SWINDON TOWN: Ferry hitting PDC's target

SIMON Ferry believes he is capable of living up to manager Paolo Di Canio’s goal-scoring target after setting Town on their way to victory at Walsall on Saturday.

The stand-in skipper got his side off to the perfect start at the Bescot with a goal inside the first minute of the 2-0 victory, doubling his tally for the season in the process after scoring the only goal in the victory at Shrewsbury earlier in the season.

Di Canio is keen for the Scot to add goals to his game and set him a target of six or seven by the end of the season, and Ferry is hopeful he can live up to his manager’s expectations.

“It was a good win, and we knew it was going to be hard, but we got off to the perfect start as Gary Roberts put in a good cross and I caught it sweet and roofed it. I didn’t know I could hit the ball like that,” he said.

“I think two is the best I have ever got in the season, and I have got them quite early, and now I want to build on that.

“When you see the quality we have got on the wings with Robbo (Gary Roberts), Raffa (De Vita) and Matty (Ritchie), when I get runs into the box I should be scoring more goals with the delivery they have got, so hopefully I can start doing it.

“I think it (Di Canio’s target) is do-able definitely because I should be scoring more, and I have scored two now early on so I think I can go on and get six or seven.”

Ferry has taken on the armband after injuries to Alan McCormack and Tommy Miller, and while he has enjoyed the extra responsibility, he is expecting to have to hand it back soon.

“I have been hitting the gym since I got it to try and work on my biceps, but I don’t think I will have it for much longer because I think Macca will be back soon,” he said.

“I will be telling him what to do when he comes back I think, and it is a great privilege to be captain, but Macca is good at it and Tommy is good at it too, so I will listen to them and learn.

“Since I have been captain I have tried to do the same thing I have always done, and I have tried to stick to that because it comes across as false I think, so I just try to be me.

“The boys all stuck together, and when Macca and Tommy are not there everyone seems to dig in and are a lot more vocal, which is a good thing really for the whole team.”
