Swindon Town 0 - Hartlepool 1

Referee Andy Hall justifying his penalty decision Referee Andy Hall justifying his penalty decision

TOWN conceded a controversial last-minute penalty as their five-game unbeaten run came to an end at home to Hartlepool tonight.

With the game just about to enter added on time, referee Andy Hall adjudged Jerel Ifil to have raised his feet in the area, and Ben Clark stepped up to squeeze the ball past Peter Brezovan from the spot.

A dour game highlighted why both sides are struggling at the wrong end of League One, as both goalkeepers were rarely tested.

Swindon looked a shadow of the side which put four past Scunthorpe at the weekend, and their only clear cut chances were an off-target first half Simon Cox header and substitute Lee Peacock's low drive which was well stopped by Pools keeper Arran Lee-Barrett.

Town created the first chance of the night on five minutes. Billy Paynter's pass failed to reach Simon Cox but made its way to Kevin Amankwaah on the right side of the box.

However, the midfielder shanked his left-footed effort and it bobbled harmlessly wide.

Former Town wideman Andy Monkhouse lashed a shot high and wide for Hartlepool on 14 minutes, and almost straight away down the other end Paynter agonisingly failed to get a touch to Amankwaah's drive across the face of goal.

Peter Brezovan was forced into action on 26 minutes, making a smart low stop to deny Daniel Nardiello as the visitors started to pose problems to a Swindon side unable to get into any sort of rhythm.

In the 34th minute Hal Robson-Kanu seized on a slip by Lewis Guy, but chose to try his luck from 30 yards instead of stride forward, and got his chipped effort horribly wrong.

It was going to take a moment of brilliance to break the deadlock and the hosts almost cracked it right on the stroke of half-time.

Michael Timlin's superb delivery to the far post found Cox in acres of space, but the 19-goal front man was unable to add to his tally as he sent a header back across goal and wide of the upright.

Town nearly took a fortuitous lead four minutes afer the restart. Timlin's inswinging free-kick evaded the diving heads of Paynter and Cox and Hartlepool keeper Arran Lee-Barrett grabbed it at the second attempt.

Nardiello curled a free-kick over the wall on 60 minutes and then seconds later the front man picked up the ball 40 yards out, drove towards the Swindon goal and fired a dipping effort just over.

Wilson made a double switch to try and lift his troops, bringing on Anthony McNamee and Lee Peacock for Kevin Amankwaah and Billy Paynter respectively, and it looked to have sparked Town into a bit of life.

Neat interplay between Peacock and Cox was only stopped by a superb tackle from Michael Nelson, while Robson-Kanu also fizzed a low drive just wide.

Peacock was next to go close, but his low effort from 10 yards was well kept out by Lee-Barrett following Cox's pull-back.

With three minutes remaining Hartlepool piled on the pressure and got their reward with seconds remaining in normal time.

Jerel Ifil challenged Pools substitute David Foley just inside the area, and as his foot went cleanly through the chest-high ball, Mr Hall amazed everyone in the County Ground by pointing to the spot.

Ben Clarke took responsibility from 12 yards and his kick, low down to Brezovan's right, squeezed just under the keeper's grasp and into the bottom corner.

diabolical 2nd half, why give away so many free kicks in a dangerous position, hartlepool must have been in double figures on these free kicks, and ifell what a stupid error high foot in the penalty area, a wasted 3 pts gone when we were the better side in the 1st half, i am not a happy chappy

I think we're going down for sure.

You might have thought that we would have known more about them than they would have known about us. But it seems that most of the match was played in our half of the pitch, and the number of free kicks given away in dangerous areas could have resulted in a very adverse result indeed.

Well that game plan by Hartlepool to close us down and work hard made us look quite a poor side with little idea. Hartlepool were not much better than us but they gave us no time on the ball and there closing down was excellent. How did Kanu play the 90 minutes when he was shocking to say the least. We lack a decent centre forward and Paynter and unfit Peacock are not the answer so Danny needs to go into the loan market for a big forward or play Razzak. Coxy starved again and coming too deep Greer was outstanding yet again. This will go to the wire Im sure but why do we play differently against top and bottom teams its like all we had to do was turn up tonight and got a lesson in how to work hard and close teams down Im afraid. I thought Hartlepool just about deserved the win.

Tonight was an awful performance and a worse result. However, to say Wilson wont take us forward is a poor comment. He's not Harry Potter. He cant wave a magic wand a immediately sort out all our problems at the back. That was MM's fault and not Wilsons. Apart from tonight, we have been so much better recently. To say he hasn't, can't or won't change things is a joke. He has only been in charge of a troubled side for a few games. Get a grip and support the team.

