Swindon Town 0 - Crewe 0

Hal Robson-Kanu in action against Crewe Hal Robson-Kanu in action against Crewe

TOWN took a point from their crunch relegation clash against Crewe, in a game devoid of attacking quality.

The visitors wasted the best chance of the game in the first half when Danny Woodards sidefooted wide when unmarked.

Here are the key moments from today's game.

11 mins: Alan Sheehan cracks a crisp low drive from the left side of the area but Phil Smith gets his body behind it.

15 mins: Sheehan's free kick floats dangerously across goal but no one can get their head on it.

18 mins: Michael Timlin has Town's first attempt but he fires high and wide with his left foot.

19 mins: A nasty collision sees Kevin Amankwaah and Clayton Donaldson trudge off gingerly, but both are okay to carry on.

22 mins: Another shot from range as Gilfi Sigurdsson tries his luck, and Smith is forced to parry wide.

23 mins: Hal Robson-Kanu makes space for himself 20 yards out but drags a yard wide of the right post.

26 mins: Strikes from range are fast becoming the order of the day as Donaldson smashes off-target from 25 yards.

31 mins: Sheehan waltzes past Greer and cuts back for the unmarked Danny Woodards, who inexplicably misses the target from 12 yards.

32 mins: A searching cross from Scott McManus finds Donaldson, who nods just wide of the right upright.

36 mins: Sigurdsson's attempted header rebounds kindly back to him off a defender, but he skews horribly wide from 10 yards.

40 mins: Robson-Kanu connects beautifully just outside the area and his reaction reveals he wasn't far away.

42 mins: The same man crosses for Paynter, but the ball does not quite fall right for the striker and he lifts over from six yards.

48 mins: A free kick from Timlin flies well over the bar.

51 mins: Robson-Kanu booked.

60 mins: Timlin crosses for Cox but the ball does not drop nicely for him and is cleared.

61 mins: Sigurdsson brings a save from Smith from 25 yards.

62 mins: Anthony McNamee's delivery bounces dangerously across the six yard box but no one can connect.

71 mins: A cross-shot from McNamee is tipped to safety by Crewe stopper John Ruddy.

74 mins: Tudur Jones booked.

75 mins: Donaldson shoves over Robson-Kanu and Tudur Jones' sidefooted free kick is saved comfortably by Ruddy.

80 mins: McNamee shoots weakly at the Crewe goalkeeper.

81 mins: Robson-Kanu drills high and wide from the left edge of the penalty area.

86 mins: Vincent booked.

91 mins: Timlin crashes high and wide from distance.

92 mins: Ruddy gathers at the second attempt from substitute Jack Smith.

93 mins: Amankwaah blocks heroically from Ashley Westwood six yards out.

94 mins: Phil Smith makes a terrific reaction save from John Brayford.

TOWN: Phil Smith, Kevin Amankwaah, Jamie Vincent (Jack Smith, 88 mins), Jerel Ifil, Gordon Greer (c), Hal Robson-Kanu (Hamdi Razak, 84 mins), Michael Timlin, Owain Tudur Jones, Anthony McNamee, Billy Paynter, Simon Cox.

In the last 3 home matches, swindon have had an excellent start in the first half but today they did not gel at all. WIth crewe being all over us ( literally) and us not getting any decisions swinging our way it was looking doubtful that we would even get a point...
But DW obviously said something at half time that made them want to play.
In my opinion without Phil smith we would have struggled today.. well done swindon and a much better second half performance.

Surprised no-one has commented yet. First half was absolutely dire and it was painful to watch everytime we had the ball we just hoofed it up field and lost possession!

Timlin man of the match?!! you are having a laugh that was his worst performance all season as his passing was diabolical.

We just didnt look a team today so what has happened to the kind of performance we put in against hereford etc. No fluency in our play whatsoever although i did think the second half we did improve with our attacking intent but it was still poor at best.

I thought Paynter had a good game. Held the ball up well and always looked dangerous. Phil Smith i thought looked very comfortable with crosses and a couple of fine saves especially at the end.

Those two were the only ones who came out with any credit and i think and Coxy had a very poor game but i suppose it was a good thing in a way considering there were plenty of scouts around today.

Rant over and I will always remain upbeat about the next game so...
KEEP THE FAITH AND UP THE REDS!!

Mr Fitton. Your product is not fit for purpose. You and the board are obviously aware. You cannot run a Limited Liability relying on occasional customer satisfaction. Get it right or suffer the consequences of any failing business

on the positive side its another clean sheet and good game by phil smith. on the other hand what does otj contribute to the team/game apart from giving away fouls? we lacked ideas on breaking down a tough crewe side who had a game plan and stuck to it very well. i feel we did well to come away with a point there!

