Colchester 3 - Swindon Town 2

New signing Owain Tudur Jones New signing Owain Tudur Jones

TOWN slipped further into the League One relegation mire with a 3-2 reversal away at Colchester.

The home side twice took the lead in the first half through striker Clive Platt, but Swindon pegged them back on each occassion - firstly through a Simon Cox penalty, and also with Hal Robson-Kanu's low shot.

But David Perkins settled the match on 72 minutes when he capitalised on a slip by debutant Owain Tudur Jones.

Town made a nightmare start and found themselves behind within 60 seconds of the kick-off.

Clive Platt laid the ball off to Simon Hackney wide on the left, and when the cross was delivered in the big front man managed to escape the attentions of Sean Morrison to head past Peter Brezovan.

Colchester could, and probably should, have doubled their lead three minutes later.

Dean Hammond raced away from Jamie Vincent and his drive across the face of goal found Hackney at the far post, but the winger's effort was somehow deflected wide for a corner.

Hackney was causing the Swindon backline all sorts of problems and forced Brezovan into a smart save at his near post before the keeper was also forced to pounce on the ball during a goalmouth scramble.

Michael Timlin spurned a good opportunity for Town on 13 minutes.

After Hal Robson-Kanu had tricked his way past Alan Maybury and delivered a dangerous cross, it was only partially cleared as far as Timlin but, from the edge of the box, the midfielder blazed well over.

Colchester were back on the attack and Chris Coyne sent a header over before, in the 20th minute, Hammond exchanged passes on the edge of the box but failed to even test Brezovan when through on goal.

With half an hour on the clock, Billy Paynter missed an absolute sitter to get Swindon back on level terms.

Anthony McNamee had tricked his way past Maybury and delivered a superb cross right on to the head of the unmarked Paynter six yards out.

However, the front man somehow managed to head wide with Colchester keeper Mark Cousins stuck to his line.

As the half wore on, Town began to impose themselves on the game and got their rewards in the 38th minute from the penalty spot.

Owain Tudur Jones flicked on Sean Morrison's long throw towards Paynter and the front man was tripped inside the box.

Simon Cox stepped up and drilled home his 20th goal of the season right down the middle, with Cousins diving to his left.

Just as it looked as though the teams would go in level at half-time Platt pounced again, taking advantage of a poor punch from Brezovan to head into the empty net after Kem Izzet had chipped back into the box.

After the break both sides huffed and puffed with very little end product, but on 67 minutes Robson-Kanu drew Town level once more with a goal out of nothing.

Timlin's lofted free-kick wasn't dealt with properly by the Colchester defence and the winger seized on the ball on the edge of the box, cut inside and drilled a low shot past the grasp of Cousins.

But as the topsy-turvy game swung one way and then the next, the hosts edged back in front in the 72nd minute.

Substitute Anthony Wordsworth's cross from the left was miskicked by debutant Owain Tudur Jones straight to David Perkins, and he fired an effort into the bottom corner with the aid of a deflection.

Scott Vernon almost curled home a fourth for Colchester with 10 minutes remaining, before Town got the ball in the back of the net at the other end from a corner, only to see it ruled out for offside.

Wilson sent Hamdi Razak into the frame late on to try and sneak an equaliser, but Swindon had to make the long drive back to Wiltshire empty-handed.

COLCHESTER (4-4-2): Mark Cousins; Alan Maybury, Chris Coyne, Pat Baldwin, Marc Tierney; David Perkins, Dean Hammond, Kem Izzet (Scott Vernon 74), Simon Hackney; Clive Platt (Sunday Wasiu 82), Steven Gillespie (Anthony Wordsworth 63).

Subs not used: Dean Gerken, John White.

TOWN (4-4-2): Peter Brezovan; Kevin Amankwaah, Gordon Greer, Sean Morrison, Jamie Vincent; Hal Robson-Kanu (Mark Marshall 77), Michael Timlin, Owain Tudur Jones (Hamdi Razak 90), Anthony McNamee; Simon Cox, Billy Paynter.

