Rooney off to Rotherham but still has a Town future

LUKE Rooney still has a future under Paolo Di Canio at Swindon Town despite agreeing a loan switch to League Two Rotherham yesterday.
The winger commanded a six-figure sum when he was signed from Gillingham less than a year ago, but yesterday agreed a two-month switch to the New York Stadium in a bid to play regular football.
Rooney has not featured under Di Canio since a 45-minute cameo in the 4-1 defeat at Preston, during which he watched the second period with the away fans after being substituted.
Having spent time out at League Two Burton, Rooney returned to the County Ground and again struggled to force his way into the side, with a further loan spell his best bet for first-team action.
Speaking before the move to Rotherham was agreed, Di Canio backed Rooney’s ability, but hinted that he could be best served plying his trade elsewhere on a temporary basis.
“He’s a good, talented player. He finds difficulty in this moment under me because my football is expensive - up and down, up and down - it is difficult for him but he is a very good, talented player,” he said.
“At the moment the difficulty is, with all the three wingers I’ve got and the selection I make for the bench it is crucial for me to cover a few places.
“I have versatile players who can cover left-back and right-back so it’s difficult with injuries.
“In the future I don’t know, but it’s obvious that if he has a chance to play in some place it’s better. If you don’t play football, that can hurt a player especially him. He is a very sensible guy so he needs to play.
“At the moment it is difficult. If everything is okay, if I’ve got three wingers already available to play we will see.
“If there is a chance. Obviously in this moment we have 18 or 19 players, we don’t have a pressure to send him out.
“Now, with the embargo open maybe we can bring in a player who can cover an attacking area as a striker and a winger - a player who is good in both positions - maybe we can think about helping him to play regular football.”

.
Why is Roberts getting slagged off?
.
Can you not be a STFC "fan" unless you put the boot into someone at every point?

from what I can see Roberts isn't much good as a winger, let alone helping in defense. He's no better than Rooney.
Just a real shame he hasn't been given a FAIR chance this year IMO
He should at least be getting a place on the bench..... Think he would be a great impact sub...
Just an example of the wasted money at stfc in the last 18 months.
AND NO I'M NOT having a go at paolo before someone says I'm a moron or similar.... And yes I am going today... 3.0 to the town

But often he was petulant and sulky on the field, trying to take on two or three players and losing it rather than looking to pass, stripping around the pitch when he wasn't passed to, etc. Rooney could be fantastic but needs to become more of a team player and improve his attitude on the pitch.

Can only judge by what we've seen of him on the pitch after all, not sure anyone can see he's not been given a fair chance this season when we don't know what he's been like in training or in the dressing room. There could be perfectly valid reasons why he hasn't featured.

Gary Roberts is no better than Luke Rooney.
Priceless.
Hence why Rooney COULD be a great impact sub..... Paolo after all spent a lot of money on him. If we get a loan player in as mentioned that can play striker, winger etc etc as Paolo wants, there's the same risk that he could fail to live up to Paolo's high expectations and find himself out of the team too... Hence why NOT give Rooney another go?? No reason not too .... Yes there is... He's out on loan.... (:

Only time Rooney really impressed was when he came on for his debut. Been very disappointing since. If he cant get a game in the last few weeks with all the injuries and embargo, I can't see him making much of an impact here in the future. Think PdC is trying to "big" him up so we might get a fee when he's sold on the summer.