Swindon Convert,
I'm sure mr Fitton and the board really are trying to reach out to the shareholders and give complete customer satisfaction in the football departmental stakes; to whit ensure each consumer endures 90 minutes of the said football product to a satisfactory conclusion. Ergo they try to win. What were you converted from? A boring git? If so ask them to give you the once over you prentious twot. You certainly haven't been fully converted. Go back to accountancy...(apolo
gies to the real rock n roll accountants out there)...

I can't believe the boos Timlin received. He was our ONLY player who was trying to play it on the floor, he did so effectively, until people like OTJ, Ifil etc decided to lump it to the frontmen, who had massive Crewe defenders for company. Timlin had the right idea, shame no one else did. No, he wasn't MOTM, that should have gone to Greer, but he was a hell of a lot better than OJT, who looked like he set out to ruin every passing move we attempted to create.

spot on stid, how was it that timlin was the only one to see that we were playing land of the giants, the whole of the first half was a long ball game which we lost every time except when timlin got the ball, he may have missed a few passes but he had no help and the wingers thought they were midfielders. macca and kanu - heres a tip- wingers play on the wing (that's at the side of the pitch, in case you read this)
security word = will-trip ha!

Out here i have one option can only listen to BBC Swindon, so 1 point/clean sheet.
Rather have that than lose to a team in a similiar position as we are.
çCrew had 10 men behind the ball and was hard for the town to break down.
We hace 5 games remaining where we need i feel 9 points for safety.
They will do it starting at Brighton. So although we needed 3 yesterday we are still in with a shout, Wish then. luck

Jerel Ifil was once again absolutely diabolical. He cannot even pass the ball 10 yards at the moment his distribution is awful, I dont want him clipping picture book 40/50 yard passes i just want the simple things carried out with confidence and authority, he has been a joke all season. hope morrison is fit for next weekend, massive fixtures and ifil is a liability. He looks over weight, slow, he is error ridden with a current turning circle like the QE2.
The good thing is Wilson knows this already but has no defensive options - roll on the summer!

Anyway as for the game, we didnt concede and all season we have scored goals thats proved with a -3 goal difference yet we have leaked like a sive, however yesterday it didn't happen but we did clear our lines thanks to greer.
It was just a completely different performance to what we have seen all season, not the best granted but i will put it to you like this, 10 points from the last 15 available, thats 2pts per game, this will keep us up.

We are all looking forward to the summer clearout its long overdue, keep the faith it will be tight but i think we will just make it.

Hi bagsofsweets
I am sorry you were unable to read grown up language. Incidently I converted to STFC and realloy do care. Incidently, my converion was from my home town Motherwell. The last time I posted anything on this site was when I( implored the old board not to employ MM as I watched him destroy my club

Yes Jerel Ifil did not play well, but there was one supporter in DON ROGERS stand who's voical abuse of Jerel Ifil was totaly disgraceful. I wont go into what I heard on here.At one point during the game I had to tell him to shut up and get a brain. On monday, I will be contacting the club to see what can be done, so this idiot never steps foot in GC again.THESE MORONS WHO FEEL THEY CAN ABUSE PLAYERS TO THAT LEVEL WE DO NOT WANT AT STFC

I couldn't make it yesterday, how did Ifil do?
He seems to be a shadow of his former self since the Malpas fall out. He used to be pretty solid but it may be a justifiable drop by DW now...

completely agree with both your points. I used to look at him as a titus bramble type player - good solid defender, strong with pace, but could make a costly mistake at any moment! Everyone including myself used to talk about his potential, he seems to be getting worse now though, his distribution is now so bad and as you say he's very immobile. Still on place for that type of cause though?

Good to see I am not the only one who thought Timlin had a good game. The abuse he got was shocking. Swindon Fans are a Joke. So miserable and never have anything positive to say.

Anyway I thought we looked quite comfortable defensively. Ifils distribution was terrible. And the 4 attacking players (McNamee, Kanu, Cox, Paynter) were below average. And thats the reason we didnt win the match.

If Cox thinks he going to be able to play at a higher standard, he might want to sort out his touch. Cause its rubbish.

Totally agree dropped points always means the moaners are back on here. No sign of them when we win though. Ifil had a very bad time with Malpas and fans shouting racial abuse which his wife heard a few months back. Very fickle fans at Swindon and they can't wait to try and destroy someone who is going through a bad spell. Short memories is all I can say to you lot and give the guy a break because this guy was outstanding for us before Malpas came here and MM destroyed the poor guy and he could not even get on the bench. Some of the so called Swindon fans who only post negative on here are so perfect in every way and lead such mistake free lives and perform always to the highest level possible??? I don't think so some how. Yes we can critisize and have the right to as paying public but please come on at least engage the brain before writing this constant drivel and moaning. This Town side were way out of their depth this season and last and yet people are expecting miracles all the time from players who are out of their league. Its quite clear we will need to re-group and re-cruit next year whatever division we are in and alot of this is down to Sturrock and Malpas and not Danny Wilson.

Good post, 100% agree with that. I just hope we can stay up this season, if so i am confident Danny will create a decent team next season and if so the 3 year plan would have to start then?