Yes disappointing result, but given our leaugue position it was a game we were not expected to win. Same goes for our next game at Leeds. There after, no more excuses, if we can't beat other teams around us then we won't deserve to stay up. A bit worrying Crewe and Orient changed their manager and seem to have found the form that could keep them up. It's going to be Cheltenham, Herford and Brighton + 1 for the drop and we are now 3 points adrift from the teams above us. DW needs to sort the defence out and bring back Iffel and get a striker in with a bit more savez than the present incumberants.

They wont get 6k if it was buy get 1 free let alone expecting people to stump up the same as this season.

more to the point - what has Fitton done to help him shore up the defence? Not spending money that's what help he's given! As JimboLurve astutely pointed out the 5 yr plan is on track - league 2 next yr -then Blue square Prem then god knows what until ourlocal derbies are Highworth, Shrivvy, oh and Hungerford Town what a pedigree they are to compare with STFC - if the state of their kitchens are anything to go by the last time I saw them the menu is Botulism Burgers, Ratatouille using real rat, Mice & Spicy sausages and salmonella omelette. So if AF can't fund a steam clean & disinfectant + h&C running water out there he ain't gonna cough up for decent players at the CG! HONEYMOON OVER AF -SHAPE UP OR SHIP OUT! all you disillusioned town who want to see grit and determination on a football pitch should get yourselves along to HUNTS COPSE tonight and saturday to watch SUPERMARINE. far better than a miserable trip to that dirty northern city... and much cheaper too

Everyone seems to be angry and frustrated as games go by BUT! the reality is as I said many games ago this squad were out of their depth long ago and nothing has really changed. In fact its got worse now after a little reprieve when Danny first came in we picked up a bit. Truth of the matter is whatever happens from now is totally irrispective because we have looked doomed months ago and Danny for whatever reason failed to bring in new players soon enough and what he has bought in was too little too late. This could be down to many a reason it could be budget from Fitton, players not wanting to be plunged in a relegation fight who really knows. What is paramount here is you either stick with the club through thick and thin and support he club or find another.Yes I am angry, P****d off, frustrated, etc etc, but we may have to get relegated to re-group with players that want to wear the Town shirt so Make no bones about it,Danny will clear out most of this rabble who have let the club down big time. Its all to easy to blame DW, Malpas, Fitton and everyone else at the club but some of this could even
be down to Sturrock,Best Holdings but its not really in our interest to look for someone to blame, all this will be history when Town are relegated. The main importance is what happens "AFTER THAT", and I believe you will see a much better Town in the long run without any doubt and it may take relegation to achieve this. When we went up last time we did not have a squad good enough for Division 1 and that's fact but who do you blame????
Come on fans (me included) lets just hope our luck changes and by some miracle we can stay in this division but did we have any real hope? belief is one thing but reality is another.

Blame the gutless players we have. Kick em out and start again.
keep picking up yuor pay lads but dont give value for money to the fans. That would be asking too much

I think we'd be in the same boat as Luton if Mt Fitton had not bailed us out so we can't moan too much at him. I've seen several goals lost recently because Brezovan keeps punching crosses which he should easily catch. Can the coaches at least stop him from doing this or bring in a good loan Goalie which is possibly key to prevent so many bad goals.
We still have to play a lot of the teams down the bottom of the table so its not over yet but we have to start winning very soon

You all have short memories. We'd be in administration and bottom of 4th div like Luton or Bournemouth without the board. I'll take a season or 2 back in div 4 if things are progressing off the pitch. With the talent of youth players we have coming through the future is bright.

I will renew my season ticket if we stay up and price is same. If we go down the price would need to drop a bit.

Why should Leeds be expected to beat us 5-0 , no doubt the same unbelievers thought same of Oldham, Liecester, Millwall , MK D, all have been in higher position than Leeds and they could'nt turn us over easily . Keep the faith the road is a bit rocky but whose isn't at the moment clubs higher than us are probably quaking with debt fears .No doubt AF has other issues trying to keep other business's afloat in these financial crisis times , we will be ok dig deep Saturday then lets start to see reap the rewards .
And Town whatever you decide to do with season tkts make sure the town end is affordable and full , same with the bank give the tickets out to schools if need be , teach the little un's , the future of Swindon Town football etiquette, meanwhile sell them some burgers and programs anything to increase the crowd and earn some revenue .
