped by the Gills rearguard.
21 mins: From the resulting corner, Jean-Francois heads goalwards is cleared off the line with Billy Paynter waiting to pounce.
25 mins: O'Brien feeds McNamee just outside the area, and the forward forces his way into the area before driving a low effort across the face of goal which a defender has to get rid of from under his own crossbar.
30 mins: Jackson cuts in from the right and unleashes a low effort which just goes the wrong side of the upright.
35 mins: Another McNamee corner causes problems for the home defence. This time Morrison rises highest, but can only nod wide.
43 mins: Jackson receives the ball around 20 yards out, sets himself up and then unleashes a rising drive but it is straight down the throat of Lucas, who saves easily.
49 mins: Kevin Amankwaah strolls through a couple of challenges and feeds McNamee in a central position. He pulls the trigger but his low effort bounces just wide of Alan Julian's goal.
51 mins (GOAL 2-0 Jackson): Gillingham double their advantage with their first attack of the second half. Nutter is the architect again, as his pass intercepts Town's defence.
Jackson beats Morrison to the ball, strides forward and fires past the helpless Lucas.
72 mins (GOAL 3-0 Miller): It's turning into a nightmare afternoon for Town. After giving away a sloppy free-kick, Nutter flights in the resulting delivery and Adam Miller is afforded a free leap to loop home a header from eight yards.
75 mins: A half-clearance drops to Bentley on the right edge of the area and the Gillingham man fires in a thunderous volley, which Lucas does superbly to turn over one-handed.
80 mins: A rare Swindon chance in the second half. McNamee's free-kick from the right is met by Morrison but his header flies off target.
85 mins (GOAL 4-0 Jackson): A brilliant strike from Jackson puts the icing on the cake for Gilingham. Having received the ball on the edge of the area, the front man nutmegs Morrison before giving Lucas no chance with a powerful finish.
88 mins (GOAL 5-0 Jackson): Town have been taken to the cleaners. Jackson latches on to a loose ball in the box, turns and fires in an effort which bounces past the despairing grasp of Lucas.
GILLINGHAM (4-5-1): Alan Julian; Barry Fuler (captain), Garry Richards, Josh Gowling, John Nutter; Mark Bentley, Adam Miller, Curtis Weston, Jack Payne (Rashid Yussuff 87), Andy Barcham; Simeon Jackson (Mark McCammon 90)
Subs not used: Simon Royce, Chris Palmer, Tom Wynter, Luke Rooney, Jacob Erskine
TOWN (4-4-1-1): David Lucas; Scott Cuthbert (Lloyd Macklin 55), Sean Morrison, Gordon Greer (captain), Lescinel Jean-Francois; Kevin Amankwaah, Jonathan Douglas, Michael Timlin, Alan O'Brien (Mark Marshall 65); Anthony McNamee; Billy Paynter
Subs not used: Phil Smith, Jerel Ifil, Callum Kennedy, Craig Easton, Jon-Paul McGovern

Why is we can play so well against champ teams in pre season, even with them playing good sides, then get this trashed by a team who have just been promoted.
So glad I dint spend money going today. On todays evidence we need

"Couldn't get any worse, completely gob smacked, lost for words. Got to respond. Need to get fans respect back. Pre-season means nothing. Poor decision for first goal. 4 or 5 first half chances, didn't test keeper though.
2nd half we went to pot. Gillingham finished well. Shadow of ourselves, we were pedestrian.
Time to put it right. How we respond big test. We are capable of responding well.
Gifted soft goals. Hometruths spoken in dressing room. Players deserve criticism.
Strength of character in dressing room to get through this. Very confident we can turn it round.
We're hoping we might get someon ein before Tuesday. 2 or 3 strikers needed."

