MATCHDAY LIVE: Walsall v Swindon Town (From Swindon Advertiser)

Walsall signed Sam Mantom on loan from WBA yesterday for the second time...according to some of my Walsall mates he is a good player and will play in midfield for them this afternoon...what's the betting he will play a blinder and help them to the 3 points? Hope I'm wrong.

Failure to take all three points today will see a large section of Town fans wanting, no DEMANDING, to see a return of...........the green hat to complement the coat that was such an iconic item of apparel last season!!

Anyone know where the hat is, or does Paolo not think it's cold enough yet?

I planned to go today and arranged to meet up with several Walsall buddies in the Saddlers club but couldn't make it because of Flu...absolutely gutted! So I will be glued to match updates on here, and as much as I like my Saddlers mates I hope we smash them and come away with the 3 points.

It's Xmas Eve in the STFC workhouse. Midnight strikes as players go about preparing for the big day, the match on Wednesday against Leyton Orient. Bostock is back at Spurs because he wants to attend church on Xmas day. Si Ferry has dressed up like a walnut whip, by tanning intensively and dying his hair white. Aden Flint is still out on the lash, already winner of the 2 yards of ale contest and going for a hat trick. He is still suspended after his fifth sending of of the season. PDC has erected a camp bed at Liddigton in anticipation of the extra training session planned for 4-30 am - just punishment for losing a goal to Tranmere in their 6-1 thrashing of Tranmere on Friday night. Town are top of the league, but its just not enough. the lead is only 3 points as the season is half way over. As the clock strikes midnight, PDC in his sleep is woken by a succession of 3 ghostly images. The first ghost is called Fabio -a stern and grey figure who reminds Paulo of his strict footballing up bringing. The second is called Harry, who reminds Paolo of the value of good human relations. Then just as the clock strikes 4, the ghostly presence of the knight of the black reality visits. Paolo is all of a sudden jolted into a surge of humility and fondness for footballers past and present. He rushes to the phone to call back Caddis. He gives all players a day off. Great result but not a great game Williams and Collins atrocious. Walsall had nothing to offer but still made Wes make two good saves. Devera & Ward solid but not under any great pressure.
Worrying that our strikers are so off rheir game. But we'll. take the three points. Roberts much better today.

Hi Malkym yes very worrying but could be welcoming Gary Madine next week so hopefully this will shake them up a bit. Williams seems effected by the injury lay off and is no where near the level before the injury. Collins works hard but should be scoring more. Madine got 18 goals in Lg 1 last season so should give us a boost up front. Still a win is a win and 3 points is fab and see Wilson's lot lost their first game.

Thought Devera and Ward were great on Tuesday so pleased to hear they kept it up today. Two straight clean sheets - hopefully PDC will stick with this while its working. All in all things are looking much better, just need the strikers to get scoring again.

I cant believe how well we are doing with so many injuries. Weren't we in the same position last year at this time (just one league lower though!).

Fantastic effort from the team and PDC and his back room staff.

Paolo's reaction is he is very proud of his players today who he said were excellent so that's good enough for me 3 points. Does not have to be pretty.

Agreed. Not that I'm superstitious but ... I swear we lose more often when Alan McLoughlin is co-commentating. Does anybody have the stats for this season?

Not a bad place to be in the league especially given the raft of injuries we have endured lately. We have come through a tough period and not really fell behind the leaders.

I'm not so sure about Madine as the Police obviously think they have a case or wouldn't be charging him.

Just because we have funds available I hope there is not a massive urgency to spend, spend, spend. I still think it would be prudent to wait until January, which is when things become more clearer.

We have done well today and I hope our manager gives the team some plaudits and reward for their efforts. The front two continue to mis fire but given what they have come through with injuries etc, now is the time for them to re establish themselves not sit out games on the bench while some short term loan player is shown favour over them. I still think we will gain better form in the New year, but in the last ten we have won five, drawn three and lost two, not time to panic.

