5:46pm
Thanks to everyone for all your comments on another good afternoon for Swindon Town. No midweek game this week, but we will be back for Saturday's home clash with Yeovil.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend.
5:42pm
Simon Ferry got Town off to the perfect start today, and is targetting more goals.
SIMON FERRY
"It was a good win, and we knew it was going to be hard, but we got off to a good start and I caught it sweet.
"I didn't know I could hit the ball like that, and two is the best I have got, and I hope I can build on that.
"We have quality on the wings and they put good balls into the box, and I should be getting on the end of that and scoring more goals."
5:39pm
John Bostock returned from injury, and was pleased to be able to give the travelling fans something to cheer about.
JOHN BOSTOCK
“It was fantastic today to reward the fans with three points, and it was a great result.
“Simon led us really well today and got on the scoresheet, and the armband is bringing out the best of him.
“I am enjoying playing, and if I can get forward a bit and get a run of games hopefully I can score a few goals.
“Central midfield is my favourite position, and I am enjoying playing there and I want to work on my tackling and my heading.
“I did my rehab at Tottenham and came back and finished it here, but I thought I would be back next week, so it was good to play today.
“The fans have been amazing ever since I came here last year, and it is great to win for them today.”
5:37pm
Manager Paolo Di Canio has just spoken about potential transfer targets, and suggested with his tongue firmly in his cheek that he hadn't heard of rumoured target Gary Madine.
PAOLO DI CANIO
"It is difficult now because the damage was done, and the only team which couldn't bring any club is Swindon.
"I have targets, and when they don't have desire they won't sign, and I prefer to keep the money there.
"Now it is difficult to sign quality players, although someone will come, but one we like flew away.
"You are not lucky to get the one you want with the right desire.
"The damage is done, not only by injuries, but not the right fitness and wanted too much money.
"I don't know Gary Madine, and Riley is a young right back.
"I know every player from League Two to Premiership, but I do not know all their facts."

Great result but not a great game Williams and Collins atrocious. Walsall had nothing to offer but still made Wes make two good saves. Devera & Ward solid but not under any great pressure.
Worrying that our strikers are so off rheir game. But we'll. take the three points. Roberts much better today.
5:17pm
Manager Paolo Di Canio has just spoken to the media.
PAOLO DI CANIO
"We dominasted and they didn't have one clear chance and we created five or six. A draw would have been good for oiur situation, and the players came out and won the game, which was a fantastic job," he said.
"Every time you have to start well, and today more than ever, and today we wanted to emphasise their bad moment and we thought if we came to push forward we could damage them.
"We created a chance in a typical way, and Simon struck into the net and it was a good start.
"Every person and every person can improve. Simon is a mature guy but he can still improve.
"He proved he can do this, and maybe six or seven goals in a season.
"He led by example, but today we had almost 11 leaders on the field.
"The back four were the best, and they gave us the chance to stay in the game and made no mistakes. The second goal made the game safe."

DANGER MEN
WILL GRIGG
With Florent Cuvelier injured, Walsall’s main goal threat this afternoon is striker Will Grigg, who has netted four in his last eight games. The 21-year-old’s movement can cause problems, and he will be supported well by Jamie Paterson. In total, the Northern Irishman has scored 11 times in 36 starts since coming through the Saddlers’ youth set-up.
ADAM CHAMBERS
Chambers began his career at nearby West Brom before moving to Sheffield Wednesday where he played with Walsall boss Dean Smith. The two linked up again at Leyton Orient, and Smith ultimately brought him to the Bescot last July. The midfielder is good on the ball, and can roam across the pitch to cause problems.
ANDY BUTLER
The Saddlers skipper was earmarked for the Premier League during his time under Brian Laws at Scunthorpe, but things didn’t quite work out like that. He eventually moved to Huddersfield and once again looked to be moving upwards, but his career stalled and he moved to the Bescot. Despite not living up to his potential, Butler is still a quality defender, and is capable of keeping the opposition strikers in his pocket all afternoon.

One man who has left Swindon Town in the last 24 hours is winger Luke Rooney.
The man signed from Gillingham in January has joined Rotherham on loan. Here Paolo Di Canio explains that Rooney does have a future at the County Ground.
“He’s a good, talented player. He finds difficulty in this moment under me because my football is expensive - up and down, up and down - it is difficult for him but he is a very good, talented player," he said.
LUKE ROONEY
“At the moment the difficult is, with all the three wingers I’ve got and the selection I make for the bench it is crucial for me to cover a few places.
“I have versatile players who can cover left-back and right-back so it’s difficult with injuries.
“In the future I don’t know, but it’s obvious that if he has a chance to play in some place it’s better. If you don’t play football, that can hurt a player especially him. He is a very sensible guy so he needs to play."