also, everyone gets badly beaten sometimes, gillingham conceded 7 against shrewsbury last season
also, bullyfish, saying that you aere glad that you did not get a season ticket after one performance is a ridiculous statement. also, as you clearly were not at the game, how do you know Lucas is a s*it keeper, i will save my judgement till after the football league show. you, sir, are as much as a shambles as this result. as stfcjames rightly said, one poor result does not make a poor season. interesting to see wether you would be so pleased when we start wining. a true supporter would never make comments like yours so clearly you are not one. a true supporter would support town throug thick and think, so clearly you are not one. can't wait to turn things around over the next few games
one thing, i agree that the striker situation needs to be sorted in the next few days

......there. Right then. Yes this was a disgrace, some of the bigger name players that have played today, either did not live up to expectation, or were very bleeding complacent.
,
I do not however think this will be the story of our season, it is a shocking opener, no one can deny that. But on the upside maybe a 5-0 thrashing is better than losing the first few games 1-0. It will/better be a massive eye opener to some of the new signings, that this league is tougher and a lot better than it is given the respect for.
'
A lot of credit must go to gillingham who actually played the game the way they were set out.
'
i feel for wilson, because today the players have played thier own game, and not what Danny had asked them to do.
'
once again, this will not be the story of our season, and now is the perfect time to bring in a new striker for monday morning.
Also I wouldnt blame lucas too much, I was shocked that the defence played as badly as they did.
'
If anyone was watching it was clear to see that too frequntly the team were not gelling.
'
I believe that swindon can overcome this result, and as unfortunate as it sounds, i close with; Maybe 5-0 is what they needed, a wake up call/reality check.
All day training tomorrow for the squad, I'll be at the training ground, and i'll be very disappointed if the team are not there.

Put this one down to experience, get the defence sorted and vnerves cleared, then lets get on and win a game or two.

re. tranmere, what I am saying when i use that an example is that the first game IS NOT AN INDICATION OF THE WHOLE SEASON
finally, fitton has brought all of our squad on a shoestring. 3 of our 6 signings cost transfer fees and don't forget the wages that we are paying players such as douglas and greer
maybe you should get your head out of your a*se and read people comments correctly, rather than reading them in your own stlye so you can be a persistant moaner, you moron

I'm less worried than I am this time last season as we've a much better manager in DW and the problem is obvious rather than all over the pitch (I hope...). I personally don't think AF has done enough. We should not have let Cox go until we had a replacement - if wba wanted him so badly then there must have been a loan signing deal to have had. Theo on a gentlemans handshake was amateurish as is the striking position we are now in.
I'll be getting behind the team on Tuesday and Saturday as it's the only thing us fans can do.

Seems to me that Swindon fans fall into three broad categories...
1. So grateful to Fitton and new regime for saving the club that it doesn't matter what happens, what peoples' opinions are, just be grateful we still have a club etc.
2. Fully trust Danny Wilson to sort it out, give him time to build his own team.
3. Less than excited by appointment of DW, grateful to but concerend that new regime see this as a 'project' to demonstrate that you run a lowly club properly and balance the books, but completley baffled by losing four out of five strikers and not signing any.
Well I remain firmly in category 3.
I didn't go to Gillingham as it was too early a kick-off and not living in Swindon have not seen the new signings. You cannot expect owners to throw their own money down the drain at a loss-making club (although nice if they did) which is why you look to the management team for their coaching, scouting, motivational skills, and contacts in the game to bring in loan signings etc. The jury is still very much out for me, but hopefully today was a nasty anomaly and a seriously loud wake-up call.
The result was still a disgrace, and one we won't hear the last of for a long time. Thank God the Rivals.net messageboard is down at the moment.

Such as the first goal, Nutter playing an 80 yard pass which happened to find Jackson, who took it first-time impeccably(One of the few things he is usually not good at) and managed to find Bentley unmarked.
Your midfield is ok, O'Brien down the wing looks very good. But you definitely need a striker, Paynter just isn't physical enough, he kept getting outmuscled. On the other hand there were two of your players I was very impressed with, one being the keeper, made some absolutely fantastic saves, one of which got a round of applause from our fans. The other player was McNamee, he looks like a brilliant player, he went past our players time and time again, and at one time he took on four at once and still maanged to come through with the ball!
So look, Swindon fans, I have not come here to boast or pick a fight, I have come here to tell you what happened.