Just got back, Swindon fans great totally outsung them who i must say have a poor following, a great start and strike from Simon and although not the greatest of games or performances it was half decent and we were always in control. Wes made some good saves when called into action. Nathan continues to impress had their winger in his pocket and even when he gets things slightly wrong he is so quick to react that he more often than not wins the ball back. Jay Mac played better with his bandage on lol! some poor clearances in first half but he was much better 2nd half both defensively and going forward, as he himself has admitted his final ball could improve but was a threat today. Ward and Devera were great today, yes you can say opposition weren't great but you have to give them credit for not giving them a sniff. Hope any Ward doubters are beginning to realise that whilst he may not be the best passer (some more wayward ones today) he's a blinking good defender, he organises well, reads the game well has good positioning and wins the ball nearly all the time its anywhere near him. I've been one of the ones who has been hoping to see Bostock and Ferry together and they proved that it can work. Bostock has a great touch and always looks to pass it, and he has a very good range of passing, and this is so much better to see than hoofball. He gave a good account of himself, with one blip when he lost the ball in a dangerous position in the second half. Ferry was everywhere again and i must be boring with how i go on about how good i think he is, great goal as well (not often we say that with Si!). Ritchie worked very hard today and did plenty of good stuff but through no fault of his own he didn't often get the ball in areas where he could be a genuine threat, but still scored a cracking finish. Roberts, i have been one of his harshest critics, deservedly so IMO but he was SO much better today, couple of decent efforts some good balls in, some good trickery with the ball and he looked like the dangerous player i thought we were signing, i hope this Roberts turns up more often now. Collins i can't fault the work rate but just not happening for him at minute summed up for me when he got in the way of Ritchie attacking a header that could well have provided a goal. Williams i did not think was atrocious as some have said, he was beginning to show signs of getting back to his best, several times, twisting and turning and running at their defence and causing all sorts of panic. But and it is a big but some awful final balls from him and for his clear cut chance he needed to either shoot early or if he took it on as he did it needed to be lifted over the keeper. Miles did well when he was on and although there were some poor touches from him he also showed how his pace can be utilised to turn their defence and also linked play well quite a few times. Raffa was decent enough when on but cant remember anything significantky good or bad coming from him, same with Louis although he got stuck in well. Great result lets hope we can start sorting the home form out next sat. COYR!!

Great to see Roberts have a much better game.

Should have been more but we were in control throughout.
So good day all round and should keep the moaners quiet for a few more days I hope.
6th place and in the "mix" so can't argue with that.

PS - Great early goal from Ferry but Matty's strike was a peach finding the bottom corners.

As i said FROM DAY 1 OF THE EMBARGO the squad we have should be and are good enough for this division as its not that good is it? esp with the budget we had..
and paolo has done what a lot of people wonted...And that was to get on with his job, with the players that he bought to STFC

Just back from the game. GREAT result and a very good performance. Particularly ferry, bostock and Roberts who all played really well. All the young boys played their part too... Only slight downside were the 2 strikers again... Williams missed a 1 on 1 chance but it was cutting in on the angle so not the easiest chance.
Just a word too on the town fans... Absolutely fantastic turn out & support, there must have been 1000+ of us there.... I'm absolutely buzzing.... My firsr away win of the season.....!! COYR

As you said 29 games left and we are now 6th..and thats after a sticky patch with a lot of injurys BUT now we have players on the way back..

Collins is simply not good enough - Roberts laid on a chance for him in the first half on a plate! he was unmarked with all the time in the world and he blazed it over the bar - for me he also wants too much thinking time as to what he wants to do next with the ball when he's got it. He's only scored 4!!! league goals so far and you cannot say Paolo hasn't given him a fair crack of the whip - he had an hour again today to show what he could do. Williams is a shadow of the player he promised to be before injury.We can be happy with our league position at this stage but please don't think it papers over the obvious cracks that are there and which will be revealed when we play the more capable teams.

have to admit i would be playing Benson with Williams at the minute, i like Collins effort and i have seen enough to not right him off but cant see why Benno isn't getting more game time. With Williams i'm sure that with a bit more composure the goals would start flying in, shame he got injured as he looked to be building confidence then, he has all attributes to be a top player at this level though, sure PDC is working on his finishing in training. For me at minute it's Benno and Williams, with Storey and Collins on bench (when others are fit Rooney would not make bench for me as unlike the other 4 i haven't seen any positives)

This is perfecto,apart from a few more goals.

