Swindon Town 2 - Bristol Rovers 1

SIMON Cox's double almost certainly secured Town's League One survival as they beat Bristol Rovers 2-1 at the County Ground this lunchtime.

The prolific front man racked up goals number 29 and 30 for the season with a strike in each half as Swindon picked up three priceless points.

Cox gave Swindon a dream start in the fourth minute, taking advantage of a defensive mix-up to slot into a empty net, for his 29th goal of the season.

But Rovers were back on level terms on 41 minutes as Kevin Amankwaah's clearance rebounded off substitute Darryl Duffy and into the net.

The second half was a largely drab affair, with neither side looking too threatening, but Cox had the last laugh when he fired home with nine minutes remaining.

Here are the key moments from today's game:

Four mins (GOAL 1-0 Cox): Jerel Ifil's long ball is chased through by Billy Paynter. The front man collides with Rovers keeper Steve Phillips and Byron Anthony on the edge of the box and the ball drops to Simon Cox, who sidefoots into the empty net from 20 yards.

10 mins (SUBSTITUTION): Play is still yet to restart following the collision and the goal. Phillips and Anthony have had lengthy treatment, with the keeper recovering. However, it is bad news for the defender who is stretchered off and replaced by Darryl Duffy.

11 mins: Paynter latches on to a through ball, turns Steve Elliott inside out as he enters the box and fires a shot in at the near post, which Phillips does well to parry away.

15 mins (SUBSTITUTION): It's one apiece in terms of replacements. Patrick Kanyuka, making his first start since the end of February, goes down following an innocuous challenge in the middle of the park. He hobbles off to be replaced by Craig Easton.

17 mins: Kevin Amankwaah bursts down the right and his deep cross to the far post is headed back into the danger zone by Easton. Simon Cox connects, unmarked, but scuffs his close-range volley into the hands of Phillips.

21 mins (GOAL 1-1 Duffy): Rovers get back on level terms with a bizarre equaliser. Amankwaah, trying to clear the ball on the edge of the box, fires it into the shins of Duffy and it somehow finds a way past the unsuspecting Phil Smith and into the bottom corner.

26 mins: As Town fail to clear a cross from the right, Chris Line meets the ball 20 yards out and sends an acrobatic volley towards the top corner.

However, Smith is equal to the strike, producing a fantastic full-length stop to tip it around the post.

29 mins: Paynter and Cox link up well as Swindon break forward at pace, but the latter can only drag his shot wide.

44 mins: Amankwaah's cross from the right bobbles through to Paynter just inside the box, and the striker hits a snap-shot strike which Phillips has to gather.

45 mins: Rickie Lambert meets Stuart Campbell's corner with a thumping free header eight yards out, but can only direct his effort over.

55 mins: Cox races onto a ball down the left, shrugs of Aaron Lescott and strides into the penalty area.

However, the angle is tight and as he tries to get his shot away Phillips manages to get down at his feet and turn the ball away for a corner.

57 mins: Hal Robson-Kanu curls a left-footed effort wide of the upright from 25 yards.

60 mins: Kuffour's low cross picks out Lambert and the striker looks sure to score as he connects on the half volley. But, out of nowhere, Ifil throws his body in the way to make a superb last-ditch block.

65 mins (SUBSTITUTION): As Town look to stir things up going forward, Robson Kanu is replaced by Jon-Paul McGovern.

77 mins: Owain Tudur Jones blazes a 25-yard free-kick high and wide as the game looks set to fizzle out.

78 mins: Amankwaah's cross from the right is flicked goalwards by the head of Paynter. The effort doesn't have much power but Phillips scrambles to his far post and just manages to keep it out.

80 mins: Jamie Vincents deep cross is headed wide of the far post by Cox.

81 mins (GOAL 2-1 Cox): Jon-Paul McGovern sets Amankwaah free down the right and his low cross isn't dealt with by the Rovers defence.

It finds its way to Cox, and the front man drills low shot past Phillips to send the County Ground wild and claim his 30th goal of the season.

88 mins: Cox almost claims his hat-trick. Paynter heads into his path and the striker turns and fires in a left-footed shot which Phillips does well to keep out.

TOWN (4-4-2): Phil Smith; Kevin Amankwaah, Jerel Ifil, Gordon Greer (c), Jamie Vincent; Hal Robson-Kanu (Jon-Paul McGovern 65), Patrick Kanyuka (Craig Easton 15), Owain Tudur Jones, Anthony McNamee (Jack Smith 84); Simon Cox, Billy Paynter

I'll be glad to see this 'season horriblius' over and done with.
I'm still having horrible flash backs of MM, the shrink says they will ease off by the start of next season....