As usual, I have enjoyed reading your amusing comments. I just wanted to point out a quote you made earlier in the week:
"I'm not an idiot and I will also be there tmr cheering them on so don't give me all that"
Obviously from all of your posts across dfferent threads today, you didnt manage to make it, and even made a comment saying why you dont like to go to away games, so not only are your comments over the week idiotic, but they are also irrelevant as you have proven that you just say these things for effect, and simply tell lies.
Anyway, I only recently got back due to being stuck on the M25 for ages...and it was an appauling performance, the worst I have seen since I saw us get hammered 7-1 against Forest a few years back. Other that McNamee and Macklin, the team were shocking - especially Timlin, Morrisson and Cuthbert.
And the honest truth is that even if we had Cox, or had signed any other decent striker, we would still have got hammered today as our midfield and defence were simply shocking. I am in no way saying we dont need another striker, I am desparate for one. But for people to blame the result on the fact we havn't signed a forwards, is ridiculous. If Swindon30 and all the others had actually make the effort to go and watch a few matches before making their stupid comments, then perhaps their opinions might be taken with a bit more than a pinch of salt.
DW needs to have serious words with all the team tonight, butI hope this is just a freak blip in what will be a decent season.

yes fitton and co have kept the club going which I will always be greatfull. But if he or u think the quality of the players we have are good enough then I'm afraid your both deluded.
I would love to see at least 4 more playersbefore the end of the transfer window, 2 of which have to be strikers.
I don't want to get in too a silly little argument over nothing, but please don't insult me as I've done nothing to insult u

I was going to start a really long drawn out rant about only dropping 3 points out of 138, or even about us not having any money (10 million in debt, and AF trying to turn around a 1.75 mil per season deficit, on 7500 av gate receipts etc)... but I don't see the point any more after reading some of the comments on here.
I wonder if you would all be so keen to "splash the cash" if it was your own money you were throwing in, while we were still operating at a yearly loss? Maybe not me thinks.
Bad game, bad result. But that's all it is...

Somehow we did get players in and if I remember rightly we hit the playoffs in Div1.
Trouble is now with this result it has inflamed the situation, if it had been 0-1 0-2 probably the reaction would not have happened, although as regards points it is the same as 0-5

yes the club has been loosing money and was saved by fitton and co. However, the club will only turn these losses into profit when the club stats doing well. This starts with good markteting of which so far they have been second to none. Also improving the squad which genually they havnt done to bad but this improvement on the squad has been done on a shoestring
you have to remember it'snot just fitton in this consortium, all of which are millionares. I'm not saying that they have to go and spend 10 million on the squad but they do certanly have to spend more than they have.
And I'm not just saying this to dissagree with u but if I was worth what fitton and co are worth then yes I think I would have spend 2-3million on players.
It's so important to start well in this league, this helps gets the attendance up, team spirit, atmosphere around the club improves dramticly.

Yet with this so called new defence let Gillinghams goal speak for themselves.
Looking at this we are no better than last season. To date we let 13 players walk, took in 6 new???? for what.
Stripped of our only decent striker, no replacements in sight.
AF and DW look at this result and act on it asap. Otherwise DW your players who you said would make us a tigh compact defence have had a bad day.
Is clear the defence is no better than what we had, we had no striking option, so AF and board dig deep finanece several new players asap

This result is a big reality check for Wilson and Fitton. The notion that we can get by with the squad we've got is totally wrong. We can't! Apart from needing couple of strikers, we also need to strengthen midfield and buy a left back.
Get your cheque book out AF and spend some of the £900K you got from selling Cox. And no more feeble excuses about missing out on targets, it just won't do!