Paolo has everyone in his sights,we're on a run and with his crab like Cancerian qualities,we will nip everyone on our way to the top.

Caddis was sat in the away end with a movember and a wooley hat. We will see what the future holds for him at STFC

Sounds like another pretty positive away day - and Paolo praised all the players after the game. Maybe he does listen (sometimes!)

hopefully madine still arriving on loan next week, with our strikers poor goal tallies a very tall striker who got 18 last season in league 1 could be a great foil with one of ours.

I wonder if we could or should loan Collins back to the Shrews if they want him, perhaps that might kick-start his goal scoring. Chish & Darren - Yes the result was good but I'm sorry the overall performance was still under par for the standards we know the players can achieve. Collins is simply not good enough - Roberts laid on a chance for him in the first half on a plate! he was unmarked with all the time in the world and he blazed it over the bar - for me he also wants too much thinking time as to what he wants to do next with the ball when he's got it. He's only scored 4!!! league goals so far and you cannot say Paolo hasn't given him a fair crack of the whip - he had an hour again today to show what he could do. Williams is a shadow of the player he promised to be before injury.We can be happy with our league position at this stage but please don't think it papers over the obvious cracks that are there and which will be revealed when we play the more capable teams. Again like Chish its more of an observation of where we need to improve and you didn't have to be there today to know that our main front two are not cutting it at the moment and if they can't do it against the likes of Walsall then I'm sorry but it is worrying!

At the end of the day PDC picks Collins and Williams as his 2 main strikers not me.

have to admit i would be playing Benson with Williams at the minute, i like Collins effort and i have seen enough to not right him off but cant see why Benno isn't getting more game time. With Williams i'm sure that with a bit more composure the goals would start flying in, shame he got injured as he looked to be building confidence then, he has all attributes to be a top player at this level though, sure PDC is working on his finishing in training. For me at minute it's Benno and Williams, with Storey and Collins on bench (when others are fit Rooney would not make bench for me as unlike the other 4 i haven't seen any positives)

Agree with that Mr Stigger and thanks for the great match report earlier. I thought that Ward had a great game at Bury and Bostock/Ferry has to be our best central midfield combination, especially if Simon gets the confidence to start scoring a few.

They say its the sign of a good team that can play badly/indifferently and still grind out wins. I still think this lot will go well after New Year, with a couple of new players in place. Williams and Collins yet to click, but they will given time, the two week break coming up will bode well for this lot.

Sorry Wiz can't see them scoring 20 goals between them let alone each! Collins missed a sitter(again!) yesterday
that was handed to him on a plate and he didn't even get it on target and williams missed at least one good chance.

They were ineffective against Blades because DW's lot made it difficult and other top half teams will prove the same, so if they can't cut it against Walsall they can't cut it! Rooney isn't the answer and young Miles as was seen yesterday is raw and still learning his trade. No wonder Paolo wants to get a loan striker in as soon as. Benno would have been a good shout yestrday as there was a lot of scrapping in their box.

Just my opinion I know but from others around me yesterday there were similar views.

Great result yesterday - isn't that five away wins out of six now?

Just shows that this 'long-term injury crisis' is nowhere near as bad as some make out. OK we have Navarro and Miller out, but I, like many others, would pick Ferry and Bostock as the two starting midfielders anyway.

McCormack's out, but that's a recent injury.

The main worry would seem to be the striker positions. Probably not the best options that we have up front, but they are Paolo's signings and we have to work with what we have. Williams scored 17 goals with Yeovil in League 1. Collins I'm not so sure about but he does more hold-up work.

What we need is a bit of stability in team selection. There are two places on the pitch where partnerships and developing an understanding are important - thecentre backs, and the strike force pair. Heaven knows how many different starting combinations we have had this season.

This League is wide open. While we've had a lot of disappointing results at home recently, we are still right in the mix. Season starts here.

