Swindon Town 1 - MK Dons 1

Billy Paynter congratulated on scoring Town's goal. Billy Paynter congratulated on scoring Town's goal.

TOWN were left to rue a host of spurned chances as they had to settle for a 1-1 draw against ten man MK Dons at the County Ground this afternoon.

Billy Paynter's header from an Anthony McNamee cross edged Swindon in front, but Aaron Wilbraham levelled from close range for the high-flying visitors before half-time.

Simon Cox, Hal Robson-Kanu and Paynter all missed good chances to get Town back in front, but suffered a couple of scares of their own at the other end.

The Dons had captain Dean Lewington sent off with four minutes remaining as their promotion push stuttered.

Here are the key moments from today's game:

Three mins: Sean Morrison's long throw into the heart of the penalty area causes problems for Dons keeper Willy Gueret, who is forced to punch out for a corner.

15 mins: Aaron Wilbraham gets down the right and puts a dangerous cross into the area which has Town keeper Peter Brezovan stretching. The custodian only manages to divert it into the path of Jemal Johnson, but his shot is skewed well wide of the target.

18 mins (GOAL 1-0 Paynter): Anthony McNamee picks the ball up on the left flank and is given enough time to look up and pick out Billy Paynter arriving at the far post.

The big front man attacks it with his head and sends a superb effort into the opposite corner past the stranded Gueret.

21 mins: MK Dons almost provide an instant reply. Alan Navarro's free-kick is laid off by Sam Baldock into the path of Leven and his first time shot flies inches wide of the upright with Brezovan at full stretch.

24 mins: Town should have doubled their lead, but Hal Robson-Kanu misses from a yard out. A well-worked throw-in sees Simon Cox wriggle away from the attentions of Jude Stirling inside the area.

His low cross from the by-line goes into the path of the unmarked Robson-Kanu, and all the wideman needs to do is get a touch, but he somehow completely misses his kick and MK Dons escape.

27 mins (GOAL 1-1 Wilbraham): Town concede for the second successive game from a long throw. This time, Stirling's delivery isn't dealt with by Brezovan, and when Johnson drills the ball back in to the danger zone, Wilbraham is on hand to divert it home.

31 mins: Sean Morrison connects with Robson-Kanu's corner, but his thumping header is cleared off the line by former Swindon skipper Sean O'Hanlon for a corner.

35 mins: Another chance goes begging for Town. Kevin Amankwaah's long ball down the right catches the Dons on the break and Robson-Kanu races away from Stirling. He crosses to Cox, unmarked five yards out, but the front man's effort smashes against the cross bar before being scrambled away to safety.

45 mins: Kevin Amankwaah tries his luck from 30 yards and his low effort forces Gueret into a scrambled stop at his near post. The ball pops loose and Cox pounces on it, but his effort is diverted behind for a corner.

53 mins: Michael Timlin feeds Paynter inside the area and, from an angle, the striker's left-footed effort rattles the near post.

Cox follows up and sees his first shot blocked before his second is scrambled away to safety.

62 mins: Baldock flashes a left-footed volley across the face of goal which narrowly misses the far post.

66 mins: Once more, Swindon spurn a glorious opportunity. This time Paynter turns provider, picking the ball up on the right before delivering an inch-perfect cross to the back post.

Robson-Kanu doesn't get the best connection on his header and Gueret tips it away, before the same player stabs the rebound against the post from a tight angle.

74 mins: McNamee switches flanks and wriggles away from the attentions of Dean Lewington just inside the area.

The little wide man takes a step forward and curls an effort towards goal but it bobbles wide at the far post and is begging for a touch to put it in.

81 mins: Paynter holds off a couple of challenges and combines with Cox to set up Robson-Kanu on the left.

The Reading-loanee takes it in his stride before unleashing a shot, but his effort is deflected away for a corner.

85 mins: Town survive a massive let-off. Brezovan comes a long way to claim a long-throw, but gets it horribly wrong and fumbles the ball to the feet of Luke Chadwick.

The former Manchester United man stabs it goalwards but it strikes the post and goes out for a goal kick.

86 mins (SENDING OFF - Lewington): MK Dons captain Dean Lewington receives a red card after bringing down substitute Mark Marshall. He had already been booked for dissent earlier in the game and now gets a second yellow card for his troubles.

90 mins: With the last kick of the game Stirling launches a long throw into the heart of the penalty area. Wilbraham's near-post flick-on almost sneaks in until Brezovan manages to keep it out.

TOWN (4-4-2): Peter Brezovan; Kevin Amankwaah, Sean Morrison (Jerel Ifil 82), Gordon Greer (c), Jamie Vincent; Hal Robson-Kanu, Michael Timlin, Lilian Nalis, Anthony McNamee (Mark Marshall 75); Billy Paynter, Simon Cox.

Subs not used: Phil Smith, Blair Sturrock, Hamdi Razak.