Rant over.

sorry, just agitated after a poor result. didn't mean to offend or pick on you personally. I think i am right about wilson though. Hope so anyway. Suppose we will soon be seeing the negative 'fans' calling for DW to go and saying they wot return to CG until he has gone etc.

Just back from the game. I can only conclude that the ref is a fan of Countdown. Jeff Stelling must've put him up to it. Don't get me wrong, I don't have my Swindon specs on, I'm not for a moment trying to say that we played brilliantly and deserved all 3points...but the ref was shocking throughout, a draw would've been a fair result. He may as well have gone and sat with their fans to be honest. I hope he's got a decent stash of horlicks so he can sleep sound tonight.

yes again a w*****r referee disturbing a game. Im not one for video replays in football constantly. But when it affects the complete result of the game or its going to completely turn the game a reply is DEFINATELY needed. This is so costly for Swindon. I have to put this down at arguably the worst result for town of the season. It could not have come at a worse time and to a worse team. VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY PI**ED OFF !!!!! Sh*te ref !!!!!!!!!!!

By the way, Google referee Andy Hall to see a whole series of disasters. Also, you'll notice he was demoted last season from the elite group of refs who officiate in the premiership and football league. Why was he demoted? If he's not good enough for that level, he's not up to it at ours. Get him out of the league.

Went to the game last night, first this year, so apologize straight away to all you regular die hard faithfull :-)
Too many players having a bad day at the office, DW took off three of them but couldn't do anymore, was that a one off for these guys I don't know but what really got me was that we never pressed them in possession but they shut us down straight away every time and when 'the Mac' came on every time he got the ball three or four went to him every time so they must have feared him especially. As the pundits say, keep it simple, press the opposition in possession and pass when you have it. The only times we looked dangerous was when wew played it out from the back. Timlin was always looking for the ball, shame he only has one foot. Coxy chased everything and it nearly paid off twice. Greer looks really solid. Ifil is good at what he does but he ain't ever going to be able to play his way out of the back and hoofs it to them too often, someone needs to get close to him and take the ball away, that said Timlin tried to offer him that choice but he still chose to hoof. Amankwah, occasional flashes of flair, skinning the defenders but too few. Felt a general lack of passion and pace and when the subs came on they couldn't get fully in to the game and lift it, never easy to change the pace.
Oh for the days when the Town really went at sides, Dave Moss, Dave Syrett, Windy Miller, all ripping sides apart and making them panic. If last night was anything to go by I can understand why we have pulled some good away draws out of the hat but at home you have to take charge and dominate and press, with some pace and passion guys otherwise we really are in big trouble.
Thanks for reading.

What a frustrating game.

We looked good in patches in the first half, just lacked a bit of composure in the final third, especially Kanu - Pele up to the edge of the box, Ricky Shakes when he gets there. Quite how JPM isn't challenging his spot I don't know.

Second half was a complete mess. Both teams were very poor, but we gave away stupid free kick after stupid free kick. The ref was poor but we did ourself no favours.

Then we have the "penalty". Either the ref does not know Law 12/13 very well and gave the wrong punishment for dangerous play, or he has cheated and given it for 'kicking or attempting to kick an opponent'. I saw no contact, so I conclude he is wrong whatever.

0-0 would have been a fair result, but we have lost a valuable 3 points to relegation rivals.

having read your other posts Green, i can see you're not just an armchair fan so you clearly have seen enough games to warrant a valid opinion but surely you have been impressed with the way Wilson has got us playing recently?

we were unbeaten for 5 games or so against nothing but top half teams and after 1 bad performance, you then come out and say you werent impressed with his appointment. why not say it after the leicester or scunny game. was it because we played well so you couldnt?

Listened to the match on the radio last night and was disappointed with the way the match ended, but I won't give up hope. I'm confident we won't go down, but I just hope we never have that ref officiating at one of our matches again!

The only thing that bothered me was why didn't we start with Kanu and McNamee. And at half-time I would have taken off Paynter and put razak on and given him a run out, he seems a quick guy who likes to run at opponents. Might have scared the sh1t out of Hartlepool a bit and given us a bit of an edge.

Anyway, time for me to forget about the past - can't change the result and look forward to hopefully 3 points on Saturday :)

I, like Greeny, wasn't overly excited by Wilson's appointment and I too haven't been overly impressed with the form of the team since DW took the reigns.

HOWEVER I do not believe it would be wise to stop giving the man our 100% support. The truth is Malpas was not the anti-Christ that some believed, he struggled to get the best out of this group of players and DW has got a heck of a job on his hands trying to achieve the exact same thing.

Take a look at MM's last 8 games in charge DB's last 8 games in charge and DW's 8 games in charge (league matches) and you'll see very similar results.