Williams should be looking forward to playing against his old team Yeovil next week. Think Paolo should get him to practice how to go round a goalie, lost count of how many times he's blasted straight at the keeper, hit the woodwork or over the bar. he should be in double figures by now if he could add a bit of quality to his finishing to go with his pace.,

Yeh, you're about right there I must confess, and my post was a tongue in cheek reply to the one from Don.

Connell can't for what ever reason get in their first eleven but was our top scorer the previous season. he tried hard and always did his best, and without his goals we may have struggled on a few occasions. I don't see anything negative in that, he was a good bloke for us.

Wait a minute didn't someone above also say they prefer Ferry and another of his signings Bostock in midfield.

LOL, I like it. I've been saying for a couple of weeks to cut some slack and things would come good, and I stick by that. Don't forget our present Captain is Ferry and with him we have done well, and I did say at the beginning of the season Ferry and Bostock together but got lambasted for reasons various.

I still reckon there are better things ahead for this squad and the upcoming break will serve us well. the best thing to come out of the embargo was the introduction of the youngsters and that has been priceless, so much so one is almost an international, now that can't be all bad can it ?

If we do make it into the Premiership will Grim still moan about the ticket price thou', lol.

They say its the sign of a good team that can play badly/indifferently and still grind out wins. I still think this lot will go well after New Year, with a couple of new players in place. Williams and Collins yet to click, but they will given time, the two week break coming up will bode well for this lot.

I only see that as being complementary, supportive, understanding the present situation and being positive about the future.

Perhaps I also didn't mention that this time last year we were far from brilliant but came good in the New Year and perhaps I also forgot to mention how we struggled then with the original pre season team until a few others like Fodders were brought in. Sorry about that Exmouth, very sorry. I still reckon we will go well in the New Year, but that isn't writing off all the games between now and then, far from it. I'm hoping for another six points this week alone with the home games with Yeovil and Brentford here at CG.

Wiz you ,as the saying goes say write what you want but make it clear if its tounge in cheek.For the record i think williams scored most of his goals last season after xmas .Dont get me wrong i havent been that impressed with them but i have seen enough to know that as indivduals they have plenty to offer but together they havent gelled as yet.Iam going to watch the youth game on tues.

No probs with you Wiz our anyother one just cant see the fixation with past players unless they have a sell on clause.As for williams pdc has stated that it will take 4 to 5 games to find the form he was showing before he got injured.No i am more intrested in the future of st than what players could have done but each to their own.Keep posting wiz we dont always have to agree ,kick off for the youths is 7 if we win we play Liverpool at the cg .Take it easy Wiz ill give you a report and all the facts!!!!! Not having a dig at all, suggest you read my earlier posts. Just saying players we have let go have some form still.

Wiz some times i can see why people have a go at you ,you dont mention the fact connell cant get in their first 11 and so what if he did score against wigan and as for thedon 69 clarke has had more clubs than tiger woods They are history now oh and Bodin had a shot in the poxford game and Rooney got took off at half time yesterday oh and Jake Jarvis set up a goal yesterday and on and on FFS

Connell can't for what ever reason get in their first eleven but was our top scorer the previous season. he tried hard and always did his best, and without his goals we may have struggled on a few occasions. I don't see anything negative in that, he was a good bloke for us. My take on the front two as previously stated is Collins won't score 16 goals and definitely not 20 and neither will Williams because they're simply not good enough. Paolo must be thinking simialrly otherwise Madine wouldn't be linked with a loan move would he?

They are both strikers they are supposed to know what to do & how to stick the ball in the onion bag. Not one lower leagues striker these days seems to have a clue as how to go round a keeper, always blasting it and hoping it goes in when more often than not the keeper blocks the shot. Some of their misses to date would have been unforgiveable in a Sunday league game.

Chish & Darren - Yes the result was good but I'm sorry the overall performance was still under par for the standards we know the players can achieve. Collins is simply not good enough - Roberts laid on a chance for him in the first half on a plate! he was unmarked with all the time in the world and he blazed it over the bar - for me he also wants too much thinking time as to what he wants to do next with the ball when he's got it. He's only scored 4!!! league goals so far and you cannot say Paolo hasn't given him a fair crack of the whip - he had an hour again today to show what he could do. Williams is a shadow of the player he promised to be before injury.We can be happy with our league position at this stage but please don't think it papers over the obvious cracks that are there and which will be revealed when we play the more capable teams. Again like Chish its more of an observation of where we need to improve and you didn't have to be there today to know that our main front two are not cutting it at the moment and if they can't do it against the likes of Walsall then I'm sorry but it is worrying!