although I hold up my hands for maybe mistaking the players that we bought in for being good signings,Its still early days for them and they are still gelling, I have however said all along we would still need to PURCHASE more players and not just up front, although this is proirty.
I'm not sure if it's fitton reluctent to delve into his deep walet, or wether they don't want to pay over the odds or anything else for that matter.
Reflecting on the day I really hope this is just a complete one off, and I think even dw would agree that taticly it was a mistake today. I don't think 4-4-1-1 works personaly, and although he was probably our best player today, Macca isn't suited by playing where he was today, and his position changed at every sub made, no wonder he was confused. And ok fair enough dw hand was tied to a certain degree today, but how long have we had to get players in.
in my opinion the following players are not good enough
LJF, BP, JPM and maybe even timlin although the jury is still out on him
Francois sounded like he had a mare today and makes too many mistakes
Billy just isn't quick or strong enough
JPM lacks effort in my estimation and can be very lazy
I've been writing this now for a while now and can't see what I've wrote now on my iPhone so if you don't agree then that's cool, but this is what I think.
Lets just hope we can BUY some decent players before next week and put this week well behind us and lets just pretend the seasons starts next weekend

Yesterday was a wake-up call for "happy clappy" brigade who think Wilson can do no wrong. Those (me included) that have excused his total failure to sign any strikers before the start of the season, by saying "he's after quality not quantity". What a joke! From what I saw yesterday the only "quality" signing Wilson's made is Douglas. Time to take off those rose tinted specs everyone and see Wilson's failure to strengthen the team by signing at least 2 strikers + midfielder + LB for what it is... a FAILURE!

After all it could have been worse, ask Delia Smith!
My positivity must make you retch, still that is clearly your problem not mine.
Obviously we see Swindon Town through different coloured glasses, however over the last 35 years following the town home and away my definition of success is not necessarily winning silverware every season. Not being forced out of business, not being relegated and pulling ourselves around after a good spanking is. I'm sure we will, won't we?
If you read this and respond then I for one will be absolutely delighted (there i go again) for it will tell me more than your words will ever do that you have come out of your funk and not locked yourself away in the under stairs cupboard for the duration. Oh my God that's another positive!

Players were played out of position and none of the team seemed to have a clue what they were meant to be doing.
Why play the shortest player upfront then whack 10ft high balls to the front 2?
Timlin was absolutely gash yesterday in fact the worst of the whole bunch.
We lacked pace at the back and it showed when Gillingham pumped balls forward Morrison was caught out time and time again.
Lescinel had a mare too and was easily at fault for the 1st goal.
We looked dangerous 1st half with O'Brien but once we lost his threat then it was always gonna be Gillingham's game.
Things i can't understand why play McNamee upfront, why not McGovern who seemed to be played just behind Paynter in pre-season tour of Austria.
We should never have played 4-4-2 yesterday we didn't have the players to do so.
People are blaming Cuthbert for all the goals conceded yet he was only on the pitch for Gillingham first goal scored. Onced he went off we conceded another four. Not saying he was any differen to the others but the whole team need to take responsibility for that debacle yesterday including the management.
I'm hoping it's a blip yesterday and that Danny can pick the team up because there are 45 games left to fight for and we will need to win everywhere challenge & scrap for every ball this season.

Unfortunately no one would touch this club with a barge pole so it AF and co or no club and an IKEA where the CG stands. We need to give them time in the current financial climate they are not going to be throwing any of their own money at this project so buying big name players etc aint gonna happen, hopefully DW can wheel and deal over the next 2 weeks and maybe lower the expectation level of the type of player they are hoping to attract to STFC becuase it certainly is not working at the moment. The 2 home games are critical now if we get thumped by MK and Saints then I fear that the BBC league programme could be right when they say "Danny Wislon is in for a long hard season with Swindon", all we can do is keep turning up and getting behind the lads now is not the time to turn on them so early in th season.