BREAKING FASHION NEWS
Paolo Di Canio once against opts to don the green jacket this afternoon. Seems like the brief experiment of the red anorak has been abandoned.

THE MANAGER – DEAN SMITH
DEAN SMITH
Born in West Bromwich, Smith started his career with the Saddlers as they were relegated from Division Three in 1989-90. He made 142 appearances for the club before being sold to Hereford, and was captain as the Bulls slipped out of the Football League. He then moved on to Leyton Orient where he made 309 appearances, scoring 43 goals, and then moved to Sheffield Wednesday under Chris Turner. He suffered relegation yet again at Hillsborough as the Owls slipped into Division Two, before he left at the end of the season to spend one more year as a pro at Port Vale.
SMITH IN HIS PORT VALE DAYS
He soon returned to Orient as Youth Team boss, and then became assistant manager under Martin Ling. He attained his Uefa Pro Licence in 2008 alongside Roy Keane and Brendan Rodgers, but departed Brisbane Road the following year along with Ling. He became Walsall’s head of youth in 2009, and became caretaker manager in 2011 following Chris Hutchings’ sacking. He saved them from relegation in his first season, and has become something of a draw specialist ever since.
Smith signed a new two-and-a-half-year contract in October, keeping him at the club until summer 2015.

A FOOT IN BOTH CAMPS
There are no direct links between the two squads today, although Miles Storey was brought up not far from Walsall, but plenty of players down the years have represented both clubs.
WILLIE PENMAN
Willie Penman was on the bench for the 1969 League Cup win over Arsenal, and replaced John Smith ten minutes before the end of normal time. But he became frustrated with the lack of first-team opportunties, and made just one league appearance the following season, before moving to the Saddlers.
SAM PARKIN
It is perhaps fair to say Sam Parkin failed to reach the heights of his time at Swindon after leaving the County Ground, and Walsall was one club he represented. He made 24 appearances for the West Midlands side, and only found the net three times.
PETER EASTOE
Peter Eastoe was also prolific during his time at the County Ground, scoring 31 times as the Robins challenged for promotion from Division Three in the 1974/75 season. He scored 51-times for Town in total, catching the attention of bigger clubs, and he eventually moved to QPR. After switching to Everton and eventually West Brom, Eastoe joined the Saddlers on loan and scored once in six games.
Other players to play for both clubs include Tommy Mooney, Iffy Onoura, Fitzroy Simpson and Lee Homes.

After the game today he's being chauffeured off to St George's Park in Burton to join up with the England Under 19 set-up.

Paolo Di Canio is very wary of a Walsall side who are having two months to forget.
Since beating Bournemouth back on September 29, the Saddlers have failed to win a match.
But Di Canio doesn't want his players taking victory for granted this afternoon.
“They are a group of young fellas. Sometimes you can pay the price. They have many young guys. But anyway they have a genuine enthusiasm, quality and desire," he said.
PAOLO DI CANIO
"Obviously the next game they will give maybe 200 per cent but if that situation keeps going for the next two weeks, two months that means there is some problem.
“It’s obvious that we have to try to amplify the problem otherwise we are going to cause problems to ourselves.
“The problem is in the way we approach. If we don’t put pressure on the game then we will allow them to have the first chance in maybe weeks and we don’t want to do this.
“I have started persuading my players that it is not acceptable any more to fall in a trap that we go there and underestimate the opponents.
“We can’t. Now we have proved to ourselves that we can’t against any side.
“I hope that the next game will confirm we have improved in terms of professionalism because this is a part of the performance which is crucial."

ADVER CHIEF SPORTS WRITER SAM MORSHEAD: "It's been a crazy few days in Swindon Town Land.
"We've had various verbal volleys, from Sir Williams Patey and Paolo Di Canio, but at the end of a busy week everyone associated with the club is after one thing and one thing only - three points.
"It won't be an easy task against a Walsall side that will undoubtedly still be hurting from their 4-1 home defeat to 10-man Scunthorpe on Tuesday, but Swindon have enough quality - even in their depleted squad - to claim victory here this afternoon."

TEAM NEWS
Still too early for anything official but we're hearing John Bostock could come back into the Swindon squad this afternoon.
Whether or not he's fit enough to start is another matter entirely but his presence would be a huge boost to the Robins - and would add an extra option to manager Paolo Di Canio in the middle of midfield.

Alan McCormack is making big strides in his recovery from a hamstring problem but this game may be too soon for him, while Federico Bessone and Alan Navarro remain sidelined.
Aden Flint serves the second game of a two-match ban.

Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen and welcome to the Adver's live coverage of Swindon's trip to Walsall in League One.
It's a battle between two of the most out-of-form sides - results-wise - in the division at present.
Town have tasted victory just once in their last seven outings, while Walsall haven't won since September,.
Something may well give this afternoon and you can follow the action here throughout the day.
Enjoy.

So he can join up with England early?
So he doesn't get injured?
Or because PDC thinks his mind might not be on the job?
Or have I missed something?

It's Xmas Eve in the STFC workhouse. Midnight strikes as players go about preparing for the big day, the match on Wednesday against Leyton Orient. Bostock is back at Spurs because he wants to attend church on Xmas day. Si Ferry has dressed up like a walnut whip, by tanning intensively and dying his hair white. Aden Flint is still out on the lash, already winner of the 2 yards of ale contest and going for a hat trick. He is still suspended after his fifth sending of of the season. PDC has erected a camp bed at Liddigton in anticipation of the extra training session planned for 4-30 am - just punishment for losing a goal to Tranmere in their 6-1 thrashing of Tranmere on Friday night. Town are top of the league, but its just not enough. the lead is only 3 points as the season is half way over. As the clock strikes midnight, PDC in his sleep is woken by a succession of 3 ghostly images. The first ghost is called Fabio -a stern and grey figure who reminds Paulo of his strict footballing up bringing. The second is called Harry, who reminds Paolo of the value of good human relations. Then just as the clock strikes 4, the ghostly presence of the knight of the black reality visits. Paolo is all of a sudden jolted into a surge of humility and fondness for footballers past and present. He rushes to the phone to call back Caddis. He gives all players a day off. Bostock is forgiven. Flint carries on in Old Town unnoticed. Simon Ferry tweets the players, a miracle has happened. Fodders shrugs his shoulders and dreams of the Palace of teenage cheer leaders. All is well in the workhouse. STFC are gonna win the league and PDC is a legend.

Williams seems effected by the injury lay off and is no where near the level before the injury. Collins works hard but should be scoring more. Madine got 18 goals in Lg 1 last season so should give us a boost up front. Still a win is a win and 3 points is fab and see Wilson's lot lost their first game.
Great result but not a great game Williams and Collins atrocious. Walsall had nothing to offer but still made Wes make two good saves. Devera & Ward solid but not under any great pressure.

I wonder if we could or should loan Collins back to the Shrews if they want him, perhaps that might kick-start his goal scoring.

I'm not so sure about Madine as the Police obviously think they have a case or wouldn't be charging him.
Just because we have funds available I hope there is not a massive urgency to spend, spend, spend. I still think it would be prudent to wait until January, which is when things become more clearer.
We have done well today and I hope our manager gives the team some plaudits and reward for their efforts. The front two continue to mis fire but given what they have come through with injuries etc, now is the time for them to re establish themselves not sit out games on the bench while some short term loan player is shown favour over them. I still think we will gain better form in the New year, but in the last ten we have won five, drawn three and lost two, not time to panic.

Great to see Roberts have a much better game.
Should have been more but we were in control throughout.
So good day all round and should keep the moaners quiet for a few more days I hope.
6th place and in the "mix" so can't argue with that.

With Williams i'm sure that with a bit more composure the goals would start flying in, shame he got injured as he looked to be building confidence then, he has all attributes to be a top player at this level though, sure PDC is working on his finishing in training. For me at minute it's Benno and Williams, with Storey and Collins on bench (when others are fit Rooney would not make bench for me as unlike the other 4 i haven't seen any positives)

Collins is simply not good enough - Roberts laid on a chance for him in the first half on a plate! he was unmarked with all the time in the world and he blazed it over the bar - for me he also wants too much thinking time as to what he wants to do next with the ball when he's got it. He's only scored 4!!! league goals so far and you cannot say Paolo hasn't given him a fair crack of the whip - he had an hour again today to show what he could do. Williams is a shadow of the player he promised to be before injury. We can be happy with our league position at this stage but please don't think it papers over the obvious cracks that are there and which will be revealed when we play the more capable teams. Again like Chish its more of an observation of where we need to improve and you didn't have to be there today to know that our main front two are not cutting it at the moment and if they can't do it against the likes of Walsall then I'm sorry but it is worrying!DarrenSTFCRomain wrote:I don't consider it an attack more of an observation and a suggestion.Chish and Fips wrote:Come on chaps. I wonder if we could or should loan Collins back to the Shrews if they want him, perhaps that might kick-start his goal scoring. Still, we are in the play-off position even with all the problems we have had recently.
PDC bought them to STFC not me..
I only go to home games but like others and yourself. I am wondering why pdc stick with collins...
Anyway all i was trying 2say was WE WON SO WE SHOULD BE HAPPY..

that was handed to him on a plate and he didn't even get it on target and williams missed at least one good chance.
They were ineffective against Blades because DW's lot made it difficult and other top half teams will prove the same, so if they can't cut it against Walsall they can't cut it! Rooney isn't the answer and young Miles as was seen yesterday is raw and still learning his trade. No wonder Paolo wants to get a loan striker in as soon as. Benno would have been a good shout yestrday as there was a lot of scrapping in their box.
Just my opinion I know but from others around me yesterday there were similar views.