At the end of the day PDC picks Collins and Williams as his 2 main strikers not me. PDC bought them to STFC not me.. I only go to home games but like others and yourself. have to admit i would be playing Benson with Williams at the minute, i like Collins effort and i have seen enough to not right him off but cant see why Benno isn't getting more game time. With Williams i'm sure that with a bit more composure the goals would start flying in, shame he got injured as he looked to be building confidence then, he has all attributes to be a top player at this level though, sure PDC is working on his finishing in training. For me at minute it's Benno and Williams, with Storey and Collins on bench (when others are fit Rooney would not make bench for me as unlike the other 4 i haven't seen any positives)

I think Paolo is saving Benno for the run in to the title. He loves him like we all do and knows he can trust him to deliver the goals. While he tinkers in the engine room! In a perfect postion for an assault on top spot now,no rush,6 months to go yet. Yoooouuu Reds!

HI Malkym you are probbly right about the two as i didnt go yesterday i have had a few days to get over their last outing (tue) i came away feeling the same about the 2 of them.Iwill give them to the early part of next year and see how it goes ,the thing that worries me is their is no understanding between the 2 and they just keep moaning at each other.Benson is better in the air but not brave enough in the box Storry is a prospect and i would like these 2 to start.As you say a new foward is needed as pdc has said as well .Iasked the question early on should s.ferry stay as captain what do you think ?

Haha, i am hoping to come along to the Brentford game mate work depending but 80% sure,i am happy that work is keeping you busy mate i am plodding along OK up here but many are still struggling out there,so we should be grateful for being able to keep the wolves from the door.
Next home game i am at, i will introduce you to Darren, a decent bloke not a jumped up know it all but he does know his football.Despite the sh1tty fact he cant spell for sh1t but who gives a flying fig about that.

Agree that we shouldn't be crying over spilt milk as regards past players, although I have to say Clarke's finishing yesterday was impressive - coolly taken penalty with his right foot and then a confident strike with his left after a run through. He's a good striker at this level, works hard and has the physical presence to go with it.

was a bit of a mix, certainly less hoofball than recently, with ferry and Bostock that was always likely, but on flip side did not have Macca's ball playing at back and neither Ward nor Devera strengths lie in passing from back (although both defended very well).

Den to be fair we did keep it on the deck a lot more than against Blades but then we were facing two different types of playing style -Walsall to be fair also ried to play it on the deck and caused us some problems -Wes keeping a blank sheet at least twice. there was still a bit of hit and hoof and can't recall Wes starting a move from the back - other less senile attendees might be able to fill it in a bit more.

I've said my bit on W & C -lets hope they turn out better than bog standard!

I really hope we go back to playing football on the deck at home. I've spent a lot of time trying to encourage people to get out to the County Ground and support their own team. The likes of us will be there every week - but we won't give much incentive to the "undecideds" (or those who struggle to get there) by smashing the ball onwards and upwards at every opportunity.

I have to say that Williams and Collins certainly do put the workrate in and sure the rest will follow soon and bet they both have a better second half to the season. Williams has come back too soon me thinks but I suppose he can only get himself back into things by playing at the end of the day. In the old days we had reserve games for the players to get match fit especially after injuries so do not have that luxury any more.Not sure what has happened to Benson seems to have fallen out of favour but not up to last season's standards so may be Div 1 is much harder for him but he was excellent last season in Div 2. Would not mind nicking that Pope fella from Port Vale looks very much like Jordan Rhodes the ex Udders player who is now at Blackburn. We really do need another Charlie Austin or Coxy but these type of players are like gold dust so may be its time to check out the non leagues again. Fleetwood has been banging a few in at Luton and my old mate Ross Allen keeps banging them in at Guernsey 23 goals so far this season well worth a look.