Gutsy performance from the boys today and an inspired substitution by DW to bring on JP who did really well.
Stress levels now back to sensible level...!!!
Well done to the town - great win and even better to put one over on Rovers..

We needed a win and got the win. The relief is absolutely amazing! Now we can relax and settle. Danny needs to have a right sort out in the summer. If we do keep Coxy we could actually be a force in League One next season?

I am soooo happy.

Well played today lads even though we looked well dodgy at times.

Inspired sub by DW to bring on Mcgovern for the disinterested looking kanu. JP had a very good effect on the outcome of the match, well done JP.

P'd off we were hemmed in for 30 minutes after the game so the gas head morons could be shepherded back to slave trading territory via our train station.

Why is it we have to wait, to my mind they should be penned in like sheep while everyone else gets to go home as normal, not the other way around.

All in all, happy days and all the more sweet for beating those slave trading ****s

hopefully carlisle will be held by cheltenham today and torquay get a point in their game against burton albion to keep our six fingered enemeies at the wrong end of the A420 out of the football league proper for another year...

With out-of-form Ifil and out-of-position Amankwah in the centre Peterborough should win by a landslide next week. Who cares ? We`re staying UP !

Well done and congratulations to Danny Wilson, to keep a very, very, poor Town side in League One.
But, the hard work begins to-day, and Danny please be ruthless to get rid of most of this apathetic bunch of no-hopers in the close season.
The coaching staff also requires major surgery.

It's crazy that they've struggled this season. The squad was good enough at the outset to push for a promotion place, but the overlong retention of MM put them under totally unnecessary pressure.

Next season will be tougher, but DW seems well equipped to make progress, with or - more likely - without Simon Cox.

a perfect end to an extremely tough and stressful season. now the work begins.

1-keep cox/sign greer
2-rebuild and strengthen spine of the team (centre midfield etc)
3-replace williams and granville
4-cut squad size and spend budget on quality and not quantity

Any thoughts

Also, what a game, well done danny wilson, you have done the town proud and proved the doubters and moaners wrong. I feel that some people should come on here and thank you for a change, rather than their usual bouts of criticism

Brilliant result, well done. Bit stressful in places.
Glad I renewed my season ticket earlier in the week.
Good luck to Simon Cox whatever he decides, it would be great if he was still with us next season.

Could not have put it better myself spot on mate.Totally agree with the Greer bit and believe Town have offered him a contract as well as a Scotish side I hear.Paynter today was magnificent and Coxy pure class and they actually played well together for a change. Kanu had his mind on going back to Reading and was totally disinterested and McNammee had a stinker. Big suprise for me was JPM who certainly caused Rovers big problems and his passing was sublime.I had this guy as one to sell on as he has another year but just maybe the guy does want another contract and looked more like his old self. Ifil never was MOM and had a shocking first half but much better 2nd. Fans were magnificent today and turned up in force to help the lads on. Danny has nursed us to safety and I like many want to hear from the constant moaners on here WHERE ARE YOU!

No further comment required - make no mistake open heart surgery is required at the County Ground during the summer. Cox will go to help pay the POWER bill and it looks like AF & co will have to end up dipping in to their pockets even if its not their war! DW might well be told there is little money for players and he'll have to wheel & deal in the loans and frees area - of which there'll be plenty if you think of the dross to be unloaded from the CG. all this could of course mean we could be back in the mire same time next year - although I have more faith in DW turniing it around than Maurice Mispass and he rightly deserves credit for retaining our DIV 3!! status which is where we are in real old money.

If you ever watch the stiffs (reserves) you will see that we have an abundance of talent about to be unleashed, so don't worry if we don't acquire too many new faces but promote those youngsters already here. JP had an excellent game last monday and showed commitment (see my post on the stiffs)also on the performance of that game I would have played Marshall instead of Macnamee and told him just to play as he did then. he would have caused mayhem in the Gas' defence. Good result for us especially as Cheltenham did us a favour later on

Spot on. I look forward to Danny's surgery over the summer.

He is the first quality manager here since Ardiles (Hoddle was a great player, but the team struggled when he was not playing.)

Only 28 comments so far to celebrate the Town being saved - are the others upset???

Great game, great atmosphere, great result!

However, i was disgusted to see almost all of the town players ignore the guard of honour when returning to the pitch after half time, every last one of the rovers team managed it, shame on the f*****g lot of you! It also took on loan Gordon Greer to convince the rest of the team to stay on the pitch and applaud the crowd, the rest of the shower were half way down the tunnel at the final whistle.

If thats how they behave then i'll be glad to see the back of most of them in the summer!

I hope that filled a gap for moaners everywhere!

C'mon town, already looking forward to 2009/10, YOU REDS!!