Very disappointed because I paid good money to watch these so-called footballers put in performances that clearly were no-where near their best, and the lack of commitment made me sick. DW got a lot of decisions with the team selection wrong today and his post-match interview was quite frankly pathetic, I'm a big fan of his but it was like he didn't realise he got the team selection and formation completely wrong. Gotta accept responsibility DW.
What annoys me most is that the players gave some of the fans exactly what they wanted. I've seen lunnyboy's posts on another forum and I can't believe what that mug was saying, he clearly wanted us to lose so that he could prove a point, and there are a few others on here who were doing the same. These so-called fans are an embarrassment to this club.
Back to the result and I'm pretty sure it was just a freak result. The likes of Greer don't become crap overnight. The players, management and the board will see this as a huge kick up the arse and hopefully the players will repay us with good performances on Tuesday and Saturday against MK Dons, and hopefully we'll see some players coming in this week. Yesterday was the best time to have a result like that, and hopefully it will all be forgotten in the next few weeks. COYR.

like i said in my post last night, i think that this team will come good, and just like a good cheese, mature and become a good team. lets get behind the lads and danny and get this season back on track. btw, totally agree with other posters sentiments on wilsions tactical errors, he has to shoulder as much blame as the players today.
Oh, Unityred, I think cox was only on the bench for WBA because he had picked up a ankle injury in pre-season and wasn't fully fit. just out of interest, he is 16-1 4th faviroite to be top scorer in the championship this year.

The signings we made were good ones, although u would not think so after yesterday, but all of which on a shoestring. If the club wants to move forward and push for promotion then money has to be spent
they have the marketing side if things spot on, with the capture of EA and Addidas alike, but this alone doesn't bring in gate recipts, only good performances witch in turns brings wins and then we find 8000+ at the CG
bring on Saturday and hopefully the arrival of 2-3 players then we can start the season proper again
with regards to people calling for dw and fittons head then that's just ludicous. And hoping we will loose just to prove something, well again these are no stfc fans
the only critism so far is the time it's taken for strikers

The previous season MM was made to look a poorer manager for the same reasons. How many players, with the exception Cox cost a substantial fee?
This year, how many new players are free transfers? How many cost a transfer fee?
The truth is beyond doubt: the chairman refuses to provide the capital to bring in better players.
I was concerned when prior to the 2008 season he chose to spend money on ground improvements when his priority should have been to strengthen the playing staff. Ground improvements could have waited and become easier to finance from the growing income raised from higher attendance figures as the team prospered. The priorities were wrong then and they are wrong now. The County Ground was an excellent ground then and tinkering with it could have waited until you had financed a successful team
Yes, there similarities between running a football team and a commercial enterprise. You wouldn't for instance become successful if you hadn't a good product to sell. Well you aren't going to have a successful team at STFC until you make the team into an excellent product.
Neither is a business successful without risking a great deal of capital investment. Why should the football club be any different? Invest some of the millions the consortium is reputed to have committed to saving the Town and build the product every supporter is longing behold!
Please, please please, get your priorities right before it is too late.

I will be forever Grateful for what fitton and co done taking us away from the grasps of administration, but surely some ambition is needed, everything at this club is on the side of caution, dont get me wrong perhaps we needed that to begin with, but lets all be truthfully honest, Danny wilson was installed here at this club to keep us up, which he did very well, but is he really good enough to take us up.?? just an observation b4 everyone starts kicking off. To me there seems to be a real air of caution around this club at the moment. Ambition is needed and yes that means spending a bit of cash on some quality players. Doesn the saying " speculate to accumulate mean anything. this club has the potential to be the force it once was, but some risks will have to be taken. im not saying flirt with administration again but surelly some positive believe is needed.. Peterborough are a prime example, and b4 you all start saying administration for them in 3 years that crap., look at burnley they were only 5 maybe 6 years ago a smaller club than both swindon and peterborough but they are now getting a 60 million pay check, and to me the chairmen at peterborough wants that more than fitton.. Come on fitton we are all thankful for what you done but we want more and exspect more now., well at least i do. STFC till i die