Just shows that this 'long-term injury crisis' is nowhere near as bad as some make out. OK we have Navarro and Miller out, but I, like many others, would pick Ferry and Bostock as the two starting midfielders anyway.
McCormack's out, but that's a recent injury.
The main worry would seem to be the striker positions. Probably not the best options that we have up front, but they are Paolo's signings and we have to work with what we have. Williams scored 17 goals with Yeovil in League 1. Collins I'm not so sure about but he does more hold-up work.
What we need is a bit of stability in team selection. There are two places on the pitch where partnerships and developing an understanding are important - thecentre backs, and the strike force pair. Heaven knows how many different starting combinations we have had this season.
This League is wide open. While we've had a lot of disappointing results at home recently, we are still right in the mix. Season starts here.

Yeh, you're about right there I must confess, and my post was a tongue in cheek reply to the one from Don.
Connell can't for what ever reason get in their first eleven but was our top scorer the previous season. he tried hard and always did his best, and without his goals we may have struggled on a few occasions. I don't see anything negative in that, he was a good bloke for us.

Perhaps I also didn't mention that this time last year we were far from brilliant but came good in the New Year and perhaps I also forgot to mention how we struggled then with the original pre season team until a few others like Fodders were brought in. Sorry about that Exmouth, very sorry. I still reckon we will go well in the New Year, but that isn't writing off all the games between now and then, far from it. Sorry if I didn't make it clear, I shall endevour to make it a bit clearer in the future. Can't do week day afternoon games due to my "work" here, but I'll be there in the evening as our daughter will be here with the missus.
The fact that I think we'll improve after Christmas and if Williams does better in the second part of the season seems to tally up. His energy and work rate are a good indicator to his good intentions. I admit to giving him some stick earlier in the season but my hope was his actions would improve to prove me wrong. I'm sure he will given the chance, but as I posted later this last week, benching him in favour of a short term loan player will do nothing for his confidence and self belief. Considering our lack of form, as we know it and judge it, we are not doing so bad, equal 5th and better to come. The future should be bright and very RED.

Jayden,
Sorry if I didn't make it clear, I shall endevour to make it a bit clearer in the future.

My take on the front two as previously stated is Collins won't score 16 goals and definitely not 20 and neither will Williams because they're simply not good enough. Paolo must be thinking simialrly otherwise Madine wouldn't be linked with a loan move would he?
They are both strikers they are supposed to know what to do & how to stick the ball in the onion bag. Not one lower leagues striker these days seems to have a clue as how to go round a keeper, always blasting it and hoping it goes in when more often than not the keeper blocks the shot. Some of their misses to date would have been unforgiveable in a Sunday league game.

I nailed my colours to the Williams / Collins mast some time ago. I still think they'll deliver the goods if they get the right service, which has certainly been lacking at home. You attack PDC for moaning about his players performances and the only time he praises his players you do exactly the opposite. I for one would be patient with Williams and Collins..and they will come good! They both work **** hard for the team and if they create for others until they score then thats fine by me!
Well Paolo!Leon Clarke 10 goals,Williams and Collins no where near 10 in the league between them and it's going to take them a long time to get 10 between them, going on their finishing for us this season!just a thought for you to consider on this Sunday morning!!!!!!!!!!!

Agree that we shouldn't be crying over spilt milk as regards past players, although I have to say Clarke's finishing yesterday was impressive - coolly taken penalty with his right foot and then a confident strike with his left after a run through. He's a good striker at this level, works hard and has the physical presence to go with it.
.
I nailed my colours to the Williams / Collins mast some time ago. I still think they'll deliver the goods if they get the right service, which has certainly been lacking at home. Lumping the ball up to them is a complete waste of time. Malk, nobody seems to have said what sort of game we played yesterday. Did we hoof it, pass it or mix it up a bit?

I really hope we go back to playing football on the deck at home. I've spent a lot of time trying to encourage people to get out to the County Ground and support their own team. The likes of us will be there every week - but we won't give much incentive to the "undecideds" (or those who struggle to get there) by smashing the ball onwards and upwards at every opportunity.