MK DONS (4-5-1): Willy Gueret; Shaun Cummings, Sean O'Hanlon, Jude Stirling, Dean Lewington; Sam Baldock, Luke Chadwick (Carl Regan 88), Alan Navarro, Peter Leven, Jemal Johnson (Daniel Powell 58); Aaron Wilbraham.

Subs not used: Nathan Abbey, Ali Gerba, Flavien Belson.

Coxy neds to get his head round scoring goals in this league and forget all the hype about people telling him he's championship/premier
ship quality. I wont knock his work rate today or any other game. But we wouldn't be bottom 4 if he started putting the easy ones away

Too little to late, good preformance but the truth is we are going down. Leeds & Colchester away, could be tailed of by the next home game.If Fitton cannot put his hand in his pocket to get some players in, then I hope he leaves us at the end of the season. 5 year plan, what a load of c**p.I hear he did'nt even finance the Green loan extension, what hope of buying him.

Why don't you put you hand in your pocket! You probably didn't even buy a season ticket when the offer was on. It is people like you that think everybody else in the world should do everything for you. We culdn't even muster 6000 people to buy a season ticket. If we had reached that figure then I am sure the board would have seen and had the desire to put more of THEIR money into the club. We have got what we deserve because the people of Swindon and the many 'supporters' we have, especially those that love to come on here and moan, don't put their money where their mouths are. Normally up ther backsides. Rant over for present.

Playing dismal football week in week out does not attract crowds, other than the diehard supporters who will watch anything. Most people when they pay for a ticket want to be entertained. You cant blame people for voting with their feet.

Town were very unlucky today not to come away with the win they deserved. Much better than Tuesday and I thought they were excellent at times and certainly better than third placed Dons. There seems to be an issue with Coxy at the moment as that's about 5 or 6 sitters he has missed lately which could prove costly to our stay in this division. We desperately need the central midfielder and striker Danny is seeking otherwise I firmly believe we will accompany Cheltenham to div 2. Today was very good but our inability in front of goal will cost us dear in the long run with all these missed chances. Paynter was outstanding today and Morrison was excellent but Coxy what can I say this guy is having a torid time in front of goal. Come on Fitton hold on to our status and help Danny out please.

Heads-up everyone, at least we got a point, most people would have settled for that before the game started. With a bit of luck we could have got all 3 points. Just a shame we're now in the dreaded drop-zone. Still, if Danny manages to bring in a couple of decent loan signings, which is what he's aiming to do, it could make all the difference. Instead of making do with 1 point we might actually start collecting all 3!

I am sometimes embarassed to be a Swindon fan as all we do is moan about players and performances. The way we are playing has improved under Wilson, granted we are not getting the points we need for survival, but we are playing better and the results will come. Hopefully the results will come in time to save us from the drop. Stop the moaning we are getting better, and its time to get behind the manager and players to get us past the post in staying up!!!!!!!!

Hate to have to say it but ,we would be better off being relegated ,then there would be a decent clearout ,we would score goals and if 10,000 people bought seasontickets we could afford decent players .lets give danny wilson an even playing field let him take us back up through the leagues, the fans have to play our part too as it seems the board is reticent to finance the loan players as far as i can under stand . we cant expect fitton to bankroll the club like abramovich ,fittons been hit by the credit crunch and was never that rich in the first place.

I total agree Phil. There are a bunch of F Wits that post on here. I think they enjoy giving us the reputation of being the most deluded fan base outside the Prem.

Yesterday we played really well againts a team in the hunt for an automatic place. For those (morons) slating Cox if you understood the game you'd have realised he'd obviously been told to play deep supporting midfield. We played more of the game 4-5-1 than 4-4-2. The biggest issue we have is centre midfield, Nalis put in a good performance holding role yesterday but Timlin was very average. I thought Big Kev had a stormer and paynter had a good game considering he was a lone striker for most it.

We've taken 17 points off the top 8 teams and 5 from the bottom 7 therein lies the issue...

Live in Swindon, supported them for 35 years, Been there through good and bad times. One of the first games I was taken to see was Fulham '76 I think, (With Best, Moore etc) on a tuesday night. We won 5-0 with 26,000 there. I have seen many silver linings and this is not looking like one. Relegation is not a step forward for this club. Fitton anounced a 5 year plan to see us settled in the championship. That should be the minimum objective.4th division is where we will be unless Fitton gets his act together Where exactly has he been for the last couple of months? Blind faith in Fitton will be a bad move!

OK, so we have two difficult away games coming up but look at the remaining fixtures, Southend at home followed by teams all around us, Hereford, Northampton, Yeovil, Crewe, Brighton and Leyton Orient. These are the games that MM messed up with when we played them earlier in the season. DW has to make sure we take at least 12 points from those 6 games

Good performance by Town on Saturday, created quite a lot of chances, but we're failing to punish teams. We've got to turn these good performances into winning performances. We don't seem to struggle against the teams in the top 5 or 6, but do struggle with the teams in the bottom 5 or 6, why!!!?
