TOWN slipped further into the League One relegation mire with a 3-2 reversal away at Colchester.
The home side twice took the lead in the first half through striker Clive Platt, but Swindon pegged them back on each occassion - firstly through a Simon Cox penalty, and also with Hal Robson-Kanu's low shot.
But David Perkins settled the match on 72 minutes when he capitalised on a slip by debutant Owain Tudur Jones.
Town made a nightmare start and found themselves behind within 60 seconds of the kick-off.
Clive Platt laid the ball off to Simon Hackney wide on the left, and when the cross was delivered in the big front man managed to escape the attentions of Sean Morrison to head past Peter Brezovan.
Colchester could, and probably should, have doubled their lead three minutes later.
Dean Hammond raced away from Jamie Vincent and his drive across the face of goal found Hackney at the far post, but the winger's effort was somehow deflected wide for a corner.
Hackney was causing the Swindon backline all sorts of problems and forced Brezovan into a smart save at his near post before the keeper was also forced to pounce on the ball during a goalmouth scramble.
Michael Timlin spurned a good opportunity for Town on 13 minutes.
After Hal Robson-Kanu had tricked his way past Alan Maybury and delivered a dangerous cross, it was only partially cleared as far as Timlin but, from the edge of the box, the midfielder blazed well over.
Colchester were back on the attack and Chris Coyne sent a header over before, in the 20th minute, Hammond exchanged passes on the edge of the box but failed to even test Brezovan when through on goal.
With half an hour on the clock, Billy Paynter missed an absolute sitter to get Swindon back on level terms.
Anthony McNamee had tricked his way past Maybury and delivered a superb cross right on to the head of the unmarked Paynter six yards out.
However, the front man somehow managed to head wide with Colchester keeper Mark Cousins stuck to his line.
As the half wore on, Town began to impose themselves on the game and got their rewards in the 38th minute from the penalty spot.
Owain Tudur Jones flicked on Sean Morrison's long throw towards Paynter and the front man was tripped inside the box.
Simon Cox stepped up and drilled home his 20th goal of the season right down the middle, with Cousins diving to his left.
Just as it looked as though the teams would go in level at half-time Platt pounced again, taking advantage of a poor punch from Brezovan to head into the empty net after Kem Izzet had chipped back into the box.
After the break both sides huffed and puffed with very little end product, but on 67 minutes Robson-Kanu drew Town level once more with a goal out of nothing.
Timlin's lofted free-kick wasn't dealt with properly by the Colchester defence and the winger seized on the ball on the edge of the box, cut inside and drilled a low shot past the grasp of Cousins.
But as the topsy-turvy game swung one way and then the next, the hosts edged back in front in the 72nd minute.
Substitute Anthony Wordsworth's cross from the left was miskicked by debutant Owain Tudur Jones straight to David Perkins, and he fired an effort into the bottom corner with the aid of a deflection.
Scott Vernon almost curled home a fourth for Colchester with 10 minutes remaining, before Town got the ball in the back of the net at the other end from a corner, only to see it ruled out for offside.
Wilson sent Hamdi Razak into the frame late on to try and sneak an equaliser, but Swindon had to make the long drive back to Wiltshire empty-handed.

Dissapointing but we gave it a go. There are worse positions to be in, we can still survive as it stands, so stop complaining. So it doesn't look good at the moment, then lets get behind the team. Also, Danny Wilson is the man to lead this team, but I think we need to ditch Williams and Byrne

68% Posession to Colchester sums up the performance along with another Brez flap , it is all starting to look bleak although all the other teams at the bottom(apart from Orient) dont want to get out of it either

S*d we lose again! That's only 1 win in 9 games. Danny Wilson has had long enough now to sort things out, we can't keep blaming Malpas. I think we're going down!

As JimboLurve astutely pointed out the 5 yr plan is on track - league 2 next yr -then Blue square Prem then god knows what until ourlocal derbies are Highworth, Shrivvy, oh and Hungerford Town what a pedigree they are to compare with STFC - if the state of their kitchens are anything to go by the last time I saw them the menu is Botulism Burgers, Ratatouille using real rat, Mice & Spicy sausages and salmonella omelette. So if AF can't fund a steam clean & disinfectant + h&C running water out there he ain't gonna cough up for decent players at the CG! HONEYMOON OVER AF -SHAPE UP OR SHIP OUT! Why is Mr BetFair not coughing up!
Wow, great comment, and right. What has DW done about the defence? Nothing.
